Olympic Value Of Diversity Essay

I learned some important things from this course that I will allow to stick with me no matter my profession. Diversity is something I will always have to deal with regardless if it is race, gender, or gender orientation. Importantly this course has allowed me to grow as an individual and has shown me that it is okay to learn about other races and their background. Not only has it allowed me to be acceptable of everyone in fact, it has allowed me to be less judgmental amongst others.

The concept of diversity has allowed me to learn about other identities and the importance of representation. My experiences and exposure on campus have introduced me to diverse perspectives, religions, sexualities, and cultural members of our community. When America was founded, it was established on freedom and equality for all people. At first it was just religious freedom, but eventually freedom of speech, press, petition, and more. In time, America began to be known as a “melting pot” of cultures as more and more people came because they wanted this freedom; the more people who came though, the more problems America had. There were too many cultural discrepancies between people, and ultimately America, the country based on freedom and equality, faced challenges concerning diversity.

I was very excited when I saw this essay prompt because diversity is actually one of the main criteria that drew me into NC State. All throughout my schooling life, for as long as I can remember, I never attended any schools that were diverse. There was always one extremely predominant race or gender, and it’s something that truly disturbed me. The Olympic games were an athletic competition help in Greece around every four years from 776 B.C.E. In 776 B.C.E, the first olympics were held in Athens where many competitors clashed during the sporting events. The olympics then stopped in 393 C.E. due to Theodosius I’s orders on stopping the olympic events. Later during 1896, the modern olympics began to take place. The olympics were different from the ancient olympics in that the competition was shaped due to social, political, and economic reasons.

This summer I was challenged to take on a volunteer opportunity at a facility with children to learn about and experience encounters on diversity. I started volunteering with Mrs. Rodriguez at her home daycare center “Severina Rodriguez Family Home Day Care” on May 2, 2015. This institution’s mission is “Where your Child is our Priority.” I originally picked this daycare center because when I was a toddler I was a part of this institution. I wanted to give back to those who took care of me when my parents could not. This home daycare is located in Hialeah, a primarily Hispanic portion of Miami. I came into this class not so naïve as some students may have been. I’ve grown up going to public schools, living in a diverse small town, and having interracial relationships in my family. Although I was informed on some forms of racism and the fact that racism does in fact still exist, I didn’t realize it was extensive as it really is. All the readings, videos, and lectures have directly related back to the purpose of the course. As a whole, I feel like this class has grown in knowledge not only about how racism affects people, but how to change and make a difference. This class has informed me a lot more about the unfortunately thriving acts of racism in the United States.

To realize that we are all on a very diverse campus even with a small population is important because we in a way get a little taste of everything from everyone. To know that Washburn is a diverse campus is important to me because that means there is always going to be something that I can learn about someone else each and everyday. Honestly, before this assignment, I was not too interested in the topic of diversity simply because I did not think too much about it. Afterwards seeing what diversity was all about it really is interesting to know that everyone lives different but we all live in the same world.

Diversity and social justice is not something that I was familiar with prior taking this course, nor did I ever have enough knowledge of the deep and complicated social and economic structure in this county. It has been an eye opener course, I gained a lot of familiarity on the issues of race, culture and the other elements that but this county together. My prior awareness about the issues of sexism, ableism, and racism was limited and mostly were self-taught.

The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The world is full of different people and ethnicity, race, creative individuals. Each race has issues to deal with rather it be prejudice and racism. Also during my time in this course I have learned a great deal about myself and I learned how to show more respect to other cultures, I already understood some of the cultures and races we studied this course but to get a better understanding and having to additional research really gave me an open mind and point of view what everyone deals with.

This paper will analyze the influence of culture on attitudes, values, perception, human behavior, and interpersonal relations. The discriminatory factors that promote societal, political, socioeconomic, and spiritual oppression of culturally diverse populations will be described within this paper. Racial and cultural diversity within non-native English-speaking communities will be examined. Furthermore, this paper will also analyze how current research may positively impact the delivery of public safety and enhance the evaluation of information and resources. Lastly the chosen articles used for this paper will be evaluated on their reliability and credibility.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the diverse experiences that I have had in my personal and professional life. Fortunately, I have had a large mix of diverse friends and experiences in my life. This paper will discuss those diversities as well as the plan to expand on my current knowledge.

Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and religious peoples.

By the year 2050, nonwhites will represent close to half of the U.S. population, according to the U.S. Census Bureau projections. By 2005, the ethnic minority share of the workforce is expected to grow to 28 percent, up from 18 percent in 1980 and 22 percent in 1990. Although the African American population is now the largest minority group, the Hispanic and Asian populations are growing much faster. In 1994, the African American population was estimated to be 33 million, or 12.7 percent of the total population, up from 11.7 percent in 1980.
