The current nursing practice needs to be changed because patients do not have the same learning style and the literacy level of the patient population will vary as well. Not having patient-specific education available to them will hinder their learning as well as decrease their satisfaction. Offering the educational material in different ways for our patients is a must. Providing education to patients in a manner that is meaningful, in simple terms, and at a reading level that suits them will help patients retain the knowledge longer. By giving patients a large amount of material at one time is not an effective way of learning. A study was done at a 1,300 bed urban facility over a 13-week period. The purpose of the study was to describe the causes of inpatient falls in hospitals (Hitcho, et al., 2004). All falls were reported except falls in the psychiatry service and during physical therapy sessions. During the 13-week period, a total of 183 patients at an average age of 63.4 years old fell. Of the total number of falls 79% were unassisted, 85% happened in the patient room, 59% occurred during the evening or overnight shift, 19% were while walking, and 50% were elimination related (p. 732). In this study it was identified that many patients did not use their call bell before getting up because they did not believe they needed assistance. It was stated that, “perhaps patients need to be better educated on the effects that a new environment, decreased activity, medications, tests, and treatments can have on patients’ energy and ability to ambulate safely” (p. 737). The findings of this study showed that falls not only happen in the elderly, but in the younger population as well. Patients that fall in hospitals are often unaided and are due to elimination needs. To prevent falls and decrease injury rates, more studies need to be done.
The nursing practise has continually evolved and can be described as autonomous due to the significant involvement of nurses in patient care. This then necessitates critical reflection as a way to continually develop and improve the nursing practise. The Gibbs' model, one of the reflection models, assists nurses in complying to the codes and guidelines of nursing practice. For example, developing action plans, evaluating patient outcomes, and thinking critically. This essay will describe an event involving nurses and explain the feelings it evoked. It will also provide an evaluation of the positives and negatives, analysis and enhancement of learning, and an action plan.
Nursing is a dynamic profession and life long learning is essential for nurses to stay current with the increased complexity of the healthcare needs of today and into the future. In other words, the needs of our patients are changing, as we must change in order to be prepared to better serve that need.
The need for continuing education in nursing has been accentuated in response to rapidly changing health care environment. Expanding knowledge by pursuing higher education allows nurses to enlarge one’s practice. Furthermore, higher education in nursing has been shown that a nurse’s level of education can become a critical factor to the patient-centered quality of care. This essay describes increased demand for higher education in nursing and emphasizes the necessity of continuing education to provide optimum patient care in various setting.
In the healthcare facility there are many things that can benefit from change. Bedside rounding with the inclusion of the entire care team would be a beneficial change to any healthcare facility. By doing bedside rounding it promotes patient and family involvement in the exchange of information and planning of their care. This also allows for the interdisciplinary team to be completely involved rather than picking up bits and pieces of information throughout the day from multiple different people. This is also a great opportunity for the patient and their family to ask questions with the entire care team available for answers.
Nursing care is focused on the assessment, nursing diagnoses, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patients. This nursing process can also be implemented in aspects outside of nursing and on the nursing field as a collective group. The nursing role is evolving, following the process the outcomes have to be evaluated and put into perspective. Research is being completed the conclusions are all the same, the higher education of nursing care the better the patient outcomes.
It has grown from a non-educated nurse to one that has to be even more educated to keep up with the fast changing times with diverse topics and culture differences. It is a constant challenge for physicians and nurses to do their best in the fast changing nursing field. As nurses, we have to be constantly upgrading our education. We can’t expect anything to always be the same and to never change. Register nurses today work as a team, they work every day with physicians, pharmacists, speech and occupational therapists, just to name a few. Since nurses are primarily responsible for direct patient care and coordination, I believe that they should not be these educated on the health care
Due to innovations in technological tools and information management systems while collaborating and coordinating care with other health professionals, nurses have been called upon by the IOM committee to acquire higher levels of education to help them meet the needs of the population. The educational systems to prepare nurses for the work force today, needs to be geared towards community settings like primary care, public health, and long-term care. Nursing curricula in schools, need to be reviewed, updated, and adaptive enough in science, technology, research, and rich fundamental concepts that will enhance decision making skills, involving dynamic clinical situations in all settings to meet the ever changing needs in health care according to the IOM committee.
Attaining a high level of education will improve the healthcare system only if nurses are fully utilizing their knowledge and abilities. Many times nurses face challenges in exercising their abilities and knowledge due to institutional policies or government regulations,
contemplates his/ her views, beliefs, values ideologies and opinions as well as those of others in healthcare.
Nursing education has progressed throughout history from one of uneducated lay persons to the current standards we know today. As the career has progressed it has become apparent that there is a need for a skilled labor forced trained to deal with the sick and dying, “the provision of nursing care by American women…demonstrated the effectiveness of skilled nursing on improving outcomes for sick and injured soldiers” (Creasia & Friberg, 2011, p. 4). However, as the career progresses so does the need for more specialized training amongst nurses to help them deal with the changing atmosphere of patient care. The future
As a nurse part of our responsibility is to use the nursing process and one of our biggest roles is to provide patient education. The nursing process consists of five steps: assess, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. A step in this process is being used for every time we interact with our patients whether it is for skin integrity issues or patient education. As a nurse, we are constantly providing patient education even if it is just as simple as describing to the patient what we are about to do to them and our rational. Major socioeconomic changes created this drive to make transformations in nursing and institutions. These institutions are the ones that are responsible for educating the next generation of nurses, such as West Coast University.
