Domestic violence is an epidemic and the number one health concern in our country. There are more abusers and their victims compared to past years. As a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship, domestic violence is used by one person to gain or maintain power and control over another one. It can be physical, sexual, emotional, and economic abuse and not look the same in every relationship because every relationship is different. This kind of abuse affects people of all ages and sexes, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, education and employment levels. Abuse towards children and the elderly can be violent or aggressive behavior. Thus, there are many types of abuse that one can suffer; awareness of the signs of domestic violence is especially important before getting into any kind of intimate relationship.

Besides emotional abuse, physical abuse and neglect there is also sexual abuse. Studies show that 1 out of every 4 children will be the victim of sexual abuse before reaching 18. Sexual abuse can be physical, verbal, or emotional. There are many different types of sexual abuse. Elder abuse is not just based on hitting there are many different types of abuse such as: physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence, psychological abuse, financial abuse and neglect. Estimates show that 4-6% of the elderly are being abused. In 1996, twenty years ago, 450,000 elderly experienced abuse nationwide. This is a very high number of elders being abused that can’t defend themselves.

Physical abuse is typically described as the use of physical force against another person that may in turn cause injury, pain or impairment. This type of abuse could be perform with or without an object.

Signs of abuse include, but are not limited to, controlling nature, resistant to chance, dismissive, and manipulative behavior. Melinda Smith and Jeanne Segal state that the most telling sign of abuse in the relationship is fearing the other partner (Smith and Segal, 2006). If a woman is afraid of her partner then she may be in an abusive relationship. Men that are abusing women will tear her down and make her feel like she is worth nothing and that she does not deserve any better than an abusive man. An abuser will take away control from her and make her feel worthless. Segal and Smith also state that “abusive behavior and violence is a deliberate choice made by the abuser in order to control you” (Smith and Segal, 2006). Physical abuse of the elderly occurs when a carer harms the individual or places them in danger. A carer may be a family member or someone who is responsible for taking caring of them. The carer may hit, slap, kick, push, burn, or force feed the elderly person and these are all considered to be signs of physical abuse. They may also give the wrong amount or even the wrong medicine to the elderly person. Physical abuse also includes sexual abuse; when someone has sexual contact with an individual without their consent.

Physical: Physical abuse is deliberate physical force that may result in bodily injury, pain, or impairment. Both old and young people can be physically abused.

Physical abuse is where someone is causing physical harm to another. This could be hitting, pushing, slapping, pinching, kicking, scalding, restraint, misuse of medication and other things causing harm. Signs or this would be unexplainable; red marks and bruising, cuts and grazes, burns, weight loss, finger marks, fractures, scratches, pressure ulcers and sores and/ rashes from wet/soiled bedding. The person being abused would also have behavioural changes, health deterioration with our obvious cause.

Refers to hitting, slapping, scratching, pushing or rough handling of another person. It can also involve assault and battery either with the hand or another object. Restraining persons without out justifiable reason and misuse of medication are also forms of physical abuse.

1.1a – Physical abuse can be defined as causing actual physical harm to an individual. 1.2a - The signs and symptoms associated with physical abuse can be e.g. hitting, shaking, biting, throwing, burning and suffocating. 1.3a - The factors that may contribute to an individual being more vulnerable to physical abuse can be due to their age, their physical ability, a physical disability, a sensory impairment, learning difficulties, mental health issues, or their culture or religion.

The psychological theory and the sociological also have the “cycle of abuse”; children who were abused as children do not know any other way of parenting and so abuse their own children, which can result in depression and trauma, which can continue the cycle.

There are several characteristics of abusers. Abusers can be anyone from your parents to your children. Many times abusers have issues that haven’t been resolved. Some of the abuse results from being abused or it comes from social problems. Regardless of the situation abuse is never okay and should be handled accordingly. One characteristic of an abuser is destroying an individual’s property and the things they care about. When an abuser feels like an individual is going to leave the abuse, the abuser will sometimes feel threatened and start trashing their items in their house. It is a way of controlling the situation and trying to make it work out in their favor. Another characteristic is the way an abuser controls everything in one’s life their money, who that individual talks to, and if that person works. Controlling behaviors from abusive persons can get to the point where the individual may feel that they don’t have control over their own life or allowed to do anything due to fear of upsetting the abuser. An abuser may not want the person to work or make more money than them. Recognizing you are in an abusive relationship is sometimes tricky. If your partner makes you afraid, hurt or feel put down, those are signs of abuse. While being in an abusive relationship can be very difficult, there are many ways to cope with it. Other than national call centers willing to help 24/7, there are therapists and friends always ready to listen and help.
