The most exciting time to live in Hercules is mid-October. This is the time when one watches the changing leaves and trudges home through the piles that build up at the sidewalk. The pumpkin patches are full and colds are starting to take waves of students by the dozen. Yet, however dreary Hercules seems to students as they sit through boring lectures of the Pythagorean Theorem and Quadratic Formula, today is the beginning of an era. Today is the day when MASS comes to spread the enjoyment of math and science to the local elementary school. “But guys, science is super boring! You just poke dead frogs and stuff,” is what an uninformed person might say, someone who obviously doesn’t know about our members’ passion for numbers and explosions. …show more content…
The loud buzz of the intercom whines throughout the school, announcing the event of the day, at least in our eyes. “... like math? Don’t forget to attend the Fall Outreach at Lupine Hills Elementary School!” and the silent apprehension of the day is met with cheers from the “nerds” in the classroom. We call out one of the perks of volunteering in outreaches: “C’mon guys, you get community service hours!” Flash-forward to later in the evening. We begin with “spookifying” the room, placing pumpkins that were carved with an array of faces, from the kawaii to the frightening. The elementary school principal loves it. The students eyes are caught in the heat of a dollar bill that seems to be burning, but is left untouched by the flames. A pair to the left have their hands sticky with the scientific phenomenon of “oobleck”, smashing cornstarch and cleaning fluid into heavy balls and then letting it drip like honey through their fingers. Across the room are children covering their ears and giggling at the squeaky noises dry ice makes when in contact with metal. Even more are ogling at the cookies and cream ice cream made from the dry ice, the show stopper of the
The story “Pumpkins” was first published in the journal “Western Humanities Review”. This journal accepts online submissions only, and charge a small submission fee. Flash fictions must be at 1,000 words or less, but authors can submit multiple submissions, as
First Presbyterian of New Orleans is a church that helps the homeless by doing different fundraisers. “Program of HOPE” is one of the best event they do every Wednesday in the morning. “Pumpkin Patch” is another fundraiser that support “Program of HOPE.” “Pumpkin Patch” is event that happens ever yearly in all October month. The main boss of the fundraiser is unknown because everyone works as a team, working in different position. Cheryl Roberts is the Secretary/Administrative Assistant at First Presbyterian of New Orleans and she also the in charge of the volunteers’ sign in. When Mrs. Cheryl have the volunteer’s days, she tells Kristy Ruppel and Leslie Schutt (parent volunteers), who monitor all volunteers outside. Kristy’s husband, Terry Ruppel comes out to the Pumpkin Patch and by helping getting rid of the bad pumpkin to the trash or to keep a look out because we stay out until sunset. When Mrs. Kristy or Mrs. Leslie can’t make it to the day, Mrs. Tracy Helms-Capasso comes too.
There were many important people, aircraft, and developments, which greatly contributed to aviation development, which ultimately impacted the World. Out of many aviation developments, I will write about an aircraft I take pleasure in seeing and hearing, the C-130 Hercules. I consider this aircraft has made a significant impact in the aviation industry, most in the dependability of the airframe and its illustrious design. Today, this aircraft is used for many organizations such as Military Ops, firefighting, and search and rescue. The military is the primary user of this aircraft, for it uses it for many tactical operations. But what makes this aircraft so grand? The ability to land on short runways and the ability to fly slow with load,
“Appearances deceive so you never let yourself be guided by how others see each other.” What this myth theme is doing is just judging a book by its cover. Hercules had accidentally mistaken Chiron for one of the vengative centaurs and it lead Chiron to his end of life.
It was a frigid Fall day, with kids raking up the warm colored leaves into piles that seemed high enough to climb then proceeding to destroy those piles by jumping into them. There was one kid named Nate who didn’t partake in the repeated destruction of leaf piles; he was much more interested in carving pumpkins. It was his favorite thing to do during Fall; but, neither his friends or family enjoyed touching the disgusting, gooey insides of the pumpkins, so they refused to make jack-o-lanterns with him. While on the way to buy some pumpkins to buy, Nate saw a flyer for a pumpkin carving contest. He was enthralled with the idea of a whole contest being dedicated to see who is the best at making jack-o-lanterns. This idea of a contest excited
Chino Hills High school recently participated in the two-day long "Every 15 Minutes" presentation on March 15th and 16th. Starting on Wednesday, all Junior and Senior Huskies were sent out to the parking lot during their 3rd period where they sat on bleachers facing Rincon Rd. Set up in the middle of the road were four of our very own Husky students staged in a head on collision car crash. Behind the staged crash were 15 students dressed in black t-shirts with their faces painted white. Next to them were two other students dressed up as the "Grim Reaper." The presentation started with a pre-recorded voice on the speaker acting out a phone call with 911, explaining the car crash that happened on Rincon Rd. Within a couple of minutes, police
The constellation I have chosen is Hercules. The reason I have chosen him is because, Hercules signals strength and will. Which are two things I think everyone should have. Another reason is because, he was one of the original 48 constellations found by one of my favorite astronomers, Ptolemy. Today it remains as one of the 88 most common ones. It is also the fifth largest of all the major constellations.
Dynastes Hercules is one of the largest species of beetles on earth. They can be found in the jungles of south Africa. They are the largest and most know beetles out there. They say there are 13 know species of hercules in the jungle. The Dynastes Hercules are known to be the strongest beetle out there. The Dynastes Hercules is an omnivore and is on a diet. they can carry up to 850 times the accurate weight of them. Most of their home lands have been lost due to deforestation and other problems.
On October 23rd, I attended an academic event, on the Kennesaw State campus, called Spooky Math. The event was located outside the Math and Statistics building, near the visitors’ parking lot and Clendenin Building. Spooky Math was intended to involve students in the math department in a fun and interactive way. This was achieved by incorporating a Halloween theme to the event. Students and faculty members dressed up in creepy costumes and many brought carved pumpkins that resembled math equations. Students solved challenging math equations and voted on the pumpkins in order to win prizes. In the process of doing all of these activities, we got the chance to meet many faculty members that are involved in the math department. Spooky Math also
When Hercules returned to King Eurystheus palace after completing the 12th laborer, he was quickly assigned another task. “Fetch me the silver egg of the tusked bird that lives in the forest of Drimos,” commanded King Eurystheus. This was a very dangerous task that no man had ever succeeded in and Hera knew that. In order to get the egg, Hercules had to run a long distance to the forest. Then, Hercules would have to climb an enormous tree that was about three hundred feet tall. Hera hoped that even if Hercules managed to climb the tree, he would have trouble getting past the mother of the eggs. The Tusk birds were vicious creatures that had two gigantic tusks that could pierce through steel and they would do anything to protect their young. But then again, Hercules wasn’t an ordinary man. He was a mighty hero who was strong as an ox and quick-witted.
The Tower of Hercules has served as a lighthouse and landmark at the entrance of La Coruña harbour in north-western Spain since the late 1st century A.D. when the Romans built the Farum Brigantium. The Tower, built on a 57 metre high rock, rises a further 55 metres, of which 34 metres correspond to the Roman masonry and 21 meters to the restoration directed by architect Eustaquio Giannini in the 18th century, who augmented the Roman core with two octagonal forms. Immediately adjacent to the base of the Tower, is a small rectangular Roman building. The site also features a sculpture park, the Monte dos Bicos rock carvings from the Iron Age and a Muslim cemetery. The Roman foundations of the building were revealed in excavations conducted in the 1990s. Many legends from the Middle Ages
Values or tradition: the importance of both of these is debatable. In the myth “Heraclês”, it tends to stick with the Greek culture, which is dated. This culture tends to have lesser equality for women, all about who’s the best of the best, and being straightforward about things. In the movie Hercules, they are much more modern and stick to a more Americanized culture. The myth tends to show more traditional beliefs, while the movie shows more values. Women’s rights, comedic relief, and having an escape goat are some things that this movie displays, which are different from the myth.
Halloween is one of the most celebrated and the most marketed holidays in America; therefore, Americans buys costumes, decorations, and confectioneries which one can’t afford in war zone countries. In Halloween, children and teenagers get dressed up in their costumes and go from “house to house, walking along pathways and pressing doorbells.” When the door opens, children and teenagers would scream “trick-or-treat” and they receive candies, chocolates, and other confectioneries from their neighbours. This tradition has increasingly become more popular and sensational as more people decorated their house by stringing “rubber bats in windows,” and “turning off lights for effect.”
One beautiful late summer day, I was at my cousin’s house. We were both 10 years-old so we often roamed our countrified neighborhood together. We’d ride bikes up and down the road, explore the woods behind our houses and go swimming in the local swimming hole; affectionately called the Cold Hole by the locals. However, this day, we were at her house enjoying the temperate weather and glasses of chilled sweet tea while waiting for dinnertime.
At the end of the month, the library celebrated Halloween in fashion. All of the staff, including the volunteers there that day, dressed up and prepared for the kids who were coming in to go trick-or-treating. I was overjoyed to be a part of this wonderful holiday, who doesn’t love dressing up. I took this chance to show off my nerdy-ness and dressed as Princess
