Diversity can be defined as being different whether it is origin, race, ethnicity, sex, religion, or anything else. A place where diversity based on many factors but especially ethnicity may be experienced is an individuals place of work. Companies do not hire based on your ethnic background. They want to hire people who have the skills they need for the job and are willing to work hard. Unfortunately, as much as people say they do not discriminate there have been people who have come out and said that they felt they were treated unfairly. I decided that I chose to further my knowledge on the Native American culture because I do not know much about it and I know a few people who come from strong backgrounds. Native Americans arrived in America by hiking over 12,000 years ago. The hiked across a “land bridge” into Asia which is now called Alaska. They were hunters and gatherers and the animal that was being hunted is seen as a “willing …show more content…
It is a good thing and diversity in the work place is an even better thing. It allows for different points of view and ideas to be brought to the table. The Native American culture is well respected and heavily celebrated for some individuals. How they came to America is quite interesting and learning about how they survived and what family meant to them is so cool to learn about. I had the opportunity to interview someone who comes from a very strong Native American background and just from the interview I could tell how much it means to her and her family. I am do not come from a family who celebrates their ethnicity and culture so I enjoyed getting to know Mrs. Hillsburg and background. I think it is so important for diversity to be embraced not just in a place of work but also with friends and family. If we can all celebrate our differences rather than tear each other down for them this world will become a better place for
Workplace diversity is when there is diverse culture of individuals in the workplace. It is when there is a value placed on the variety of ideas, race, ethnicities, religion, gender, sexuality and orientation, which is flourishing in an environment. Depending on your employer and workplace, workplace diversity can vary based off several different factors. Usually, there is a preferential standpoint taken on the matter and it can be either display a high or a low context culture of diversity. According to Mason (2013) Workforce diversity has been described as “a double-edged sword; it has the potential for positive and negative outcomes” (p.659). Workplace diversity is important in a business setting because it carries forward a combination of different types of people to work together in unity, encourages uniqueness, innovative, creative approaches, and supports interesting divergent ideas to accomplish tasks or goals.
The American Indian is a very unique and integral part of Amreican history, with a very rich and beautiful cultural background. There are over 558 federally recognized tribes in America right now,and another 126 who have applied for federal recognition. At the time of first contact with Europeans, the United states was fully occupied by Indian Nations and some 300 Indian languages existed, approximately 106 of which are still spoken. The diversity and hetrogeneity of the American Indian community cannot be overstated.
The world is constantly changing and people are making a strong attempt to keep up. What happens when culture and the ways you know to be true are challenged by the ways of the world? The Native American people faced these, along with many other, challenges as Anglo-American society began to blossom and overtake the area. What challenges have the Diné faced while trying to remain true to their culture, yet reside in a non-native society? It what ways have these experiences altered their way of life for better or worse? Is it possible to be a part of such a swift moving society and hold true to traditional values and culture? The Navajo people have tried the best they can to carry on with traditions, but as the world changes the people must
American’s oldest minority race is the American Indian, also known as “First People”, “People of the Fourth World”, indigenous people or Native Americans (Avitabile, Kleiner, (2001, pg. 1). They were here when Columbus landed on the continent (and many centuries before then) and have been intertwined in the history of America ever since. This is clearly indicated, as the American Indians were the only minority group mentioned in the United States Constitution (Huyser, Sakamoto, Takei, 2007, pg. 542). After such a long and connected history, it is sad to note that the American Indians and their reservations are home to some of the highest known poverty and unemployment rates. According to the Economic Policy
Workplace Diversity does not only refer to those groups that have been discriminated against or that are different from the dominant or privileged groups, but to the mixture of differences, similarities and tensions that can exist among the elements of a pluralistic mixture.
As far as America’s existence dates, we as Americans have been taught to believe that when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, that although the land was preoccupied with Native Americans, that Europeans were indeed the first Americans. That has since then been refuted, now most modern day Americans have been taught to believe that the Native Americans were the indigenous American people. Although, it has been proven that Native Americans occupied the lands of the Americas before Christopher Columbus left Europe, Columbus is still praised for “discovering” America. New evidence now shows that long before the nomadic hunter gathers of northeast Asia traveled across the land bridge 12,000 years ago, and before Christopher Columbus
Diversity in any organisation includes hiring and promoting a workforce of people with differences. These differences include race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical abilities and economic backgrounds. The premise of a diverse workplace is that employees are
Before white people had ever set foot in the new world, the 9-10 million natives had already inhabited America. “The name “Indian” was given them by Christopher Columbus who mistakenly believed he had landed in the Indies” ( "Native American History" ). The Native Americans were people who could adapt to their particular regions and made wise use of the natural resources around them. They believed in respecting the land and its natural gifts. “We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who can't speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees”( Qwatsinas ). They became proficient fishermen, hunters, farmed crops such as corn, and built homes
Diversity is what makes people different, not just culturally but in human differences. Having a multitude of differences in the workforce gives an organization the ability to use many ideas to reach a common goal. A person could say that a diverse group of people together in one room can accomplish greater achievements than a room filled with the same types of individuals. Managers understand the concept of diversity, and how important diversity is to the success of a company’s ability to implement programs that continue to develop a harmonious and diverse workplace. The recognition that diversity is a reality in the workforce has generated an enormous amount of activity over the years among leaders in business, government, and civil
As companies become more diverse in the work field employees are getting harder to manage and understand. One issue in the global market today is workplace diversity. Workplace diversity is defined as all characteristics and experiences that defined each employee as individuals, but it can also be misunderstood as discrimination against employees. Diversity can include race, ethnicity, sex, religion, disability and sexual orientation discrimination. One reason why workplace diversity is important is because when you respect your employees productivity rate rises and many companies do not know that. A diverse workplace targets to create an inclusive culture that values and uses the talents of all employees.
There has also been a demand to increase women in the workforce because of more “women-like” jobs.
Currently I am employed with a company that some may say is the 'melting pot' of diversity. Working for Corporate Safeway, now Albertsons-Safeway, I can appreciate how judgement free the environment is in our work place. They are open to hiring minorities, LGBT, (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), disabled veterans and that's just to name a few. Hiring a staff that is of many different cultures, nationalities and belief backgrounds is a great way to show the awareness of diversity. I am a true believer that a great business starts at the top. If management can provide their employees with the skills and knowledge of working in a diverse setting this will lead to a steady and smooth work environment. Knowing how to properly and correctly carry yourself is the first step in working with the different variety of customers or co-workers you may encounter.
Diversity in the workplace means bringing together people of different ethnic backgrounds, religions and age groups into a cohesive and productive unit. Advances in communication technology, such as the Internet and cellular phones, have made the marketplace a more global concept. In order to survive, a company needs to be able to manage and utilize its diverse workplace effectively. Managing diversity in the workplace should be a part of the culture of the entire organization.
Diversity can be defined as the differences among the people working in the same workplace. Those differences can be related to gender, race, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, culture or personalities.
