Everyone strives to fulfill the promises that were assigned to the American people through the establishment of this country. This includes the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In order to protect these significant rights, most civilians are ignited to work as diligently as possible, even if it means experiencing the daunting effects of war. As stated by Martin E.P. Seligman, the American psychologist and author of A balanced psychology and a full life, “Many very distressed people were left in the wake of World War II, and the high incidence of mental disorders had become a pressing and immediate problem” (Seligman 1379). Positive psychologist were now opted to survey these patients who were damaged by the poignant events of war and “make relatively untroubled people happier” (Seligman 1379). In order to seize even a minuscule moment of bliss, some people can turn to the wrong source of satisfaction. As stated by Dr. Susan David, a profound psychologist at Harvard Medical School who wrote Don’t Worry, Be Gloomy: Negative Feelings Have Benefits Too, “An excess of freewheeling giddiness and a relative absence of more sober emotions can even be a marker for mania, a dangerous symptom of psychological illness (2016).” Individuals may confide in drugs, excessive spending, and even sexual intercourse to convey a happy facade. This prolonged cheerful exterior is damaging because they are distancing themselves from authenticity. The work of the sampling tools become undependable when producing credible information.
