Language is one of the major elements of culture and members of a society generally share a common language, which facilitates day -to- day exchanges with others - Richard T. Schaefer “Elements of Culture,” Sociology in Modules, 3rd edition (2016). A common language is prevalent in most developed countries, but this is not the case in the United States. I believe that every society should have a common force that unifies and fosters cooperation among its’ citizens.
Making English the official language of the United States would not only foster unity but would create opportunities for more immigrant citizens’ economic and political participation; as seen in the video by Univision, “should English be the official language of the United States?” , Alejandrina Cabrera was disqualified from running for office in San Luis, Arizona, City Council due to low English proficiency. Also, if English is declared as the official language, non- English speaking immigrants would have to learn it; this would foster effective communication and understanding, thereby enabling them to adapt to their new society. The adoption of the English language would also open immigrants to more opportunities in areas of employment, education, as well as political participation; just as in the case of Alejandrina Cabrera in San Luis, Arizona.
Supporters of English as the official language of the United States believe that the legislation would protect democracy by encouraging unity and political stability. This is on the basis that bilingualism prevents Americans from becoming unified under the bond of a common
