Although it has only been five weeks in my Social and Business Structures class, I have learned a great deal. I have become more aware of my own learning style, and what a Christian worldview is. Also, this class has made me realize that I need to deepen my relationship with God. I completed several surveys to help determine my learning style. In each survey my scores showed me as having a, close to perfect balance, of each style. I was better able to identify each style when I was actually studying. As I worked through each assignment, I identified some consistent styles that helped. As embarrassing as it is; I have found that talking out loud is helpful. Also, taking a mental picture of what I am reading has helped with my retention.
Learning style: My learning style is considered to be auditory and kinesthetic. Yes, I prefer learning through listening and making notes at the same time. Being an auditory learner I depend on hearing and speaking as a main way of learning. I also learn from experiments or activity related to what I study in class.
At the beginning of the semester an assignment was given out in regards to assessing your learning styles. Upon doing the assignment I felt that I already knew the results I would obtain due to the fact that I did the same assignment my sophomore year of college. I was totally surprised with my results because they showed that I am becoming a more balanced learner. In previous assignments the results would usually show that I am more of one type of learner than another. My learning styles reflected that I am an active, sensory, visual and global learner. Knowing this aided in my success in this class as well as others because I started to apply this information into how I prepared or retained information for classes.
In the article “The Myth of Learning Styles,” authors Cedar Riener and Daniel Willingham (2010) question whether learning styles actually effectively play a role in a student’s learning. They begin by defining what a learning style is, which is explain as how a student best learns from the information they receive, and currently learning styles are most commonly described through sensory, such as visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learning styles (Riener & Willingham, 2010). Riener and Willingham (2010) argue that there are no learning styles, but rather that learning depends on a student’s prior knowledge, background, and interests. They address this by providing three myths of learning styles, one myth that is correct and two that are not.
The learning style I identified with is read/write. I basically learn things better by reading and writing things down. As you read and write things down it makes it easier for me to remember things better. If I continuously re-read things, I would remember them for a long time. And if I re-write things I’d be ably to remember it for a long time as well. Because I remember better if I read I always keep a highlighter near by because if I highlight something I know it’ll be important and it will make it easier for studying for test. Not only that, because I use different colored highlighters it makes me remember things more also. Yes, I did know that this was my preferred learning style before completing this assessment because,
The way that an individual learns can shape their entire life. I personally struggle when it comes to learning topics within math and sciences. After reading about the different learning styles I understand better as to why that is. It is common sense that everyone is different, so it makes sense that we all learn differently. There are eight learning styles that were outlined and discussed in the textbook. While reading and researching about them I was able to easily put each of the learning styles into three categories: (1) I have those characteristics, (2) I have some of those characteristics, and (3) I am definitely not that. I will discuss more in-depth the styles I feel I do possess which is, interpersonal, verbal, and intrapersonal.
People have different learning style. According to the VAK Learning Style Indicators, my learning style is quite not clear which is tend to be physical but very close to visual and auditory. Because of in university or college even high school in some cases is very stressful. Student live in a very intensive environment, so it is very significant to let the student know what their learning style is. Let them concentrate on using the learning style that they good at. So, I am going to introduce my current learning style, the tasks I find which is the most easiest or difficult and the strategies I think it would be useful in university due to my learning style.
My primary learning style is by visual and hands on methods since I scored the highest in those two areas. The scores in these areas were very close to each other with the visual score being an 8 and the hands on score being a 7, while my listening score being the lowest; a number 4. I believe that it is important for me to know this information about myself because it gives me insights on what my strengths, habits, and weaknesses are while at the same time, enabling me to find learning styles and strategies that are best effective for me. Without knowing this information, I could study for an endless amount of hours on a subject and still fail the exam because there is no point in learning or studying if you don’t absorb and retain the information
After taking the learning style inventory, I was not surprise to find that I am a global learner. However, I am almost a pretty good split between the two learning styles. But, when it comes to thinking and test taking I am both analytical and global.
Before I went to the ILC for the learning styles assessment, I had an idea of what my learning style was, but did not know what it really meant. I knew I was more of a visual or verbal learner, but I did not know how to use that in my everyday life.
This paper will identify which of the Kolb learning styles best suits me and why I think so. It will also give some examples from my past and present to support these findings. After determining, the learning styles that best fit me and completing an inventory exercise, I have concluded that I learn best using audio and visual techniques in the learning process. I agree with everything this exercise has brought to light. I never knew that these styles were the meaning by which I learned. I have also included examples as to how I see the use and benefits of these learning styles in my career.
As an instructor you should be aware of the different ways that adults learn. Adult learning is not a one size fits all. When it comes to learning style options one must take into consideration that, learners may fall under one or more learning style category. Overall most students use more than one mode of learning. The purpose of this essay is to explore the concept of using humor and “fun” teaching strategies in a classroom, in addition we will be discussing whether or not adults have special needs and requirements as learners and if teaching them should be handled differently than teaching children and adolescents.
When considering preferred styles of learning, it is probably more helpful to think of learning a range d styles we all have to some degree- “having strength in auditory learning”, for example, rather than “being an auditory learner”. The notion of a person having only one learning style is inappropriate, especially as our knowledge of learning styles is not complete by any means. We need to consider ways of accessing the full range of pupils’ learning strengths.
My learning style is a visual learner. I am able to comprehend and work to the best of my ability when I am able to see the problem and the work written to solve it. Seeing/taking detailed notes is easier for me to learn a lesson than listening to a discussion because I can see the work and word terms without worrying about forgetting them. I learn best as a visual learner because I am able to see all the steps to solve a problem and I am able to figure out where I might need to fix a mistake. During math class in eighth grade, I was able to completely understand a lesson that I considered confusing in previous years. Another time during math class, I got a good grade on a test, when I thought I was going to get a C. There are many things that
What is a learning style? Well a learning style is the way a person tends to learn best. It involves your preferred method of taking in, organizing, and making sense of information, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (2012). Some people prefer to learn by doing and touching, others prefer to learn by seeing, or by hearing the information. Still others learn using more than one learning style. If a person was interested in finding out what their particular learning style is would be to take the VARK questionnaire for learning styles. The most common learning style is the multimodal, but the learner
This assignment came to life because of the two theorists P. Honey and A. Mumford. They researched on how to put together a project in order to identify the learning styles. The starting point of this scheme was supported by the Kolb learning style inventory (LSI). Finally, they came up with the idea of a questionnaire. They gathered eighty questions together, containing four different learning styles along with characteristics of the person/s that might fit in. The image below represents the theory along with the learning styles produced.
