No matter the business or the organization, they all have two things in common; people that work inside the organization and customers to provide a service for. One of the most important things an organization can and must do is have an effective mission statement. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the mission statements of Home Depot, Inc. and Nike, Inc. The first step is to give a brief history of each company and the clients they serve. Next, review each company’s mission statement and evaluate them based on a few criterions. For example, the relevance of the mission statement to the organization’s customers, their needs, is it realistic, is it clear and easily understood, etc. Before the examination of organizational mission statements can begin, a history of Home Depot, then Nike, is required. According to Home Depot’s corporate website, the company was founded in 1978 by Bernie Marcus, Arthur Blank, Ken Langone, and Pat Farrah in Atlanta, Georgia. The companies vision was to create a “one stop shop” for all needs of home owners and builders. They were the first home improvement stores with massive warehouses as stores that provided everything needed to literally build a home from scratch. Over the years, the founders opened more stores nation-wide. Over the next few years, Home Depot expanded into Canada in 1994 and subsequently Mexico, and China (Home Depot, 2016, para. 1-4). Because this assignment is for a class on strategic planning, it is
These impressive statistics suggest a meaningful and powerful vision and mission. The Home Depot vision originated with Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank when they first established their two stores in Atlanta Georgia on June 22, 1979. The original vision was to provide one-stop shopping for the do-it-yourselfer. Today the mission and vision of The Home Depot is expressed through three unique leadership tools, The Values Wheel, The Inverted Pyramid, and the Three-Legged Stool.
If I were to analyze the company's mission statement according to the elements of a mission statement enumerated by David and David, it would be as follows:
In 1979, they opened three Home Depot outlets in the Atlanta area, adding fourth outlet in 1980. The next year Home Depot when public, opened four stores in South Florida, and posted sales of $50 million. After opening two more stores and making sales of $100 million in 1982, the company was named Retailer of the Year in the home building supply industry. The chain entered Louisiana and Arizona next.
34). The organization’s mission statement should “work through metaphors that help employees make appropriate decisions when faced with day-to-day situations, which sometimes can be novel or stressful” (Rothaermel, 2013, p. 34). More specifically, customer-oriented businesses should have a customer-oriented mission statement, while product-oriented businesses should have a product-oriented mission statement (Rothaermel, 2013). Product-oriented businesses should be wary, however, as customer-oriented mission statements allow for greater strategic flexibility (Rothaermel, 2013).
Home Depot is the fastest growing retailer in the U.S. by some accounts. It has a fascinating history of innovation and entrepreneurship. The company had some difficulties in the mid-2000s that some attribute to cultural clashes. However, during this period the company was able to take full advantage of the housing boom. Yet when the bubble burst, Home Depot was forced to claim substantial losses. Despite these loses Home Depot has weathered the storm fairly well and is in prime position to take advantage of an economic recovery; if it ever comes.

The Home Depot provided a different kind of home improvement store that was unmatched, because of their ability to sell to retailers and individuals, while fitting the needs of both. Smaller scale stores were around, but the massive supplies and range of choices the brand offered were unmatched. The current mission statement according to their corporate website is, “to provide the highest level of service, the broadest selection of products and the most competitive prices.” Based off of their website, I have come to the conclusion that they target hard working men.
