Nutrition is perhaps the most important factor, which affects the health of a person. The body needs a balanced amount of nutrients and energy for its survival and is essential for good health. A balanced diet is necessary and it takes into account six different food components, which are proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, fibers and water. The needs may depend on your gender, your age, your life type, you health conditions and so on. Intakes of energy and nutrients below or in excess of needs for a prolonged period can adversely affect health. Malnutrition is a term that covers problems of both under nutrition and over nutrition. The word hunger can mean the painful sensation caused by the want of food, the want or scarcity of food in a country or a strong desire or craving. In relation to the term World Hunger, the word refers to the want or scarcity of food in a country. In areas of the world, including the United States, where hunger is an issue, malnourishment becomes a very serious concern. There are two main types of malnutrition, Protein- energy malnutrition (PEM) and micronutrient deficiency. While both types of malnutrition are dangerous, PEM is the most important and most notable form of the disease and is eminently fatal. Quite a few trace elements or micronutrients, vitamins and minerals are important for health. Iron, Vitamin A, Iodine, and Zinc are some of the nutrients people that are malnourished need.

Despite the vast research on nutrition and health, malnutrition is still a major fatality in this present day. Policymakers, social scientist and medical experts have expressed alarm about the growing problem. While most agree that the issue deserves attention, consensus dissolves around how to respond and resolve the problem. Malnourishment continues to be a primary health liability in developing nations such as Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. It is globally the most significant risk factor for illness and death, predominantly with hundreds of millions of pregnant women
Food is defined as any nutritional substance that humans or animals eat or drink in order to maintain healthy life and growth. There are many different types of food and drink that both animals and humans consume. The food we eat determines the lifestyle we have.
A person’s diet is the food they regularly consume, for example a high fibre diet contains a lot of fruit and vegetables. A nutrient is anything that nourishes a human or animal for example iron is a nutrient if someone is a vegetarian they don’t get a lot of iron so they have to take iron supplement tablets. A meal is a fairly large portion of food that is served and eaten for example a roast dinner which contains vegetables, meat and potatoes. A snack is a small amount of food eaten in between meals for example a sandwich. Malnutrition is caused by people having to many or too little nutrients, this can cause poor wound healing, fatigue and organ failure. There are many nutrients we eat within our foods, these are vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and protein. Malnutrition is when an individual is not getting enough nutrients into the bod, this means their body will not function properly this can be dangerous as your immune system could stop working or shut down which means individuals will be open to more cold, flu’s, infections etc. Malnutrition can also include under nutrition and over nutrition.
A good and healthy nutrition is essential for your health. However, a survey that was conducted in 2007 proves that the Australian adolescents consume less fruit and the intake of the saturated fat and the sugars have increased in consumption (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2015). Some of the studies have shown that adolescents who frequently eat with at least one family member has a greater chance of having better food and also have a good nutritional intake. It is very evident that having the family meal a priority and by creating a positive family meal atmosphere, associates with a decreased rate of disordered eating behaviours and eating disorders in adolescents (DAA, 2016). Research shows that the Australians are eating even less fruit and vegetables before all the fast food companies started growing. The data received by the Bureau of Statistics show that the teenagers are the main charge in unhealthy eating dominated by the fast food. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2015).
Just as nutrition can have drastic effects on one’s physical health, nutrition can affect one’s mental health as well. The most common mental disorders that are prevalent in numerous countries are depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The dietary pattern of the general population in many countries reflect that they are often deficient in many nutrients, especially essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Deficiency in these vitamins can lead to depression.
The key determinants of health are frequently defined as the most influential factors within a person’s health. They are categorized into immediate, social, economic, and political factors. Even lacking one vitamin from your diet is considered malnutrition. Malnutrition can also be a result of Crohn's disease, cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, or persistent diarrhea or vomiting. Having anorexia is also a cause of malnutrition because of the restrictive calorie intake. Drug addiction or being an alcoholic can affect the body’s ability to absorb the nutrients which will cause malnutrition as well. It is possible to be obese and have malnutrition if they are not getting enough nutrients from all the food they take in.
My grandmother has her type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for almost 30 years. My grandmother herself and my families believe that all my grandmother’s adversities are contributed solely to the affection of the illness and no other patient’s lifestyle, the influence from other members’ opinion and action, and the incomplete education from a professional person. In the Iran Red Crescent Medical Journal, authors Fatemeh Rahmati-Najarkolaei, Sedigheh Sadat Tavafian, Mohammed Gholami Fesharaki and Mohammed Reza Jafari studied factors predicting nutrition and physical activity behaviors with the concern of cardiovascular disease in Tehran University students. This study aims to identify the important predictors of nutrition and physical activity in relation to cardiovascular disease in students of Tehran University. (Rahmati-Najarkolaei, Tavafian, Fesharaki, & Jafari 2014). Participants, Tehran University students studying in the majors of humanities, basic sciences, and technical-engineering in different grades of MS, MSC, and PhD through the ages of 18 to 55, were given self-administered questionnaires that consisted of four sections. The first section evaluated demographic characteristics like age, gender, height, weight, level of education and information sources. The second assessed their knowledge about causes, diagnosis, risk factors, and the importance of healthy diet and physical activity in cardiovascular disease prevention. The third section addressed the Health Belief model and asked about perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action. Lastly, the fourth section was about nutrition and physical behavior (Rahmati-Najarkolaei, 2014).
