Disney Films Portray a Negative influence on Kids Lives in Today’s World. The image that Disney films portray their stories is a very powerful product that can influence our kids’ lives negatively. One example of this is the film The Princess and the Frog. In this movie, we can see that an African American girl named Tiana lived poor in the 1920’s. The plot of this story is that this poor girl wanted to finish the dream of her father, which is to create a restaurant. Towards the end she ends up marrying Prince Naveen of Maldonia. Like most of Disney’s movies, the damsel in distress ends up marrying the prince charming, resolving all her social and financial problems. The message here is that it is acceptable to sell your dignity in exchange for money. For younger kids this can be an example of how to proceed or acquired things in life. In this film, Disney also shows that hard work is not enough in order to accomplish your dreams. Throughout the film, Tiana is depicted to be a hard worker just like her father was. As the plot progresses, Tiana’s hard work is not enough to accomplish her goals. She has to make other arrangements to achieve her objectives. In a scene, the realtor makes a remark to Tiana saying that “a little woman of your background” shouldn’t be running a business at all. Additionally, the realtor undermines Tiana by stating that she is “better of where you are” (00:24:10-00:24:49). With this remark, he was diminishing and discriminating her for being a woman and being poor. For a child less fortunate financially, it can be disappointing that hard work will not get them far without money. For a little girl, it also diminishes her self-esteem; which prevents them to reach their full potential. Disney’s films also label negatively the behavior differences in social status, which creates a discriminating stereotype of how a wealthy person should treat less fortunate individuals.
