My Future Leader

As a future leader, I will have many opportunities to do things that have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of others. This impact will be shaped by the actions, beliefs and values that I have gained through my various life experiences, especially those experiences from my family. I have had many people that have influenced me in positive ways: my parents, my hockey coaches at Loomis Chaffee and at Cushing Academy, and some of my teachers at Cushing Academy. If I had to choose an individual that has impacted my life in terms of leadership, that person would be my father. Thus, I would like to emulate his values, beliefs and actions in my future. At the same time, he has also taught me how to be a leader. Due to his influence, I am a confident young man and am a positive role model to my family and friends. Thus, I have learned a tremendous amount about life and leadership because I have such a stable father figure. Denis Waitley (1995) in his book, Empire of the Mind, encourages the reader to explore his/her beliefs on leadership. He asks the reader to be cognizant of how these beliefs manifest themselves in our lives, by stating, "What the mind harbors, the body manifests in some way" (p. 119). My beliefs about leadership are shaped by my experiences with my father. I have compiled a list of good leadership qualities from watching him interact with others over the years.
Empathy: He has the ability to bond with his players, to understand and resonate with their feelings and emotions. He communicates on their level. He is compassionate with them when they are down and celebrates with them when they are up.
Positive Mental Attitude: He is a positive person. He keeps a smile on his face when things get tough, and sees the bright side of things. In addition, he seeks to find the positives in every negative situation, and tries to be philosophical.
Open to Change: He is able to acknowledge that the only real constant in life is change. He knows there is a place for tradition, but there is also a place
