Florence Nightingale, Nelson Mandela, and Mahatma Gandhi all have one thing in common: they are leaders who made positive historical impacts. Inspirational in the eyes of their followers, these leaders used their eloquence and influence to mobilize a team and achieve shared goals. However, as much as history likes to show how they powerful and superior they were, one thing is certain: these leaders were the ultimate servants because they served the people and the purpose they lead. My experience as a Co-President of my school’s National Honor Society has taught me how to serve as a better leader. My school’s chapter of the NHS has 133 members; I strive each day to better our branch of NHS and to become a better leader and servant to these members. In April 2015, I helped manage the annual Tiny Tigers Fun Fair; proceeds went to Special Spaces Chicagoland, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital Cardiac Care Unit, and Little Giraffe Foundation. Honestly, I am honored to be a part of this philanthropic endeavor; however, planning for this philanthropic event has put me in some high-stress situations, where I was able delegate tasks efficiently while keeping our members’ capabilities in mind. Besides my experience in the National Honor Society, I also serve as a classroom leader in my church’s children’s ministry. My purpose as a classroom leader is to inspire and motivate young kindergarteners and first graders in pursuing a deeper spiritual relationship with God. I am there for the kids and their love for Christ; I wake up early each Sunday to make sure their spiritual needs are a priority. Working with little kids truly humbles me as a person, and it motivates me to put other’s needs before my own
When previously thinking of how to describe myself, the word that came to mind was “ordinary.” I grew up in a small town, went to an even smaller high school, and both of my parents showered me with love. I had a charmed childhood, but I never thought there was anything extraordinary about myself. I felt as though I had the same-old story as everyone else. I had always felt pretty simple – pretty ordinary.
I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue my love of performing arts in a safe, creative and accepting environment. Therefore, through my time and influence, I want to give back to my school and community. Every day I strive to share my positivity, humor and thoughtfulness with my peers. I would be excited to be able to help others with a group of like-minded people in the Performing Arts Academy’s National Honor Society. If inducted, I will be an extremely involved and necessary leader in the organization. I will use my strengths in leadership, conflict resolution and compassion to move the National Honor Society forward through scholarship and service.
The National Honor Society has been one of the most influential organizations that I have been apart of. My first year as a member, I was intimidated by the projects and sheer amount of work being produced through this group, but as the year evolved I evolved with it. I realized that I could do so much with the National Honor Society and ran for Vice President, one of my best friends being the President. By being apart of the National Honor Society, I have been able to fine tune my leadership skills within two different settings, a full council and a committee meeting. By learning how to engage the participants and delegate tasks to either the strength of the members or skills that they want to develop, we are able to make incredible ideas
My community has always been an important part of my life. I have actively served in my community through 4-H, and National Honor Society (NHS). I joined 4-H when I was 6 years old and since then I have served in many different ways. My 4-H club has local flower planters in town, and every week we take turns watering them. I have helped clean the road ditches in the surrounding areas to help out the environment. I have also delivered May Day baskets, Valentines, and gone Christmas caroling for the elders that live in the manner in my community. As one of the older members of my 4-H club, I think it is important to show the younger children that you should respect and help the elderly of your community. I am the type of student who is willing to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind. As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large. I possess excellent community service skills, as they are evidently presented on my Action Team, Interact club, and the American Red Cross records. With all three clubs combined, I have obtained over 250 community service hours since my freshman year of high school. Because National Honor Society places a large emphasis on service, I would be the perfect example of an NHS member. In fact, community service and leadership intertwine since leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. For example, the Action Team was collecting donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society through a project called “Pennies for Patients.” Our team gradually became idle in collecting money, so I decided to take the initiative to collect spare change from customers outside of my town’s Farmer’s Market. By the end of the day, I raised over $400 alone, and in total, our entire team raised over $1000. My school’s chapter of the National Honor Society is filled with remarkable students who demonstrate excellent character, leadership, scholarship, and service. There is no question that the society’s members are exceptional, but they are human beings nonetheless, and thus, they succumb to human nature. As president of this human-comprised group, I am always aware of the group’s status, and I seldom fail to notice when the status is low. One of the most difficult situations I have faced hitherto in my presidency arose from orchestrating an annual charity volleyball tournament, also known as the annual “new officer initiation” event, a test to evaluate if we new officers really had the organizational skills required to run an honor society of approximately 100 members. This tournament necessitated meticulous preparation, preparation which began the very day my fellow officers and I received notification of our official positions. Perhaps the most difficult part of this process, however, was eliciting volunteer help from the large pool of willing students in an efficient, efficacious, and equitable manner. The function of an organization such as the National Honor Society is to educate students on leadership skills and provide ample opportunities to get involved and further enhance success. NHS can be a platform for students to showcase their commitment to advanced education and indulge in helping the community. Consuming factors of NHS include community service opportunities, leadership practices, teamwork, and the drive for growth and progress towards our futures. I expect that NHS can bring great opportunities like possible scholarships and academic and characteristic recognition. Leadership is a quality that provides personal, professional, and organizational survival, which is why it demands a special attention. Either world, in general, community, group, or any organization, in particular, requires a certain structure of functioning that would support reaching a successful outcome of all the processes inside it. Therefore, it is natural that there are those who lead and those to be led on each level of the life spheres. Only due to the subdivision on leaders and “subordinates’’ it is possible to achieve common goals and avoid the chaos. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of what it means to be a leader requires a meticulous analysis of a concept of leadership itself from different angles.
Leadership is a concept that has continuously evolved through history. No matter which nationality, race, background, religion or education, leaders around the world are constantly challenge to find resolutions to the world current conflicts. Regardless of different motivators, circumstances and approach, world leaders are an example of dedication and their main responsibility is to gather followers and encourage them to together make a change. World leaders work with passion to reach a purpose, they nurture leadership, engage with followers, create trusting relationships and embark in a journey in the quest of powerful solutions (WLF, 2015). Bill Gates stated “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others” (WLF, 2015); but leadership without goals and vision is not complete. These two elements are necessary to fulfill the purpose of a great leader.
Several definitions of leadership have been established. Bringing these definitions together, a common description is advanced. As such, leadership can be acknowledged as the activity of leading a community of people or an organization. It involves four essential aspects. Foremost is devising a clear vision. In line with Avolio and Yammarino (2013)’s thoughts, this is to say that a leader is mandated with the responsibility of setting the direction of an organization. As such, leaders have to identify where they want their organizations to be in a certain period into the future. Leaders help themselves as well as their followers to do the correct things. They set bearing, form a moving vision, and make something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you have to go to "win" as a group or an association; and it is alert, energizing, and rousing. And a good leader should have several important attributes. (Bennis, 1990)
A leader’s position and responsibility would therefore be akin to that of a shepherd leading sheep or the captain of a boat that is taking people to a destination, who had to steer the boat through dangerous and convoluting waters. The lives, the prospects and hopes of the passengers depend on how well the captain performs as a leader.
In view of the many calls for me to comment on this important subject matter, let me begin by saying that Leadership in my understanding is an art consisting of skills that are studied, practiced and mastered. Among these, the relational skills of effective leadership of exhortation must be cultivated in a way that spurs others on to higher levels of achievement by turning them into leaders- accomplishing extraordinary things by enabling others to act. A leader must be open and willing to respond to correction as a critical component of their character.
Leadership can be defined as someone who has a positive and influential impact in their society, country, university or organization. A leader promotes interactions, motivates his/her peers and maintains a significant level of respect to everyone despite their ethnicity, race or culture. A leader is inspirational and has the ability to adapt to different environments. A leader is willing to sacrifice personal time in order to help out with certain tasks throughout the week. Most importantly, a leader can be anyone, whether it is a big brother or sister, a parent, or even a best friend who exemplifies great confidence in order to assist and lead others. Everyone is entitled to their own perspective as to what a leader should be like, but what exactly makes a leader a LEADER? Who is capable of leading and why is it important? In my paper, I will be discussing 5 leadership qualities that are essential for a leader to possess, as well as the role of leadership, characteristics that make a successful leader, examples of leadership, and how diversity plays a significant role in leadership today.
