Project Managers (PM) must first plan out the project and then monitor and control the execution of the program work. There is a tendency for projects to short change the planning process. This is a common mistake. The time spent properly planning will result in reduced cost and duration, and increased quality over the life of the project. Using tried and true best practices for a PM will provide assurance that the program /project will be beneficial and successful.

Management is defined as the controlling and making decisions. Thus, “project management is “the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements” (Kloppenborg, 2015, p.4).

The Project Management Institute, Inc. defines project management as “the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet the requirements of a particular project” (Metafuse, 2015). Projects are completed by a group of people that will continue to develop as the project progresses. The most well known model to describe this process identifies five different stages that lead a team towards success.

It has been recognized over the last 30 years that project management is an efficient tool to handle novel or complex activities which is called a project (Munns and Bjeirmi 1996).
