The television shows that depict law enforcement give the citizens both positive and negative views on police agencies. Some of the positive effects would be trusting in law enforcement, believing in the court system, and the overall goodness of the men and women who serve and protect our nation domestically. Some of the negative effects would be that the shows portray cops in an immoral way, wrongly portraying the various specialties of law enforcement, and that all criminals are convicted by a jury. As a teenager, my favorite law enforcement show to watch was NYPD Blue. I felt that it represented real life scenarios and the highs and lows of being a detective in one of the toughest cities. It depicted the characters as hard-nosed,
The first era of law enforcement was the political era, which started in 1840 and ended in 1930. Evolution of Policing in the US-Influence of the Political Era reports that, “During this era, police performed much more comprehensive services, such as running soup kitchens, finding shelter for the homeless and helping immigrants find jobs, in addition to dealing with criminal activity. They were closely integrated within their communities and for those within the political sphere of the elected leaders within the community; the friendly image of the Irish beat cop emerges”(2013). Since it was the first era of policing there was a lot of pros and cons, compare to the era we are in now. Scott from Police
When an individual chooses a career in law enforcement they realize it can be a very rewarding, yet dangerous career path to take. Most people often hear about all the potential dangers such as officer involved shootings and physical confrontations before making the choice to join the ranks of the few who will always stand for what is right. However, today there is a new danger to law enforcement known as the mass media which adds a whole new realm of difficulty to an already taxing job. The negative effects of the media can be felt nationwide by law enforcement agencies and these effects include creating a divided community, unrealistic expectations, and the devastation of current and future law enforcement careers. This presentation
When it comes to a TV show that depicts Law Enforcement, there are tons of things to choose from. For instance, the ABC television series, Castle, was one of the first things that came to mind. It depicts a New York City Detective who works for the 12th Precinct along with a famous writer who uses her as his muse. They work together as a fierce twosome to solve homicides in the New York City area. In the show, the writers portray law enforcement as those who never give up and fight for justice in their hometown. Detective Beckett, who was one of the main characters in the show, is shown to fight her own battles of not knowing who killed her mother and tracking down all those involved her mother’s murder to seek justice and some revenge.
The police officers of today have much more of a society impacted relationship with their jobs than they have ever had before. The police have adapted to better work with the communities that they are involved with compared to just overseeing them. This has been a really successful transformation on most accounts. The biggest affect that the police involvement has produced is cooperation. The community, for the most part, is more involved with helping out the police when they need it. Such things as neighborhood watches or an amber alert program within a community is a sure testament to the relationship with the community. The police have figured out that working with the community is an easier path to travel and they can get better results. There are all sorts of programs now where the police try to reach out to the people surrounding them. It is not uncommon for a police officer to be assigned to a high school or a high school program to help reassure the kids in the neighborhood and make them aware that the police are there to help make it a better and safer
The biggest issue that effects policing is technology. Technology is at a rise and growing at an incredible rate. Technology advancement gives criminals a whole new way or an easier way to commit crimes. Eventually technology is going to take away jobs from our police officers and other individuals working in law enforcement. We are no longer going to need police officers out on patrol monitoring traffic, we have high speed cameras to detect incident detection, and vehicle counting, traffic flow monitoring and even people who violate traffic laws like speeding, running red lights and stop signs.
The role the mass media plays in the public perception of Law Enforcement and the Criminal Justice System is potentially important in relation to the viewer’s attitude and beliefs. Does the general public support law enforcement or does the media create a negative perception of the police in the press and on network television? The CSI Effect has gained huge popularity among researchers, what is it; and how does it affects the public’s role in criminal proceedings? In relation to the mass media, how important of a role do common demographic variables such as race and age play a part in the public’s perception of law enforcement?
Police departments undergo an immense amount of scrutiny. Many members of society question their motives, if they are performing their jobs adequately, and if they are using police discretion appropriately. Over the years there have been many cases that have involved members of law enforcement or the entire police department, that have placed law enforcement in a negative light. This negative light is attention that neither society nor the police departments will benefit from. One major case that has been in the media is the case of Kelly Thomas. Kelly Thomas was beaten and eventually died from injuries he had sustained from local law enforcement. This case is a major case because it brings awareness to society about police overstepping their boundaries, the lack of training police officers receive with dealing with the mentally ill, and how the mentally ill are treated in the criminal justice system.
Policing is a job that is displayed in media daily through reality crime shows, the news, and dramatized Television, but what does a police man really do. I talked with a lifelong friend and thirty-one-year cop, Rene Calderon to figure out what being a police officer is truly about. As well as being a Sargent for the HPD airport division, Rene has five brothers that are all also police officers. All together the brothers have 200 combined years in police work under their belt. In our interview we discussed the pros and cons of policing, what the long-term policing career is like, and what true policing is versus the way the medias portrays it, and the future of polcing these main points helped me get a firm grasp on what policing is truly
Sir William Blackstone once said “Better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer”. Television shows exemplify a pretty good aspect of the issues that people face in the Criminal Justice field. Criminal justice is not just police officers, there are many more fields that a person can get into. Even though there are issues within this field, there are plenty of benefits in the field as well. There is more to criminal justice than what meets the eye. There are problematic issues, an abundance of different jobs in this field, and there are plenty of long-term and short-term benefits that come along with the badge.
Bite and hold or bark and hold? Law enforcement agencies across the country have tried to balance the ever explosive decision of using force on a suspect who flees. Continually battling public concerns that seem to favor the suspect over the officer, many departments have changed their policy on the canine units that they employ. K-9 officers are more than tools to their handlers, they are their companions, and partners. Now, groups like the ACLU have targeted the use of K-9’s in the apprehension of suspects and to prove their point they have even brought suit against the agencies who deploy the bite and hold method. They contend that this use of force causes permanent, sometimes irreparable, damage to the victims. In considering the use of force many law enforcement agencies have policies regarding the use of force and when K-9 handlers are allowed to release their partners to apprehend suspects. Under increasing pressure many agencies have redesigned their use of force continuums to accommodate less lethal forms of establishing control over the suspect. In departmental use of force continuums, where does the police dog rank? With the ability to bite with the force of up to 2000 pounds per square inch does that mean it is lethal?
Change can be scary for many people. However, change is essential for law enforcement agencies to adapt to the evolving world. RMTI understands that the world is changing and we are eager to not only assist in law enforcement’s adaptation but are anxious to be the helping hand for our future leaders. On November 10th, we are offering an online symposium in which many important aspects of law enforcement will be highlighted, leadership included. Register your agency today by navigating to the “Symposiums” tab at www.rmtiglobal.com. Inform your agency on subjects like recruiting and retaining officers, succession planning, and allow us to form today’s followers into tomorrow’s leaders.
In the US, the role of Law Enforcement is to “protect and serve.” Which while a great motto to use for public relations, it oversimplifies the role of law enforcement. The police are the executive power. They have power and they use violence. The government has invested in them the power to hurt and even kill people, should it be deemed necessary and we the general public have to trust them to use this power responsibly. They are supposed to always use our powers for good and only as much as is needed to get the job done, but everyone knows this isn't always the case.
The pros for keeping the sign up would be to deter “would be” burglars from attempting to burglarize the property. People would think first before they act on any evil intentions.
Law enforcement officials perceive due to the increase in the number of Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) and courtroom shows loosely based on reality, there is a phenomenon called “The CSI effect.” The CSI Effect describes an ideology where non-fiction CSI television shows crime solving methods are now the standard by which real ordinary citizens expect crimes to be solved. In this essay, I will focus on three perceived, yet not scientifically proven effects. The impact of law-oriented entertainment programming, such as Perry Mason, LA Law, and
The Criminal Justice System is made up of several different process law enforcement, judiciary, and corrections this system is where the accused individual are tried and punished for the crime they are charged with. The depiction of criminal justice system in throughout each process (police, courts, and correctional) has become ubiquitous on television today. Shows that give a visual of the arresting and investigation process (law enforcement) are the televisions shows “Cops” and “The First 48 Hours”. The show “Cops” is a television series that follows police officers, constables and sheriff deputies around during their patrol and other policing activity (Cops, n.d). Showing the officer enforcing the laws of the
