After the first world war the leaders of europe came together to discuss the boundaries of europe. British rule decided to separate ireland into two sides. North Ireland was created when the british government of Ireland Act in 1920 divided Ireland into two areas; the Irish Free State and the Northern Ireland Roman Catholics, who made up around one-third of the population of Northern Ireland, were largely opposed to the separation. The British took over , but only after many revolts and riots against them from the people of ireland. In 1969 the IRA (Irish Republican Army) was formed. They were a Catholic Irish nationalist group that used guerrilla tactics like bombings and assassinations to oppose British rule and oppression in Ireland. Their main goal was to fight the british that took over their home. The IRA would Fight using guerilla and terrorist tactics including bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, punishment beatings, extortion, smuggling, and robberies. But over time the IRA became more of a dangerous militia then patriots defending their home.

Al Qaeda is most known for their terrorist attacks. They have had six major attacks and four of them were towards America to seek revenge. The first terrorist attack was on December 29, 1992. They detonated two bombs in Aden, Yemen at the Movenpick Hotel and Goldmohur Hotel in hope of eliminating the American soldiers that were on their way to Somalia. Fortunately, no Americans were killed but some were injured.

Boko Haram are motivated by a Jihadist version of Islam and is believed to be believers of the one true interpretation of the (Brinkel & Ait-Hida, 2012, p. 16). Their ultimate goal to create a true Islamic state in Nigeria directly associated with Sharia law. (Chothia, 2015, p. 5). The group has maintained their secrecy and the authorities have yet to be captured by law enforcement. Al-Qaeda is a Sunni sunni Islamistislamist organization that was founded by Osama bin Laden. They have made an impact on many parts of the world. Impacts that would cause casualties that is. Just three organizations Al-Qaeda is tied to are the Haqqani, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and the Taliban. Although Al-Qaeda has few agents left in Afghanistan they still managed and manage to cause devastating acts of violence. One of the ways they were and still are able to make such an impact is by working with other organizations with similar views for their ideal future.

The Al-Qaeda is the deadliest terrorist group in the world responsible for the worst attacks across the globe. The group is Wahhabi organization that was founded by Osama Bin Laden alongside Abdullah Azzam and other influential militants. When Osama Bin Laden died, it was a big drawback to the group, however, was a big setback for the prominent terrorist group, it still managed to maintain its grounds and grow stronger over the years (Bergen, 2011). Al-Qaeda is responsible for the April 2007 Ashoura massacre and also contributed to the September 11th attack on American soil. Al-Qaeda has very many training grounds spread across the globe with the largest one been the Khalden training camp located in Shorabak in Pakistan that was apparently destroyed by the American military. The core lesson taught at the training camps is the interpretation of the Muslim Sharia law. The Al-Qaeda group has one mission, vision, and objective, to form global jihad to unite all Muslims across the globe (Shahzad, 2011). The Al-Qaeda group has a characteristic way of carrying its attacks via the use suicide bombers who are sent to carry out suicide missions. Al-Qaeda also owns numerous aircraft such as Boeing 727s as well as multiple executive jets.

Al-Qaeda, which means “The Base” is a terrorist group based on extremist Islamic military. Al-Qaeda is an International Terrorist Organization and goal of this group is to make violence, damaged, and abolish no Islamic governments. The group was made by Osama Bin Laden in the late 1980s to throw the Soviets away from Afghanistan. In this mission, Al-Qaeda got a success and they were able to kick out all the Soviets from Afghanistan. This victory builds up a new confidence in this group and they started to grow up rapidly. Since the Al-Qaeda was made it was operating from Afghanistan but in 1991 Al-Qaeda transfer their headquarters to Afghanistan, and Peshawar Pakistan. “Al-Qaeda dedicated itself to further opposing non-Islamic governments in this region with force and violence.

The disorder in Somalia that has built up for many years has contributed to the growth of a terrorist group bent on global jihad, al-Shabaab (Ibrahim, 2010). Al-Shabaab is an Islamist group that has been involved in conflict with the Somalian government, and is considered one of the major threats to Somalia’s prospects for peace (Mueller, 2016).

For the past seven years innocence have been injured, killed, or brutally tortured by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram. They have lost their homes and precious possessions due to a cruel, selfish satisfaction of this organization. Boko Haram members believe that these “brutal penalties” is just an ordinary way to express their culture. Although Nigeria came to a conclusion that these terrorists had given up, it only took five months later to realize it was not the end. Nigeria’s strategies had gotten them nowhere and only led them back to where they started.

Have you ever heard of Al-Qaeda? You might not have heard that name but you have probably heard of Osama Bin Laden. He is the one of the heads of this “Al-Qaeda”. This radical religious based group was only able to flourish and gain a multitude of followers due to the regional population’s lack of basic education.

Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen, more commonly known as Al-Shabaab is a Somali jihadist terrorist group. The group started as the militant wing of the Somali Council of Islamic Court that took control over Somalia’s southern area in late 2006. The group was soon overcome by Ethiopian and Somali forces, but continued with its violence. Al-Shabaab recruited regional sub-clans and their militias. This group pledged allegiance to the well known Islamic militant organization Al-Qaeda in the year 2012.

According to an article from FP (Foreignpolicy.com) written by Rosa Brooks, “In 2014, terrorist attacks increased 39 percent over the previous year, while the number of fatalities caused by terrorist attacks went up 83 percent”. Not only has the numbers of death increased, but the targets have mainly been civilians, rather than government officials. HAMAS (Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyya) is the Arabic word for Zeal and also known as Islamic Resistance Movement. It is a notorious terrorist organization in the Middle East and George Bush stated that “Hamas is one of the deadliest terror organizations in the world today” (Jensen, p.1, 2009).

International Terrorist groups have evolved in tactics, inhumanity, and deviance, one of the up and coming groups that have carried out alike threats and attacks is the Somali terrorist organization Al Shabaab. This paper will cover an organization an organizational overview and accounts of their strategies, tactics. The conclusion of this paper will provide will provide an assessment of the current situation and threat level while providing recommendations for counter terrorism policies in the us.
