Despite all the bad publicity such as the survey which names Newark, New Jersey as the most unfriendliness city in the world, more than places like Islamabad, Pakistan; Oakland, CA; Luanda, Angola; and Kuwait City, Kuwait. In my opinion, Newark is a great place to live for many reasons that I will discuss later in this paper. However, the forty- six thousand readers of Conde Nast Travelers magazine who participated in the survey probably named Newark as the most unfriendliness place on the planet because of their experience they had while getting off the airplane at Newark Liberty International Airport. But if the survey was pertained to this specific area, then the magazine should have made it clearer because residents like me take offense to an accusation like this. It’s like what my mother always say “ One spoiled apple don’t ruin the whole bunch,” and that’s exactly what this article is doing stating that everyone in Newark are rude and unfriendly when it is not true. According to the article “Newark is best known for being the site of an airport near New York, and for many of our readers, that’s the only reason to stop there,” wrote the editors of Conde Nast Traveler owned by the Newhouse family which publishes The Star- Ledger. With the holiday season and the increase of violence in the city (exactly ninety-six murders) the survey actually appears to be true. But, I view this survey as a bias opinion/ assumption from people who just stepped off of an airplane to get
For those only weakly committed to city living, particularly middle-class people who have serious difficulty with social diversity and who have clear housing alternatives, the "problem-free" suburbs become tempting. After an incident such as a car break-in or a bicycle theft, a "last straw" can make them leave. (249)
Newark is the largest city in the U.S state of New Jersey. Newark is one of the most dangerous cities in New Jersey. Newark is one of the highest rated cities in the USA when it comes to crime. Newark has lot of crime that has been going around for centuries. The crime Rate is improving throughout the years but there are some actions that need to be taken to improve the life in Newark. Newark is one of those cities where people would second think if they should go there or not. Almost every single day there’s a crime that happens in Newark, as you’re reading this someone is probably getting killed, mugged, robbed, or rapped. The reasons for the crimes are because there are lots of gangs in Newark. Newark is one of the worst cities in the USA that has one of the highest crime rates, lot of gangs, murder, and shooting. Newark needs to focus on its education, police, and mayor on Newark.
Newark is the most populous city in the state of New Jersey, and one of the nation’s largest shipping hubs. It is the sixty-seventh most populous city in the country and has just over two hundred seventy-five thousand residents. This makes it the second most populated city in the New York metropolitan region, after New York City. It is the largest port on the Eastern Seaboard, location of several corporate headquarters, and several universities. It is a diverse city, made up of five wards containing many neighborhoods that vary greatly, from urban business and industrial districts, to quiet near-rural areas on the outskirts of the city.
However, the attitudes and mentalities of those “eyes on the street” directly affects their willingness to keep it safe. Undoubtedly, South Street Philadelphia is a well-populated area that generates hundreds of tourists every day, whether it be through the allure of the various shops or the dozens of restaurants and bars that reside there. The main downside to having these strangers present on the streets is the fact that they have virtually no ties to the area. Due to the fact that many of these visitors have little to no investment in the quality and safety of South Street, they play a seemingly small role in the safety of the sidewalk. Sure, they provide extra “eyes on the street,” but if those eyes have little reason to care about the street itself, how beneficial can they really be? Jacobs even states herself, “Bars, and indeed all commerce, have a bad name
Newark is a broken city, with years of neglect, corruption, and greed that have put generations of families in a cycle of poverty. The generations of poverty have festered in a city filled with crime and drugs. People can argue for years on how to approach and fix Newark's problems. Many can agree on the significant problems of Newark, but the problems of Newark are not something that can be fix overnight. It will take many years for Newark to recover. How does the Brick City get lifted out of poverty and crime? A good place to start is with education both at the student level and offering training programs for adults. The next step would be to create jobs beneficial to the people of Newark. What kind of jobs does Newark need to become a thriving
Last but not least, Crime will decrease in Newark, NJ by starting neighborhood watch programs. If residents are informed about neighborhood watch programs that will be anonymous then crime will also be less. If there was a program started that allowed residents
The city of Camden, New Jersey has been known as one of the greatest Industrial Powerhouses, and was one of the biggest Industrialization in America. Camden created some of the nation 's largest warships and helped start up the railroad industry. (City of Camden; Industrialization) These are just a couple of the many things that made Camden one of the most thriving cities in the United States back in the day. But, all things must come to an end as the saying goes, Camden that once was a successful industrial thriving city is now one of the worst areas to live in America today. Camden is ranked second on the list in the United States as one of the worst cities to live in. Camden has a violent crime rate of 87.02% and you have 1 in 11 chances of being a victim. Camden has been plagued by so many problems it is now known for its violence, drugs a failing economy, and many more. So, where did Camden go wrong? Will it ever be the city it once was again?
On a date to tour the city, George tells Cocoa that “Most people are confined to ghettos by economic circumstances…. the young and talented confine themselves by choice” (Naylor 65). The city is an often cruel, unfair place where “there was little enough of [kindness]…to kill off in one shot” (Naylor 59). It is also sometimes an unfriendly place; the city has a kind of cold, informal aura about it. Take for example, the description Cocoa uses to describe the waitress service at the restaurant: “especially when the check came glued to the bottom of your dessert plate…watching a big greasy thumbprint spread slowly over the Thank You printed on the back” (Naylor 13). The unfriendliness is enough for a Southern girl like Cocoa to turn her back on the city and not give it a chance, as so many others had.
New York City’s population is a little over 8.3 million people. 8.3 million people are spread out among five boroughs and each have their own set routine. Each one of those 8.3 million see New York in a different way becuase “You start building your private New York the first time you lay eyes on it” (“City Limits” 4). Some people are like Colson Whitehead who “was born here and thus ruined for anywhere else” (“City Limits” 3). Others may have “moved here a couple years ago for a job. Maybe [they] came here for school” (“City Limits” 3). Different reasons have brought these people together. They are grouped as New Yorkers, but many times, living in New York is their only bond. With on going changes and never ending commotion, it is hard to
The community I have chosen for this paper is The South ward of Newark, New Jersey where the hospital which I work is located. Newark is an urban community consists of primarily of African American and Hispanic population. The South Ward of Newark and contains 17 public schools, five daycare centers, three branch libraries, one police precinct, and three fire houses (City of Newark New Jersey, 2013). The city’s property and violet crime levels tend to be higher than New Jersey’s average level (Newark, NJ Profile, 2013). Observation of this community through a window
“people around here are willing to help their neighbors, this a close knit neighborhood, people in this neighborhood can be trusted, people in the neighborhood generally don’t get along with each other and people in this neighborhood don’t share the same values” (Sampson et al., 1997, 920).
Throughout the article, Wolfe made his opinion clear. He believes everything New Yorkers go through is unhealthy and inhumane. Humans were compared to rats using the overcrowding, the ways of life, and the filth as examples. From the adrenaline rushes and car horns to helicopter noises and constant overcrowding, New York City is a constant stress causing environment.
After reading the article, there are three main points that we should discuss revolving around Camden crime rate. Camden is known for having the leading part one offenses which is murder topping off the charts compared to other New Jersey cities. The first point, that will be reviewed is the high crime rates that have been displayed in Camden for numerous years which has lead there chief to believe in the philosophy of community policing. Secondly, not all residents have seen the decrease of crime in their area such as the Community Baptist Church. The final point that will be discussed is why Camden crime rate has not turned around and why we should include the public on crime awareness in their area.
I have lived in Charlotte, North Carolina since I moved from Raleigh at the age of two. For most of my life Charlotte has been a peaceful and loving environment filled with increasing job opportunities. However, the recent events that have come crashing over Charlotte have overshadowed all of the great things that I have to love as child and now young adult. I am sure you are familiar with the tragic shooting of Keith Lamont Scott and the side effects that followed. Not only was my great city put into the limelight for a negative reason, it was also flipped onto its head leaving many of people confused as to what the future may hold. Now, people see Charlotte as an example of what not to be; however, I believe that Charlotte has the ability
This blasé outlook can often be associated with other behaviors that manifest in an urban setting. Take New York City for example. New Yorkers have a reputation of being rude,
