This class has really opened my eyes to the world around me. Diversity is something I never really understood why it was so important. Growing up in a population of almost all whites made me never really question why diversity was important or even in some cases needed. That is where this class has helped me realize that. I have learned through stories in the book and presentations given in the class how important diversity is. One of example of how serious diversity is taken is how the Olympics value diversity. I did a project on the 2008 Beijing summer Olympics. One thing that the Olympics value is how do these sites for the Olympics value diversity. I have grown up around people who do this all of the time and I have even found myself doing this at times as well. This may be the biggest takeaway that I have from this class. That before I really make an opinion on something whether it be a social, political, or diversity issue that I need to first be aware of what is going on a listen to all of the facts before making a opinion. This can work for just about anything, even when forming an opinion on a person as well. I didn’t go to a specific speaker, but I went to something the Identities project put on instead. The name of the event was “Physical and Invisible Disabilities: Stories of Stigma, Stereotypes, and Support.” This was very informative and talked mainly about people who have disabilities. They talked about the number of people who have a disability on campus at Viterbo along with some examples of these disabilities. These disabilities can range from physical disabilities to mental health problems. The specifics that they talked about were cerebral palsy, reading disabilities, ADHD, ADD, and
