My peer is a 29-year-old Canadian, who has been studying in college for 11 years, and will be graduating next year with a Bachelors of Arts in applied linguistics, and a Bachelors of Science in psychology simultaneously. My peer believes that everything can be accomplished since they hasn’t been proven wrong yet. They said they wants to graduate in 2016 with a honor cord, because they has been studying in college for 11 years, and they doesn’t want to extend their graduation date. They is willing to go to a medical school or other graduate programs after graduating from Portland State University. After that, they is tempted to be an acupuncturist or works in any other Chinese medicine related occupations. They has set up numerous academic goals for themselves recently.
My peer feels extremely confident about their future, and believes that they is on the right track now. It seems like everything is going well. However, they has changed their majors many times within the last 11 years, such as chemistry, English, mathematics, pre-pharmacy, and so on. I have realized that persistence is one of the most influential factors of achieving goals. Therefore, I have chosen Goal-Setting Theory to help my peer for finding more feasible ways, which can help them to actualize all of their goals.
Problem diagnosis
During the last two weeks, I had conducted two interviews with my peer for gaining more in-depth understanding about how and why they set up those goals. From the interview, I
Some of the long term and short term goals and objectives were set for the student with
The goal that I established to address the element of weakness will address the need for an increase in individual student planning, specifically related to career readiness and success as well as post-secondary options. This goal addresses the attributes of a SMART goal in the following ways: Specific – I will develop and implement three classroom guidance lessons that cover the importance of career planning, the different career paths,
I realized that I still have a lot of work to do on this goal, because when SB checked in with me towards the end and asked me how I was feeling, the first thing that came out of my mouth was that I am fine. He helped me come to the realization that I said everything was fine, when I was obviously anxious. In this session I asked for feedback and to be called out on when I was or was not working on my goal, as I think it will help me recognize whether I am truly progressing towards my goal or not and become more aware on areas for improvement. I will make sure to share with group members when I am working on my goals so that everyone, including myself, is aware that I am trying to work on my goals and can provide me with some feedback.
These goals are important for students.
Hard work, dedication, and commitment. That’s what it takes to accomplish lifetime goals that are set by individuals. Setting goals at an early age is the smartest thing to do. It gives an excess amount of time to dedicate learning to the future that is ideal. Having a plan is step one to introducing one’s self into the real world.
While goals are considered as just hopes that somebody may have, they serve a greater purpose then one may think. A great tactic used very often is the S.M.A.R.T goal setting route. The acronym S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Realistic, and Timeframe (haupert). The most important piece of this is the “S”, being specific is an essential part of hitting a fitness lifestyle goal. If the goal is too broad of a goal, then it will be more difficult to plan out the steps that will be required to achieve the goal. A good example of this would be cooking instructions. Before beginning to create the final product, the producer has to gather ingredients and follow directions that are specifically laid out to create the meal or the chance of ending with a different outcome then you had hoped for is very likely
Ms. Subocz, Ms. Smith, and Melissa’ mother should work together to build a set of goals for her. It is important to be careful how the goal is constructed. The goals set for Melissa should be task-oriented or learning-oriented goals versus performance-driven or ego-driven goals. Learning-oriented goals will help her think along the lines of “how can I make this possible?” ; whereas ego-driven goals would make her think “how can I outperform so-and-so?”
Both long-range and short-term goals will be considered. Realization of the short-term goals, whether they be mastery of math facts, accomplishing a reading goal, or completing a science project, will motivate students as they pursue more far-reaching goals, such as graduation or employment. Effort does indeed determine success (Seider, 2012), and encouraging students to persevere will help them reach their goals. Another strategy for success is providing “sustained and deliberate practice” (Seider, 2012, pg. 144). Practice is necessary for success in any venture, including academics. Through goal-setting and practice, students will be motivated to succeed and will develop performance character traits of excellence and
The first goal setting interview I had was with one of my students by the name of Skyler. Based off of my interaction with Skyler these past few days, he is always looking for ways to get better with academics as well as a become a better scholar. Not to mention, Skyler is a high performing student in reading and math. When asked, “What is something you would like to work on for the school year?”, he responded “I would like to do better in math and cooperate.” Skyler sometimes gives me a hard time when it comes to cooperating in class. It is good to see that he also chose a behavior that I have discussed with him on several occasions. Once his goal was set, I asked about the importance of this particular goal and how will the goal be reached.
2. What was your personal system for ensuring that you accomplished your goals? Describe it. Did it
Students who have career goals often achieve higher GPA's and often have less stress in college. When students stress in college, it can add an astronomical amount of problems, not only in college but at home as well. All of this stress will soon become unbearable and the student will choose to drop out to relieve some of their stress. Career goals enable a student to prioritize their college semesters and classes. Without prioritizing how their college education will pan out, students are unable to visualize their ending goal and one setback could cause the student to become so stressed out that they just give up.
Sometimes it seems like life is inhibiting me from achieving my goals. I define my objectives as I see them. I associate them with my values. Knowing that the task at hand is
Two types of goals that Fitzsimons and Bargh focus their study on are academic and social goals. The two researchers tested their idea by having students participate in a questionnaire that asked participants to list four personal goals that they associated with their mother, romantic partner,
Setting goals can be challenging to say the least if a person does not put forth the energy it takes. Goal setting is a vital advancement in a students ' high-quality development. "This program is unique because all students (regular, special education, and at-risk) can and do benefit from learning the process. The six steps to success are easy to remember and simple to teach because they do not require extra paperwork or additional preparation by the teachers. Students remain in control throughout the process, allowing the teacher to observe, assess, and evaluate student progress" (Rader, Laura A, Jan/Feb 2005, 123-125). I chose to attend school
