This picture was taken in a truancy court posted by the Denver Post in Oct 19, 2010. This is 15-year old Louis Pollack- Trujillo and his grandmother Maria Trujillo. Louis’ attorney, Robert Lubowitz, accompanies them (“Truancy as a last resort”).
Many will argue that students are just too long in school when they can make better use of their time doing other activities (Tucker). While these might be true, it is absurd to argue with the fact that the state of Colorado and The Board of Education in Denver have agreed that being in school for 1,056 hours a year is vital for a student’s education. Instead of fighting the law, students can learn to use that extra time to keep on pursuing their education. It is essential to know that he mind never stops growing.
Students will also argue that most of what’s thought in a classroom they can teach themselves. This is true in many cases and for that reason; intelligent students like so should turn to an online school. Online schools are more affordable, have increasing numbers of resources, and have flexible schedules (Lips, 2010). Flexible schedules in specifically will prevent an outstanding student from becoming a truant student to begin with.

Obtaining an education is essential in today’s society. Most students who attend school on a regular basis usually succeed in life. On the other hand, many students fail to attend school every day which can lead to problems in schools. However, some students have acceptable reasons for dropping out. As a result, a student’s punctuality can ultimately alter his or her education. On that note, dropping out of high school can affect an individual in many ways throughout the years. Schools are facing challenges dealing with high dropout rates, high rates of truancy, and low graduation rates because students are failing to attend school.
Student attendance is important to reaching key academic milestones, graduating from high school and having access to opportunities as adults. Studies show that students who are chronically absent (miss 18 days or more during the school year for any reason) are less likely to graduate from high school. SPS Housing and Education Manager Kathlyn Paananen speaks to the significance of caring adults in a student’s life as having a proven, positive impact on student success, “Best practices to address attendance include having a supportive community that positively reinforce regular school attendance!”
Not every student is able to receive 100% attendance throughout the year. In “’A’ Is For Absent,” Chris Piper argues that students’ absences should not be reflected in their final grades. Piper writes about his experience with what he considers an unfair attendance policy. He did well on tests and projects, however, due to his numerous absences he received a low final grade. He writes that unlike in a job, where attendance is mandatory, in college it’s a choice of a paying student. Piper also writes that when standardized test scores are evaluated, attendance of preparatory courses is not considered towards those scores. He urges instructors to put aside the reasons they have for implementing attendance policies and grade students solely on performance. Although Piper presents a good written argument, I believe that his reasons are not valid. Students who do not consistently attend classes should not be graded in the same way as those who do because it creates a fair environment, it increases learning, and most importantly, it builds discipline.
Students nowdays have many reasons to skip school or college. For example, they might want to go out with friends, go shopping or simply stay home on their cell phone and checking Instagram. However, all students must understand that attendance is very important for all of us – the students because good attendance equals good grades.

With the increasing rate of online education, many people do not see the problem of this type of learning, since some schools already have these programs available. If a student enrolls in relatively demanding online classes, the results remain nearly the same as those of a student attending a traditional school. Basing an argument on only a few weeks of experience does not make a person qualified to have trustworthy opinion on a specific topic. Social problems, time management issues and the lack of curiosity all diminish if the student attends the correct online schooling program. One example of how online schools can improve student learning was shown in a study by the SRI international department of education. The researcher Steve Lohr conducted a study on mostly college students from the years 1996 to 2008. The researcher performed a quantitative analysis of online versus classroom performance for the same courses. The results for students taking online courses showed that they ranked in the 59th percentile compared to students who took the same courses in traditional schools ranked in the 50th percentile. These results showed that there was a 9 percent difference in the tested performance of college students which indicated that students learn more effectively in online schools versus traditional schools.
