Surfing an Open Web
Tim Berners-Lee said “Freedom of connection with any application to any party is the fundamental social basis of the internet. And now, is the basis of the society built on the internet.” Net Neutrality has been around since the beginning of internet. It is the reason the internet is open and free for anyone to use without, blocking, degradation, and discrimination. It has been the main driving force for up and coming artists, new small businesses, and people with fresh and great ideas. It has made the internet effortless and accessible without charging outrageous fees for a faster lane or having to ask for permission to use visuals, video, or audio. It

Say you order something from Amazon which is a large company; they process all deliveries through an internet service provider, along with 3 other companies. Now net neutrality works by evenly distributing all the services at the same rate making it a fair yet competitive environment. If net neutrality was not in place then the bigger companies, which in this instance would be Amazon, could put more money into the system creating faster service to the consumers and knocking out the other competitors. Net neutrality shows that each business in not competing with one another, big or small, and has the same chance of growing and plunging forward and becoming successful. Net neutrality creates opportunities for people and is favored by many …show more content…
It has made it easier to upload their videos and audio for people to hear without having to pay to be noticed. Music artists, film-makers, dancers will have the ability to post their talents freely and share them to mass amounts of people thus creating a big audience. For example the band OK Go became one of the first bands to become famous via social media. They were able to have their video spread and accessed to and by millions of people. "…and we owe our livelihood in large part to out online success, a type of succeed that couldn't have been imagined a decade ago." (Kulash1) OK Go is all for the internet being open because they saw how much it affected their life and they want others to benefit from it like they did. There was a time where getting your hands on any special recording device was an issue but now we see that if you have access to a newer age computer you have to power to make music and videos and show them on any site. They can be sent all over the
The concept of net neutrality is the fact that all internet service providers, or ISPs, have to treat all data on the internet the same, without regard to content, platform, etc(Wikipedia). The main purpose of this law is to prevent ISPs from executing abusive business practices that harm education and promote censorship. Without net neutrality ISPs would have control over the internet and what the consumers see. What this means is that companies can pay ISPs to be part of their service, and the companies that can’t pay will be slowed down. There are no downsides to net neutrality to the consumer, however from a business point of view ISPs won’t be making as much money(Debate.org). However that downside is easily outweighed by the several harms
Net neutrality is an internet service provider (ISP) which requires treating all data equally. It is important to have net neutrality because rules and regulations have to be upheld. If there was no net neutrality, providers could do whatever they want because there would be no one consequences. Therefore, neutrality laws give businesses the chance to stand as equals. It affects companies and customers. In particular, when the customer pays for services such as T-Mobile, Bright House, and TECO they want fast and uninterrupted services as well as customer service ready to discuss concerns. Customers do not want to pay for services that do not deliver on its promise. Organizations have to make a profit to stay in business, and they need their
But what exactly is Net neutrality? Net neutrality means cable companies such as Time Warner Cable and Verizon cannot charge more for faster internet speeds. Which means everybody who uses the internet will have the same speed. Hence the word neutrality. Verizon communication sued the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) saying that they do not have jurisdiction over that subject and limiting speeds is a violation of the First Amendment. "The FCC says Net neutrality rules are designed to preserve the internet as an open platform enabling consumer Choice, freedom of expression, and end-user control, competition, and the freedom to innovate without permission." This case went to the US court of appeals for the DC circuit. The courts ruled in favor of a Verizon. The reasoning for the decision is that “FCC has no authority to apply common-carrier obligation like non-discrimination and no-blocking rules to broadband providers.” I agree with this decision. The reason is that the internet should not be like electricity. If you plug your phone into the wall to charge. It's going to have the same amount of current as someone else charging their phone. But what happens if I want to charge my phone faster? I can’t because electricity is neutral. But when I go on the internet and I see it is slow. What happens if I want to make it faster? With Net neutrality I could not make it faster. I want the option to make my internet faster. And what happens to large corporations where internet speed is essential to stay in business? The fact of the matter is that the FCC does not have jurisdiction over this matter. Net neutrality should never be passed. It will only hurt the consumer. In addition, the FCC approved of a $9.25 monthly charge to help low-income families connect to the internet. Three out of the five Commissioners voted for the subsidy plan. This approval is one part of the reform of the fund
Net Neutrality is the principle that Internet Service provider’s should treat all content on the internet equally. Most people in the United States of America want to keep net neutrality. However, the Federal Communications Commission’s chairman, Ajit Pai, wants to stop net neutrality, so many people are protesting to keep net neutrality. Net neutrality promotes innovation and allows freedom, but is seen as unnecessary by the Federal Communications Commission.
Most Americans today don’t even know what net neutrality is, let alone how it so greatly affects their life. Whenever you use the internet you are benefiting from net neutrality. Net neutrality is what allows us to visit any website at the maximum speed anytime with no slowdowns or interference by ISPs. This is one of the core ideas that internet was founded on. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) are the companies that are trying to restrict and monopolize the internet. The removal of net neutrality would allow ISPs greater control over what you can do, create and view on the internet. If ISPs have this ability, they could greatly influence people’s quality of life. The right to net neutrality is going to be addressed next year by the
The internet is a place of creativity and ambition. The internet allows people to connect with others through websites like Facebook and Twitter. The internet allows users to stream music from sites like Pandora and Spotify. Without net neutrality, the creation of these sites would be impossible.
“Net neutrality shackles the internet with rules and regulations designed for the bygone era of the black rotary phone rules that made sense in 1934 but not today”. This is a quote from Brian Paul who is a reporter from “The Mercury News” which is based in San Jose, California. Net Neutrality is the idea that all internet service providers should treat all lawful internet content equally and it is restricting the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of modern computing. Although, on the other side of the argument many people like Tim Berners-Lee who is known to be the creator of the world wide web say “Neutral networks are critical to ensuring fair, open competition in the content market and driving America's growth in the digital era”. It is
"Net neutrality is an issue that's been on the agenda in the U.S. for years but it actually affects people all over the world. The net neutrality is a set of rules that prohibits companies, organizations, corporations, from playing favorites or regulating the sites that how much traffic and fast traffic can flow to. Every site on internet is equal and no one can restrict access or slow down access to any particular site or service and puts everything on the internet on an equal playing field that everyone has access to the same internet speed, every site has access to the same users, we really can't restrict access to anything and when we say that they repeal net neutrality, it is essentially means that they are making it right for companies to say like well on the service that i'm going to block your access to this site or i am going to slow down the speed at which you can access a particular site or a particular service and you could
The article “Net neutrality is here. What it means for you” briefly describes what net neutrality is and the changes net neutrality has offered to many individuals. Net neutrality also known as network neutrality, means that many individuals are not restricted to having slower internet speeds or unauthorized access to certain applications, websites, or services meaning that the internet is open. The article describes the changes that net neutrality has brought. However, for the most part not a lot changed, many services that had been blocked before by large telephone and cable providers (ISPs) will now allow individuals to regain or gain access to blocked applications and services. Large internet services and websites like AOL, Facebook, Netflix,
As someone who has had some sort of web presence for over ten years , I am completely and unequivocally in favor of net neutrality. Google defines net neutrality as "the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet. " What net neutrality means to me, is that the content I have to share (however mundane it may be) has an equal opportunity of reaching any Internet user as any
Tim Berners-Lee said “Freedom of connection with any application to any party is the fundamental social basis of the internet. And now, is the basis of the society built on the internet.” Net Neutrality is the idea that Internet service providers shouldn’t block or deny access to certain websites or content but should allow access to all content by everyone. The major controversy with net neutrality is that FCC is putting regulations on internet service providers. The FCC is proposing to protect net neutrality by enforcing new rules on internet service providers under Title II of the communications act. The FCC would be given the power to prevent these providers from banning any legal service or website. To outlaw fees for faster service, to ban the impairing or degrading of internet traffic. Those who support net neutrality are major tech companies including Google, Facebook, Netflix, Mozilla, Etsy and Reddit. They argue that without strong regulation, cable companies could “pick the winners” online, providing better service for their own
Providing equal opportunity for people online and other ISP(Internet Service Provider) is important to maintain net neutrality. Giving people this equal opportunity on the internet provide a free- market environment (World Encyclopedia, The, 2001). If a business owner wanted to start a store on the internet, they would have access to the same resources, tactics, and skills to get the maximum revenue for their business. With net neutrality gone, the ISP could slow down certain websites and even block them. This will give them a disadvantage and would change the economic style of the internet with an authority figure having control of the information and businesses that have a choice to make them rich or poor. Net neutrality will give
Net Neutrality is a basic principle within the internet that basically keeps everything equal by not allowing governments or internet service providers (ISP) to charge us extra or treat sources, providers, content, or platforms differently. Net neutrality has been an issue in the United States that has been widely debated since the 1990’s (when the world wide web was created). Many large scale ISP’s within the United States claim to be for the idea of net neutrality however some people believe this not to be the case. Without net neutrality principles in place, ISP’s could control everything we do which could be used to block certain things making the ISPs able to charge us more for these services. The ability to make more money by charging
Unfortunately, the repealment of net neutrality impacts us, as the consumers, the most. Without net neutrality, all ISPs no longer have to adhere to the laws set in place, and the ISPs can manipulate the internet to their own benefit. For instance, your ISP would have free reign to to slow your access to the internet(2). Especially for broadband intensive websites, such as streaming sites like Netflix, the ISPs would slow them down immensely in order to minimize the cost of the ISPs accessing that data (3). Access to the site would be unbelievably slow, unless we pay a ransom to access a “fast lane”(2). As a result, consumers are left with two options, pay a fee for the same internet they once had, or comply with unnecessary wait times. Without
Net Neutrality also allows information and ideas to be spread to people. In the article Net Neutrality: Why Artists and Activists Can’t Afford to Lose It by W. Kamau Bell it states “When the activists Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors started using the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter to discuss the killing of the unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, it began trending worldwide, eventually anchoring the modern movement against police brutality against African-Americans” This is talking about the spread of ideas on the internet. Without open internet causes like #blacklivesmatter would not have been able to spread. There are many causes that began on the
