Roles and Statuses
Since I have started studying sociology I have been able to constantly compare it to my life and how it relates to the struggles I am currently facing. Out of all the chapters I have studied in this class this semester, chapter five stuck with me the most. Chapter five focuses on social positions and our interactions with other people along with the different types of statuses a person can behold or gain and the roles that come along with them. I have learned about all of the different sets of statuses, for example, the statuses one can achieve, the ones someone can be ascribed, and/or the master status that someone can be known for most. With those

Achieved status is a status that is assigned to a person who works towards becoming that status. In my life I have worked towards becoming a student at OSU- Newark, becoming a friend to numerous people, becoming a girlfriend, and becoming an employee at Dollar General. Ascribed status is a status that people are born with such as for me in particular, I am born as a female, a daughter, a granddaughter, a niece, a cousin, and a sister. Depending on the situation any of these statuses could be considered my master status. At school my master status is student whereas at work my master status is employee. With all these statuses come various roles. Roles are expected behaviors based on your status. In my life I struggle with not only role strain but also role conflict. Role strain is when a person has multiple roles that conflict with each other for a single status whereas role conflict is when a person has multiple roles that conflict for multiple statuses. I have found that some of my expected roles can make it very difficult to fulfil other expected roles. Such as, my role as a student consists of attending classes, doing homework, and studying but, as an employee I am also expected to have open availability, not to call off, and over all put work before anything else. Since I have become a student it has been hard to find a way to make time for all of the things that are expected of me. Sociology has given me the tools to decide how to handle conflicting situations and
Every profession has roles, responsibilities and boundaries; governed by copious legislation and directed through company policies/ procedures. These ensure objectives are met and identified persons can be made accountable for their functions. In the teaching/ learning sector however, roles can be blurred and legislation somewhat confusing, suggested by Holtrop (1997) “Obviously teachers wear many hats; friend, counsellor, judge, mentor, hundreds of roles and different roles for different classes, students and extracurricular duties”. Nonetheless, the protection and safety of individuals and groups is the fundamental principle, and can be broken down into three key areas;
In Anthony’s story, he clears lays out his perception of being at one level of social class and then forced into lesser social class because of his parent’s divorce. It was a real-life style adjustment and change for Anthony (Thomas & Schwarzbaum, 2006).
Even though they are two different aspects of American society, social and economic classes are very interlaced. Social classification determines where an individual stands in the eyes of society, and whether they are socially accepted and embraced by American culture. A majority of the time, a person’s tier in the system is mainly determined by where they stand in the economic classification. Economic standing depicts where an individual is placed based on their financial success, and their access to the luxuries money can buy. Both have different levels of highs and
In the short story “Initiation” by Sylvia Plath, Millicent Arnold is a narcissistic teenager undergoing her initiation into the most prestige social group at Lansing High. Despite being aware of the risk at losing her best friend, Tracy, Millicent eagerly seeks the opportunity to be part of a close-knit group and as a result, she is mistreated and forced to conform to the group’s narrow standards. Plath explains how being part of a social group does not necessarily help one grow individually, but rather assimilates them into what is portrayed as esteemed social status. As Millicent goes through the downgrading initiation process, she discovers the value of friendship and realizes that being associated with a certain group will not help her achieve confidence in her true self.
In life, there are many times where an individual may feel alone. Personally, this past week can attest to that notion. Moving into a college dorm, saying goodbye to my loved ones, and taking on a new chapter in my life, have all been accompanied by a new set of emotions that I have never felt before: homesickness, freedom, peer-pressure. However, looking around everyone seems happy, and it feels as if I am trapped in a space that no one else appears to be in. But, internally they may be battling the same struggles that I am. That is what can be drawn from “The Wisdom of Sociology: Sam Richards at TedxLacador,” the idea that behind the facade, our personal struggles are all connected.
Growing up, almost every parent will tell you, “you can be anything you set your mind to!” or “the possibilities are endless”. But from an early childhood my parents were creating an opportunity structure for my life. Through my 20 years, how I was taught, the places I went to, the people I interacted with and the implications of society and societal norms followed me. As with many other families, my parents focused on setting me up for the best possible future. But little did they know, they were contributing to a society where some people are allotted more privileges and opportunities than others. I will attempt to deconstruct this complex social construction by looking at gender, social class, family influences, race, and socialization; which will be discussed in greater detail further along. When analyzing sociological concepts like gender, social class, and race sociologists use a “sociological lens”. Using a sociological lens will allow me to take the experiences I had and look at them on a broader cultural level. Ultimately sociologists use sociological lenses to better understand how personal experiences not only impact 1 person but how they can be applied in a broader context, allowing individuals to relate to others in society who may have had similar experiences.
The purpose of this book is to show the challenges of being stuck in a social class limbo. This book shows how there is a constant struggle between where you were, where you are, and where you are going. Alfredo Lubrano tells his own story and the story of others like him. Through his various interviews, he was able to show the hardships people faced while climbing the social ladder.
I am now convinced that I belong to the defining of the Sociological Perspective. The Sociological Perspective is the systematic study of human social life, groups, and societies. This concept is very relatable to the movie “The Matrix” and it also applies to my life enormously. As a young woman there are many obligations I feel like I have to follow just because society expects me to. One of the obvious ones is chores around the house. I am the one that is expected to cook and clean. One will never find me out late at night because form a young age I learned that that is not what girls do. I go to work every day just as everyone else does. I am going to college to get a better job and to add some status to my life. In high school I participated in many clubs, one of them being Student Council. I joined that particular club for the simple reason that everyone else did because that’s where ‘everyone else was’. To continue, I participated in every sport just like an athlete should. I went to football games to support my school and cheer for my team alongside with all my friend and classmates. The list could go on and
I am writing in regards to your book, The Outsiders. The world often categorizes people according to their wealth, appearance, and popularity. We tend to think of the upper class as professional, powerful, and problem free, while the lower class is looked at as problem prone, uneducated, and criminals, but after reading your book my perspective changed. I realized that problems do not have a specific category, and being superior in society doesn’t bring you true happiness. Instead our value can be determined by how we face the challenges we are given, and the people around us.

My name is Phat Lam and I came from Saigon City, Vietnam. I have immigrated to California with my parent for almost three years and I am now living with them. I didn 't understand how much my background and life chances are extraordinarily affected by numerous complex sociological factors before I am taking Sociology. I understand now that using my sociological imagination permits me to interface my own encounters, practices, and behaviors to the bigger social structure. A portion of the sociological topics that show in my life are the means by which ethnocentrism, social mobility, Cooley’s looking-glass self theory, minority group,peer group, and social institution have assumed a part in adding to my sociological autobiography.
Class, race, and gender organize society as a whole and create a variety of contexts for family living through their unequal distribution of social opportunities. Gender, like class and
The master status is “…a status that has special importance for social identity, often shaping a person’s entire life” (Macionis, 2013, p. 97). The master status that I most identify with as having the biggest impact in my social identity is always being physically connected with my future wife Kaisha as allowed by society either by holding hands, or other innocent ways of physically being together, and the title of this particular description of a master status is, “one who is a part of that couple that never lets go” (as labeled by others). There are many role sets that are attached to my master status such as playing the loving partner role, future husband role, caring friend role, and protective partner role. Role sets
Society is complex and diverse. In such a diverse society, individuals may have different life experiences to one another. While some individuals have positive viewpoints in the society, others may differ in an negative aspect. In this socio-autobiography, I argue that the society is an nightmare as humans develop a whole range of complex sociological concepts. The following paragraphs will explain the struggle of my life experiences being influenced by using the concepts of gender, race and ethnicity and power.
The social issue relates to inequalities in men and women. To be specific, Men and women are not equal when it comes to many things, such as gender roles in households, gender bias in the workplace, and gender inequality in politics. The main article I will be addressing is Gender, Interpersonal Power, and Social Influence, By Linda L. Carli (Vol. 55, No. 1, 1999, pp. 81–99, 2001). The sociological question in this article is whether men possess higher level of power than women. The issue is that men and women are not equal, even if it comes to working the same job, doing the same exact thing, having earned the same degree. This topic is important because it is something that should be continuously addressed. That
