My time with Cal State LA and internship is coming to end, and there are so many mixed feelings that I have. I am nervous, excited, scared, relieved, and so forth. For this quarter, my seminar class and internship have focused a lot on termination, with Cal State LA, clients, and myself. The termination process has helped me deal and cope with my mixed emotions, because it makes it easier for me to end a chapter in my life, and transition into a new one. At my internship, LAUSD had a mandatory “End of the Year” training that required all of the interns to attend. At the training, they talked about how we should set aside time for ourselves, self-care. Social work can be get very stressful in a school environment, so it is our responsibility to make time for ourselves, and recover mentally. I am definitely going to a mental break this upcoming summer. For example, I got accepted into the MSW program at USC, and I am not taking any classes this summer. I am aware that the MSW program is very intense and rigorous, that is why I am giving myself time to just relax, and spend time with my family and friends. At my internship, I have four clients that were assigned to me, and I am in the process of terminating with them. After reflecting about the time I spent with my clients, I feel positive that I was able to see them grow maturely. For my first my client, he is a Fifth Grade student who had a serious problem of not controlling his anger. He would constantly get
When working with all clients there is a need as a practitioner to use techniques that incorporate, promote a therapeutic relationship. While these may be presented differently with each client the practitioners need to be using three main skills. These are using Unconditional positive regard, being genuine with clients always and while you may not have waked in a similar situation as your client, the use of empathy supports the therapeutic relationship.
The impact of saying good-bye and actually leaving did not hit me until the day of my departure. Its strength woke me an hour before my alarm clock would, as for the last time Missy, my golden retriever, greeted me with a big, sloppy lick. I hated it when she did that, but that day I welcomed her with open arms. I petted her with long, slow strokes, and her sad eyes gazed into mine. Her coat felt more silky than usual. Of course, I did not notice any of these qualities until that day, which made me all the more sad about leaving her.
There were times where it was difficult working with clients and keeping a professional demeanor while providing them with services. For example, I interned with the Richland County Department of Social Services during the spring semester of my senior year. During this placement, my supervisor and I met with a client who no longer wanted to attend high school. The entire semester my supervisor and I worked to encourage the student to enroll back in school or to explore taking courses online. Assisting this client was a challenge because I did not want to allow my personal values to affect my practice. Realizing that education is the key to success and that the client would have limited opportunities in adulthood without a high school education, I would often become frustrated with the client. It can be said I was beginning to allow my personal values to affect my practice. After realizing my personal desires were intriguing practice, I discussed with my supervisor how to put my thoughts and opinions on hold in order to serve the client in the most professional manner. After doing so she recommended I learn to accept the fact that I cannot save every client I work with, and that I should just continue helping the client to the best of my ability and
During your undergraduate studies, you learned to assess your client’s issues and/or concerns and your planning process for intervention, you decided with your client what behaviors to target for change.
# Please describe how you have prepared for your intended major, including your readiness to succeed in your upper-division courses once you enroll at the university.
I am writing to express my interest in the classroom assistant position at UCLA Lab School that is available in the work study job search at myucla. I have much experience working closely with elementary teachers to assist in classroom management and activities. It will be a pleasure for me to share my teaching assistance knowledge and experience with your institute.
Following up on my last field journal, I have successfully terminated the relationships with my clients at the agency. As I anticipated, I did not have any issues during this process. I am both surprised and not at the same time at the range of emotions I feel about leaving and terminating. I am truly a bit sad that I will not be working with my long-term clients anymore. Overall, I am mostly excited to have some time off and develop professionally in other ways.
Students normally feel more refreshed after breaks and are willing to get back into learning and doing school work. Since there are many breaks in a year-round schedule, students learn more due to the fact that they receive many breaks to get refreshed. People may think the traditional schedule is better because you get a long summer break, but it is not necessarily better. Coming back to school in September after a long relaxing summer break, students tend to forget everything they learned the previous school year.
During the fall semester of my junior year, my Aerospace Engineering teacher had a sign outside of his door about a program at NASA for high school juniors. Since I was interested in engineering, specifically Aerospace and NASA I decided to apply. So that night at the end of September I came home and filled out the application and wrote the essay and letters to my state representatives. I had told my parents at that point and they were excited and of course hoped I made it. I thought, “There are thousands applying and I won’t make it.”. Little did I know how wrong that thought was. When I received an email from NASA it stated Congratulations and that was when I was like: “WOW!”. I was shocked to say the least, but proud that I had made it into this prestigious program at NASA, that has now changed my life.
However it can be argued that the more frequent breaks throughout the year will leave students feeling refreshed and ready to continue learning when they get back. In the proposition detailed above, students will have a series of breaks throughout the school year, with the longest being three weeks over the winter holidays. This gives ample amounts of time for families to vacation and celebrate together and hopefully leave the students feeling refreshed and ready to learn when they get back. It was also indicated by administrators that “renewed motivation and continuous injection of new ideas maintained a higher level of enthusiasm than [students] had experienced in their previous traditional calendar schools” and that they fully believed this was a critical factor in improving student performance throughout the year (Shields). It should also be noted that the vast majority of jobs offered globally do not have a summer break, and by shortening summers from 13 weeks to 7, students will be more prepared to enter the work force once out of school, and should have an easier time transitioning into the year round life as opposed to students used to taking 10 to 13 weeks off at
One’s schedule can get so messed up that no one would have any spare time left at all ‘’not have enough time to take vacations without a long summer break’’ (Chen, p. 9). But for the parents who manage getting students to school, practice, or whatever it may be it can be a real scheduling nightmare.’’ Plus it’s not likely your employer would negotiate with you on the days you can and can’t come in due to school work. ‘’Shorter and more frequent breaks can interfere with job opportunities.’’ (Chen, p. 9) It’s either you're there or not!
I am usually able to cope with endings fairly well. I get sad thinking about endings for maybe a day or two and then am ready to move on. As I think about ending my practicum, I get excited to move on to the next step in my life. However, I also get sad realizing that I will miss the people that I had the opportunity to work with, and I do not know if I will get to see them again. I am a little bummed that I was not able to see the whole adoption process with the same family, but I am also thankful that I was able to see the whole process with different families. When it comes to endings, I like to spend time with everyone, so that I can say my goodbyes at the same time. My supervisor threw me a little going away party, so that was a good way to have closure with the team, and was then able to meet with individuals to say goodbye.
To begin, throughout summer break students lose information they previously learned. For instance, learning foreign languages takes continual practice. If a student doesn’t have enough money for a course they will not be able to practice during the three-month break.
Working as a part-time employee for Victoria Secret, Pink while attending school full-time at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College is one of many difficult challenges I endure while pursuing my education.
The break calls for staying up late and waking up whenever you want to. Everyone works so hard during the school year, so they deserve that free time. Summer times are stress free, relaxing, and basically fun. You don’t have to worry about homework, projects, and studying for a test. One of my favorite summer pastimes is staying up late watching movies and eating junk food, and then waking up late and having brunch.
