Under the British constitution, parliament is sovereign. This means, amongst other things, that Parliament has a monopoly on making and amending laws. The British constitution, and the three functions of government which operate it often falls short of creating a definitive separation. Separation of powers refers to the idea that the major institutions of government should function independent of each other, in a utopian world there should aim to be a balance between the Crown and Parliament. In practice however, separation between the executive and legislature is near enough non-existent, an example being that government is made up almost entirely of MPs. Contrast this with the USA where no member of Obama’s government is equally a member of congress. However, the USA does have a codified constitution, a constitution written to delegate a clear separation of power. As we are well aware the UK doesn’t have such a constitution, the rules that

Without the City Council, Sterling would not have much. They are a great percentage of why Sterling can function the way it does. In addition, they are always searching for more incentives and other projects in increase the standing of Sterling. They are always looking for more positive things to implement in Sterling, and although there may not be much to do, they are trying to make it so there is more (i.e. Pedal the Plains, heritage festivals, etc.). Protecting the citizens of the United States from all threats foreign and domestic is one of the primary responsibilities of the Federal Government. These threats include not only military and criminal activity but also the monetary system, as well as both manmade and natural disasters. We refer to this as our national security. Because of this, the Federal Government maintains the various branches of the military and multiple law enforcement angencies to ensure that protection. In this digital age, cyberattacks are an ever increasing threat to national security. These attacks not only target government agencies but also private contractors that do business with the federal government as well.

A government’s sovereignty can be called into question if it’s power is not centrally located. The Articles of Confederation created a weak government and gave no control over the states. The Constitution distributed power to where they needed to be. There are a lot of good reasons why the authors of the United States Constitution decided to give more power to the federal government rather than the state governments. Our government needed to be reformed after the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution helped set up our government how it should have been. The Federalist and Anti-federalist’s opinions were clearly stated during the time of the Constitution being drafted. It took a lot of hard work and dedication to get our government to where it is now.

The government consists of parliament which is broken into two houses, the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Great Britain has an unwritten constitution, which is states who has the power in government and can make laws. One of these laws is the rule of law. The rule of law states that no citizens can be punished for any actions not forbidden by law. This law is enforced in Great Britain but there are exceptions. The Queen for example is not totally subjected to the law as well as parliament because they can unmake and amend any law they wish. Great Britain further protects its citizens by having a Humans Right Laws. This was passed in 1998 and ensures that all citizens have the right to a fair trial.

In a strong, operative government, it is common that a supreme political authority or sovereignty is in control. A government can be overseen by either a single authority figure or by a group of them. These individuals are usually appointed by the people in the community that they govern over. Also, someone can be born into a leading position if they are born within a royal household name. These dignitaries decide what to do by observing and listening to the desires of the people. Basically, the government works together with their community to decide and implement rules that better the society as a whole. For example, in the United States, there are three main branches of government. These include the Legislative, Executive and Judicial branches

The government is supporting people to use community and neighbourhood rights so that people can live in the environment as they want. To support people who want to use this right, different bodies were created, which are: local councils, parish council, neighbourhood forum, local planning authorities and other local public bodies.

The Local Government Act of 1989 tells of the official roles of local government of a community. This act states the elected councils have the right to the powers that are considered to ensure peace, order and good government of each municipal district. This act gives local government a vast range of power. An important concept mentioned in the statement above is that only elected councils have the right to show power within a community. This same act states that “It is necessary to ensure that the Councilors who comprise each Council are democratically elected by persons entitled to vote at municipal elections and that the council is responsible and accountable to the local community.” This statement shows the overall role of local government in a community.
