The Case for Faith, was written by Lee Strobel who at the time was an outspoken atheist. Strobel set out on a mission to disprove the Christian faith. Along the way, as he gathered information he was slowly convinced that there was truth to the religion. In result of his findings Strobel published three books to help explain his findings. In this book he discusses objections that arise in the minds of believers. Strobel discusses eight different objection, thoroughly explains them, and provides deep information to help resolve these objections. Some of the issues that he touched on are tilled; Since Evil and Suffering Exist, A Loving God Cannot, A Loving God Would Never Torture People in Hell, and I Still Have Doubts, So I Can't Be a Christian. Within each obligation Strobel includes Bible verses and professional explanations on objection at hand. The most beneficial sections are those where he gives simple analogies that can benefit anybody no matter where one is in the faith journey. The three parts that benefited me the most are; Since Miracles Contradict Science, They Cannot be True, It's Offensive to Claim Jesus is the Only Way to God, and Church History is Littered with Oppression and Violence. While there is so much information in each …show more content…
Most notable, Objection number eight is far shorter than most other sections. I feel more detail about the types of doubt one might experience would add great value to section. Many people lack confidence when it come to expressing their faith, and this would have been a perfect section to discuss this. The second problem is in the way that the book is organized. It is written and organised like a textbook and I found it hard to focus and read at times. I do not know how the book could be organized differently and not take away from the information that is given throughout the
The argument being put forth by Drange specifically attacks the God of Evangelical biblical Christianity, an important distinction for the argument itself. The Encyclopedia Britannica illuminates evangelicalism as a Christian protestant movement which emphasizes conversion and the foundational nature of the Bible as the only basis for faith, declaring the Bible as “inerrant.” (Brittanica, par.1)
to be an exhaustive one, but rather indicatory, giving us some of the main subjects that are found all through the Bible.
1- In Reasons to believe, Scott Hahn, discussed in the second part of the book, the views of the protesters and opponents of Christianity, which is in my opinion, the strongest part, because it depends on the argument and logical reasons. Also, try to persuade to make the Catholic faith in the best image.
In this first objection of Case for Faith by Lee Strobel, it was very interesting to see the detailed contrast in a Christian view verses an Atheist’s. This whole chapter was very intriguing, the way the discussions played out and what each point leaded to. Out of all of it, I really caught onto when Keeft stated the three attributes of God; God is all powerful, God is all knowing, and God is all good. Throughout the chapter, Keeft made it very clear that he was defending the fact that there is a God. He used numerous different ways of explaining his point of the matter. I noticed that while doing that, revealing the attributes of who God is, really tied it all together.
Over the past semester we have reviewed and learned about so many ideas, beliefs, and concepts. The topics that really stood out were Faith vs. Fantasy, Exclusivism vs. Inclusivism, and the faith foundations of a Christ-centered Theist. These concepts have made me reflect back on my own beliefs and why I started to believe in God and the Bible in the first place. These three notions have induced me to believe and build a stronger trust and relationship with God.
Of all that I believe, of all the I think about the world: how much of it is actually true? What’s more: how do I know? Human beings have asked themselves these critical throughout history, and in countless areas of thought. =========================The problem of reason versus faith is, at root, a problem of how to answer these questions. The problem of faith and reason is, therefore, epistemological: a problem of how we know what we claim to know. =========================
In Christianity, faith and reason come together in the following ways: without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb. 11:6), reason can show us that God exists, but not produce faith in God, because faith involves an act of the will, and reason cannot force the will to believe. Some truths cannot be discovered by reason, but must be revealed. However, these truths can be shown to be logical and reasonable once they have been revealed to us, because God is the author of both reason and faith, there need not be a conflict between them. Andreas J. Kostenberger argues, “Scripture’s self-attestation primary leads inexorably to the conclusion that Scripture
B. To make critics on this book, the best criteria I would adopt is love. It is not only a virtue but in fact it is the commandment that Jesus has given us to obey (Jn 13:34). As Augustine emphasized in the teaching of catechism, “Love is the End”, is the utmost important element to teach in the catechism.
Faith, a word that has a different meaning to every individual that walks this Earth, cannot be so easily defined. Faith, when talking about it in the religious sense, makes it even that much harder to understand. Everyone believes in something, and each of those beliefs have an enormous effect on how they live their lives. Gerald O’ Collins, a Jesuit Priest, states that within the Christian faith, lies two components: Fides Quae and Fides Qua. Fides Quae is the faith which is believed, or the content of that faith. Fides Qua is the individuals own personal commitment to God. Throughout this paper I will demonstrate faith using The Compendium, and A New World of Faith to show how a good understanding of faith can reveal the truth from
Entering the ancient discussion about the tension between faith and reason is not an easy task. Of course, when engaging in tensions it is always important to define terms. For the sake of consistency I will refer to Oxford’s online dictionary for both the definition of faith, as well as reason. Faith is “complete trust or confidence in someone or something.” Reason is “a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event.” These are the definitions that will be used throughout this paper. From the above definitions, the conclusion that is logically deduced is that reason precedes faith.
The amount of information that exists that directly contradicts the belief in religion is astounding. I have no desire to accumulate the amount of information and force feed it into one argument. Not only would it take a great amount of energy, but it would be so long that the thrust of the argument would be lost. The best arguments are the shortest, they are concise and effective in that they say very much with very little.
In the style of Anna Carter Florence, I usually prefer to sit with the text and see where it takes me, which is what I did with this. As I read through it, I made a list of some questions that came to mind. Those included:
6. What one thing impacted you the most in terms of what the worship leader did to tie the service into biblical teaching and biblical experience?
It was the night before the last day of our Faith & Reason class and I had previously been tasked with finding a specific topic to argue for. I decided to cover the idea of my own faith and how it copes with the multiple viewpoints varying from atheists, theists, and the Bible as well as the opinions on reason and the very existence of God. Within this paper, I will explain why my faith is eternal and no matter how much evidence there is against the existence of God, my conviction that there is a supreme being who oversees all that goes on in this world, will continue to avail.
To have an open mind when you are learning about something that goes against your beliefs is extremely hard. The three chapters assigned was no different. I had the hardest time trying to comprehend what I was reading, even after reading it over and over. It wasn’t easy and I still don’t know if I fully understand what I have read.
