Our trip to North Kingstown brought us throughout various parts of the town, such as Quonsset point, Wickford, and the Gilbert Stuart Museum. As a whole, the demographics of North Kingstown are very similar to Cumberland, with high populations of Irish, English, and Italians. Throughout the town, these nationalities reflect in both popular and folk culture. Irish descendants make up 25.8% of North Kingstown’s population, reflected in local restaraunts such as Fat Belly’s pub, Roman Catholic Churches such as Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, and names such as Hamilton Elementary school. This became a haven for local artists after the founding of the Wickford Art Assossciation (in North Kingstown). Throughout the town, in restaraunts and stores, artwork created by local artists can be found. The main road through wickford village, Main Street, is full of historic buildings. Nowadays, these buildings are home to many local businesses, showing how pop culture and folk culture interact. Though the buildings are an example of the folk culture brought over by early settlers, the modern businesses in them demonstrate folk culture. In addition to local pop culture, national and international companies also have locations in North Kingstown. They represent uniform landscape, as these stores are comparable to ones found elsewhere, providing consumers-both local and tourists-a sense of farmiliarity. For example, chains such as McDonalds and Starbucks can be found in North Kingtown, but almost identical restaraunts can also be found all over the world. Overall both pop and folk culture influence can be found throughout North Kingstown. The great majority of European descendants and the town’s proximity to the ocean reflect in local food, architecture, religion, and business
