Throughout the course of my life I have been surrounded by the same type: people who see themselves in the same farm town, going to a school close to home, and getting a safe, steady job. I, on the other hand, have always yearned for a future apart from that. My plan has always been to make a change in this world. Whether that is helping to fight the threat that is global warming, finding a solution to the clean water crisis, or simply raising money to help those in need, I do not yet know. I do know that this University will provide me with not only the best research facilities, but also the opportunities to create relationships with people in all of these fields. Working at non-profit organization requires an employee to understand their company’s mission and values. At Easter Seals Southern California (History, 2015) the agency’s mission is to provide exceptional services to all people with disabilities or other special needs and their families and to ensure that they have an equal opportunity to live, learn, work and play in their communities (History, 2015). ESSC provides a number of services and the department I work in is Autism Services, which provides therapy, treatment, and training to individuals affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Our department focuses on providing therapies that are proven to be effective in increasing skills of individuals with ASD and similar disabilities.

Working for a nonprofit agency most of my professional career the article provided was dead on about the pros and cons of nonprofit agencies. Most have entry level jobs that require us to do an enormous amount of work with very little pay. Although there are certain tax breaks that come with nonprofits agency as our book and the article indicated, the company has to work very hard to obtain and keep the status (Weinbach & Taylor, 2015). However, I would spend my entire career working with a nonprofit company despite the many challenges I feel the rewards are greater. Credibility could be built by first of all, drafting a with business planning. The business plan would state clearly whether it would be a profit oriented business or for non-profit oriented. If the business is profit driving then, the profit sharing formula and management position has to be decided at the start of the business. This is to avoid conflict from arising in future due to the success or failure of the business. If the business is going to be non-profit focused, decision has to be made whether, the business is going to move towards profit making in future or it is going to stay the same. The non-profit line of work is a career field that does not draw much interest due to the lack of financial stability but it is a field that is in dire need of workers. There are people who are dependent on non-profit organizations, of those people women and children rely heavily on non-profit organizations. The Carousel Center and Rape Crisis Center are two non-profit organizations, local to Wilmington, that helps foster and defend victims of assault—especially sexual assault.

What are key skills needed to be a leader in a non-profit agency or public sector?

I live in Chesapeake, Virginia (Eastern Time Zone) and I am a retired federal employee. In my previous career, I worked in logistics and finance. After retirement, I decided to pursue my passion for helping others. I did a lot of volunteer work for non-profit organizations and found there was a real need for people with business and financial experience. So, I used my skills to help a lot of disadvantaged people. This resulted in me seeking additional education to become an Executive Director of a non-profit organization. I am pursuing a degree in Business Administration, Non-Profit Management.

Since a non-profit organization provides community services without monetary profit, the external environmental conditions that exist outside of the non-profit significantly influence its growth and survival. Specifically, economical elements such as disposal income levels, unemployment trends, taxation rules, inflation, and cost of living may impact the likelihood of obtaining new donors or continuing donations from existing donors. In an economic climate of decreasing disposable income may result in decreased donations. Furthermore, increasing unemployment rates may increase the need for public assistance wherein the non-profit organization may find it difficult to obtain increased funding to provide their philanthropic services.

The diversity of nonprofit organizations, services provided and the problems faced shows that nonprofits require leadership with an in-depth understanding of the multifaceted nonprofit landscape. Understanding the culture of nonprofit work is also crucial and much easier to understand once you have been through a nonprofit management program. My career interests lead me towards an avocation of a deeper knowledge of strategic management/planning, legal structure and standards, increase my skills in quantitative analysis of policy, financial governance and developing fundraising strategies. I remember the moment when I executed what I love to do. Until then, I had always been the late bloomer, the searcher. When I come to think of it, one of my passions had always been right in front of my eyes, just waiting to be grasped. Yet, I never believed that what I already knew about myself was enough to find my future. I was in dogged pursuit of an elusive goal, on the lookout for anything relating to my passion, hunting, scratching the dirt off all things that could be potential futures for my passion of presenting to an audience. But nothing came of it until I stopped looking.
