Nature Vs. Nurture Debate

What determines who you are or what you will become? The debate between nature versus nurture is trying to figure this out. According to “Essentials of Psychology”, Jeffrey S. Nevid (2012) Nature versus nurture is the debate about how genetics and nature determine our behavior. In other words, have your attitude, behavior and health problems developed because of how you were raised or who you came from. It is a debate that has stumped psychologists for centuries. The study of twins, both identical and fraternal, have made it easier for psychologists to figure out this debate. So what is the answer to this age old debate; Nature or Nurture?

Psychologist Donald Hebb once answered the question of nature vs. nurture by responding with a similar question, “Which contributes more to the area of a rectangle, its length or its width?” I find this to be a very interesting and true argument. As we know, a rectangle’s area can be determined by multiplying its length by its width, or vice versa. If either one of these variables is unknown, you cannot determine what the area is. They both have an equal contribution to the equation. Similarly, it is impossible to single out either nature or nurture as the reason that somebody becomes a psychopath. They both contribute equally to the equation.

Three things that I find interesting were nature verses nurture controversy because we as a human being always look at one side and make a huge deal of the stuff for example, negative behavior often credit to neighborhoods and environment. We do not see the nature affects the nurture and nurture affects the nature. Another one was genetic links because we do inherit certain gene from our parent for example, my mom is allergic to beef meat so as I and therefore, I’m unable to digest too. Next is outdoor play because playing has nothing to with vision especially when people believe watching TV constantly can dim our vision because many children in developing countries do not have access to television or internet and still got problems with

For many years, there has been on the ongoing debate that is referred to as nature vs. nurture. It poses a question that many theorists have contested. Do human personalities and behaviors relate to our genetic makeup, or are we directly influenced by the environment and people that we are subjected to? What is more important, genes or environment? While some theorists take either one side over the other, some believe that both nature and nurture play an active role in human development.

Identical twins are different in many different ways. My personality has changed a lot over time. Studies show that nurture has more effect on your personality than nature. Nurture has more of an influence than nature.

The nature versus nurture debate is a long and very difficult debate that has been going on for a long time and has gone in very many different directions. One side of people say kids become bad or good because they inherit the genes from their parents and are that way. The other side says kids become the way they are by watching someone's actions or hearing something. If a parent of some person acts in aggression or in gleefulness in front of a child they will mimic that action and do the same thing. Nature is genes inherited by parents causing people act certain ways. Nurture is children being influenced by events they have witnessed.

When one thinks about child development, are personalities and traits produced by genetics or shaped by the environment? Or, is there a relationship between nature and nurture with regards to child development? The debate continues. While some believe “nature and nurture work together, others believe they are separate and opposing influences” (McDevitt, 2010).

Nature vs. nurture has been a longstanding and heated debate since the very foundation of the psychological practice. Nature (that which is inborn and inherited) and nurture (that which is experienced from birth onward) both play significant roles in the development of our character and behavior. While both are imperative to human development, nurture influences one’s character and behavior more than nature. This is due to the impact of various geographical and cultural settings, the influence of other people, and the erratic nature of the universe and its potentiality.

We all have parents that take care of us, giving what we need making sure that what life throws at us than we know how to respond back and interact with society. Involvement in society at a later age is dependent in which one is raised, so the parents have a big part in raising their kid making sure they are having proper social interaction. Any amount of social interaction is going to have a positive benefit, for young kids or any age. One of the most famous debates in Psychology is the Nature vs. Nurture debate, which has been going on since the time of Aristotle. The aspect within this debate comes to the question of; did the aspects of our behavior become because we inherited our characteristics from our parents know as the Nature? The other question leads up to our behavior of; did we get our characteristics from what we learned from the environment through experience? Both of these arguments are neither right nor wrong and can work in many situations. People known as empiricists look towards the human mind saying that at birth the mind is a tabula rasa, meaning a blank slate and filled up with the result of experience and supporting the Nurture aspect. So when an infant forms an attachment with the mother than he/she is responding from the love and attention, which the mother is giving to the infant. When your at the hospital and the nurse hands you your beautiful perfect little creation, does he grow up and become a murderer because of the genes his mother and father handed down to him? Or was this due to years of abuse and anger due to his environment. The Nature vs. Nurture debate has been a topic that has been deliberated over and over again ever since the idea was invented. Ever heard the expression "peer pressure"? This means the influence of members of one's group. Due to one group member pushing the other group member to smoke can make that person feel they need to smoke to be "cool". The people we surround ourselves amongst can seriously influence who we become as people. Now that person in that group will probably become a smoker. Our parents play the biggest key role in the choices we make and how we end up as human beings.

For more than a century, researchers and psychologists, such as Sir Francis Galton, Charles Darwin, Sigmund Freud and many others, have been trying to understand how people are transformed by their environment. Researchers have mainly argued whether it is in fact our environment or rather genetics, our biological pre-wiring, which has influenced human behavior. This concept ultimately facilitated what is now known as the Nature versus Nurture debate. The Nature aspect states that human behavior is predetermined by our inherited genes or is the product of our innate behavior. The Nurture side of the disagreement postulates that human behavior stems from acquired attributes through individual learning and experiences. Correspondingly, the Object Relations Theory in psychoanalytic psychology supports the position that a person’s natural environment (i.e. family, peers, acquaintances, society) forms human development. The Object Relations theory stresses that it is the relationships between people, more specially family, often between mother and child, that crafts the human psyche.
