Fitness has grown to a multibillion dollar industry. The idea of fitness has influenced millions of lives whether the correlation was as a career, lifestyle, or an occasional hobby. People globally compete in bodybuilding, physique, and powerlifting meets earning thousands of dollars depending on their successes. Though they seem pointless at first, even the sixty second long infomercials on television advertising the new and approved anywhere gym equipment or perfect diet has made the viewer at least contemplate their health. People often confuse fitness as a sole concept of either exercising or dieting, but fitness depends immensely on both. Some people in the fitness industry manipulate diet and exercise to create the body stature they desire.

The philosophy I carry for my studies in athletic training incorporates a few fundamental areas, which I believe are of importance to the athletic training program and will continue on into the labor force after my education has been completed. These elements include: the profession itself, to include advocating for patients and professional causes related to athletic training. The functional aspects of my educational path. A continued honorable conduct while working with clients as well as outside in the general public, and a professional rapport with not only athletes, but my colleagues as well. I incorporate these several areas in my professional philosophy because, I understand they embody points of view which aid in developing the manner in which I carry myself and the behavior I present to the community.
“In its present form, personal training only dates back a few decades, yet it is among the fastest growing professions in the U.S.” (Holt). In the 80’s and 90’s personal trainers were predominantly heavy lifters who looked like they could soon compete in a bodybuilding contest. The muscular physique automatically qualified each of them as “guru” in the fitness world and helped quickly build a clientele. Towards the late-90's, the situation started to change: gyms became less and less of an intimidating environment for a wide category of people with no desire to become “huge.” Personal trainers of a new generation expanded their specialization to weight loss, cardio vascular
When it comes to fitness, clients believe they will see instant results. A certain percent of individuals are impatient and expect to see changes within a week of exercises. Whereas the other percent will understand it takes more than a few sets of sit ups and planks to achieve their ultimate goal. Over the course of the summer, I was able to see the different workout personalities at D1 Jackson’s “Boot Camp” sessions.

During each session, I learned about my client’s goals and what they were looking to gain out of each workout session. For example, after talking with Dana, I discovered that she has to run a mile over the summer, so she really wanted to strengthen her cardiovascular endurance through Crossfit workouts. Moreover, as Olivia’s client, I believe she was really receptive to my comments on what exercises I wanted to focus on to achieve my goals of strengthening my abs and upper body.

On top of having to wake up on a Monday morning, the gym students of Wilson Southern Middle school hear “Alright guys it's time for the mile,” from their gym teachers. Kvetching and groaning is the wonderful reaction the teachers get when they enter the gym. Every semester Wilson Southern’s gym class is required to complete the mile as part of their fitness testing. 80% of the students surveyed at Wilson Sothern don’t enjoy doing the mile. They say the reason for this is because “it’s too much work”.After talking to the gym teachers, they explained that the traditional middle school girl student’s weight should be around ninety- five pounds to 115 pound for girls and for boys eighty-eight pounds to 110 pounds. That is not the case here. The teachers have been very worried about the student’s health as well as the state law requirements. Therefore, every student is required to complete a mile as a part of their fitness testing. This mile run was not made to torture the students but to prevent them from any health issues that could present them in the future.

The fitness industry is one that is rarely thought of as an electronic industry. However, in recent years, more and more fitness related smartphone applications including workout planners, calorie counters, support forums, and many more fitness centered resources have become available to the public. This big move from time sensitive face-to-face fitness instruction to convenient face-to-screen instruction has changed the way that the fitness industry operates. With the rising rollout of fitness apps geared toward the convenience of the user, fitness instructors, personal trainers, and the like have had to go to extreme measures in order to keep up with the rapidly changing digital fitness environment. This paper will outline the evolution of the fitness industry to illustrate its move from an entirely brick and mortar operation to a largely electronic industry. This paper will also discuss the reasons behind the switch and the pros and cons associated with each way of getting fit.
