Overpopulation of the Human Race

In recent years, Earth’s issues have become increasingly politicized, publicized, and economically important. When you examine how the environment affects us and how we affect it, it’s easy to see that overpopulation is one of earths most pressing environmental issues.

While there are plenty of infants being born every single day, do you ever wonder how the world will continue to sustain the growing population? The population of the world is continuing to grow at a dangerously, increasing rate. There are already at least 6.5 billion people on Earth. According to, Overpopulation ‘is main threat to planet’,

Population Growth is an issue that exists in today’s world that needs to be confronted before it becomes out of hand. The population itself has reached overwhelming numbers making it a problem that could turn to be dangerous. The amount of humans that the earth can support or the carrying capacity is slowly rising but at a much slower rate than the population growth rate. The increasing growth rate has its negative effects environmentally, agriculturally, socially, and economically and also has its positive effects nationally, and economically. The cause of human overpopulation is birth rates. The high amounts of birth rates are causing overpopulation to grow each year. Research shows in the year 2030, the population is expected to reach 8.5 billion people and 9.7 billion people in the year 2050. Developing countries is straining the already scarce resources. Intensive agriculture practices damage the environment through the use of chemical fertilizer, pesticides, and insecticides. As the population expands further, many natural resources such as fossil fuels, water, and forests continue to plummet. Lessening population will definitely solve many problems such as poverty, species becoming extinct, food shortages, water and air pollution, and even lower crime rate. High birth rates can be solved by spreading awareness, educate people about overpopulation, and increasing accessibility to birth control.

Thesis: The topic of human population growth is an important issue due to its impacts upon people in developing countries, economics, religion, food production, and the environment; without any limitations, population growth can lead to negative consequences, such as famine and environmental destruction, or even positive outcomes, such as potential economic growth.

The indefinite growth of the human population, has monumental impacts on the natural environment, not only in the UK, but around the globe. Architecturally, the entire process of designing and constructing a building, both domestic and not, can lead to the rapid exhaustion of natural resources across the planet. Building with environmental design strategies in mind not only combats the impact we as humans have on the natural environment, but also has considerable economic benefits, due to lower running costs of buildings and advanced occupant productivity. There are also many social benefits, such as improved air quality which resultantly leads too enhanced health of a buildings occupants.

No matter how many people do claim overpopulation is not a relevant issue, it very much is because of the simple fact that starvation and pollution are very real and existing issues that are ultimately offset by overpopulation. In an article titled “Overpopulation Is Not the Problem,” author Erle C. Ellis uses the analogy “Like bacteria in a petri dish, our exploding numbers are reaching the limits of a finite planet, with dire consequences,” to argue that overpopulation is not a problem by stating the opposing claim. “We are nothing like bacteria in a petri dish,” Mr. Ellis solemnly asserts, “...these claims demonstrate a profound misunderstanding of the ecology of human systems. Overpopulation is one of the biggest concerns of humanity’s. Overpopulation is a drain on natural resources, living space, opportunity, and the world at large. Mother nature cannot hope to provide enough sustenance for the land. Overpopulation is about us human, we are the smartest species on this planet after all; we make all the decision on this planet. At this world we don't play by our own rules, we play with by the rule that Mother Nature has created for all the species on the planet so we are all equal.

Throughout the last few hundred years, humans have built a foundation. Compared to all of the other animal species on Earth, humans are the most intelligent. We have built houses everywhere, developed a system to sustain ourselves, and now inhabit almost every piece of land on earth. Humans are smart, strong, and know how to fend for themselves. But, humans have a tendency to take it too far, and we have already done so. There have been numerous advancements over the past few hundred years which could ultimately lead to the downfall of the human race. The main issue is overpopulation due to the advancements in technology and general knowledge. The statistics from an article by Kenneth Smail show that “In the year 1900, there were almost 2 billion humans living on Earth. Throughout the 1960’s, the baby boom, there were 3 billion humans on Earth. Today in 2016, there are just over 7 billion humans living on Earth.” Currently, we have taken up just over half of all available land on this planet, and with increased amounts of people having kids, our population will only increase. Overpopulation is becoming a serious problem all around the world, especially in countries such as China and India. There are many global problems associated with overpopulation that are becoming more and more prevalent, which will all have dangerous effects on the foundation that humans have

“Overpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of Earth. Overpopulation is caused by number of factors. Reduced mortality rate, better medical facilities, depletion of precious resources are few of the causes which results in overpopulation.” In today’s society most Americans have at least five children, this can include one person who has five kids that was from failed relationships, marriage, or mistakes. The amount of children that are born per year in the U.S is 3,999,386 last year alone. The U.S alone has over three hundred million people, making us the third largest nations. The U.s is the only population that is experiencing significant population growth. Its population may double before the end of the century. If the limitation of how much children each American can have decrease to two children then we can put a control on overpopulation.

In the world today we have became to known of the upcoming problem;its not only been a problem in the U.S but other counties as well. Today’s population consist of 7,362,302,944 people world wide.Although, growing in population is consistently is a bad thing but it can be a good thing.

Every time a person is born or dies, the population changes.In resent years, the world population has been rising so fast that it is often described as a population explosion. There is plenty of evidence to show that humans have drained our planet's resources because of the amount of people that need certain resources.‘The global increase in family planning means the world's population is predicted to level off at around 9.2 billion during the middle of the century, before beginning to decline’, says the UN. Every 10 seconds, 44 people are born. Even after factoring in death rates, that's 83 million more people each year.

The increase of human population has caused many problems to the environment and the ecosystem. These problems include pollution, taking up land and draining resources such as food. Environment apocalyptic, which is a branch of ecocriticism, believes that one cause of death for humans is the collapsing of the environment due to overpopulation. Literary theorist Malthus states that “population would increase to the point that misery and vice halt it” (Garrard, 2012).

As much as we direct the environmental dialogue on fuel emissions and renewable energy, we shift focus from a topic that is mother to all of ecological issues: the earth wasn’t intended to sustain the human population as it is and definitely not as it would be according to most estimates. Although talks of curbing the population through widespread viral pandemic or mass extinction maybe a slightly radical yet efficient approach, a serious discussion on overpopulation and its ecological effects needs to be had in the near future. Throughout human history, population growth is one of the most important topics brought into discussion. Globally, there are about 7.2 billion people in the world, and it will rise up to 11 billion or more by the 21st century (Brown). When we look back in the history, population growth has been so slow as to be imperceptible within a single generation, “Reaching a globally population of 1 billion in 1804 required the entire time since the humans appeared on the scene. To add the second billion, it took until 1927, just over 100 years. Thirty- three years later, in 1960, world population reached 3 billion” (Brown 15). Then the pace sped
