I have decided to pursue the career of a network system administrator or IT professional. Over the last ten years or so computers have become fundamental parts of everyday life, used for a variety of reasons at home, in the workplace, and at schools. Of course every computer user runs into obstacles from time to time, whether it is the blue screen of death, the forgotten password, or the loss of important data. The explosive use of computers has created a high demand for specialists to provide advice to users, as well as for day-to-day administration, maintenance, and support of computer systems and networks. Pryor to undertaking this activity I did not understand the basic skills required in order to make computer use easier. In the past I completed computer task based off of head knowledge and at times I would find myself completing my assignments in long periods of time. Though technology has improved I have become comfortable with old technology and have not tried to explore current updates until now. When presented with the opportunity to update my computer I would often not take advantage of the opportunity. This assignment allowed me to have a hands on experience that assisted me in learning the basic use of a computer.
Mary Doe, come here and see our new computer!” my mother exclaimed from her room. I raced to where she was, fueled by my youthful curiosity. When I entered the room, a strong euphoric feeling rushed over me: I owned my first computer. After my mother had taught me the simple basics of computers, I began playing on the computer each day, growing more knowledgeable. From that first monumental day, I had began to gain a true affinity for electronics and learning. This affinity has led me to pursue a career in the STEM field — a Computer and Information Systems Managers. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, “Computer and Information systems managers, often called information technology managers (IT managers or IT projects managers) plan, coordinate, and direct computer- related activities in an organization,” (Bureau of Labor Statistics). My objective is to achieve a senior-level Database Administrator position for a leading provider of technology services in support of the US government. After gaining ample experience, I plan to capitalize on my technical expertise and work as a freelance consultant. Economically speaking, technological advancement has been a major cause of job displacement, however, automated ‘machines’ require technical knowledge to design, develop, implement and maintain. Consequently, IT-related positions are still in high demand. The Database Administrator role includes the development and design of database strategies, system monitoring and improving database performance and capacity, and planning for future expansion requirements. Database Administrators often plan, co-ordinate and implement security measures to safeguard databases. In addition to completing my educational goals, I would supplement my knowledge with industry specific certifications that would illustrate my skills as a leading prospective candidate. This particular position utilizes my previous work experience and technical expertise while employing my greatest strengths. Although education and experience are key to being successful at your career, overall satisfaction and longevity are equally vital.
“They are responsible for LANs, WANs, network segments, and Internet and intranet systems. With the expansion of computer networks they are often able to telecommute from home. The education requirement for these workers is typically a bachelor’s degree but a professional certification may be adequate for some employers. “Experience with network security and maintenance is preferred.
