An innocent child begs her mother for food, a single tear running down her cheek. The fires of life that once filled the girl’s eyes slowly begin to fade. The mother embraces her child, tells her the pain will be gone within a few moments. As she holds her, she feels the warmth slip away; her little girl’s body becomes engulfed by empty coldness. So much could have been done to save that life, from local government support to foreign aid, yet not enough aid was given. And so, society is posed with the question of “How much aid should wealthy nations provide for developing countries?” This paper will look at the philosophy behind this question by analyzing two articles. The first article that will be examined is “Obligations to People We …show more content…
LaBossiere’s article presents the unsaid conclusion that the reason for helping others then is not logical, but irrational.
Irrationality leads us to our next article, one that discusses the concept of love. Ancient Greeks believed there were multiple forms of loves, one of which is “agape”. In the second article, published on August 13th, 2008, “Agape: Sacrificial Love”, by Father John Bakas, the author defines agape as love that is “sacrificial seeking to serve” (Bakas, 2008). Father John Bakas is the founder of multiple charity projects, ranging from Project Nino, whose goal is to provide free healthcare to poverty stricken Mexican children, to the Rotary House Children’s Hospice in Fresno, Ca. The main purpose of this article is to illustrate the importance of sacrificial love. A significant portion of the article is an excerpt from Nikos Kazantzakis’s memoir. This excerpt uses a major appeal to emotions, and although this in itself is not an issue, the article does not provide an abundance of concrete data for why this type of love is beneficial. The article relies heavily on situational emotionalism. This can be seen when the excerpt says, “He was extremely pale, and his eyes were swollen and inflamed, as though from weeping” (LaBossiere 2014) and “My eyes filled with tears” (LaBossiere 2014). This article has the reader conclude that sacrificial love is of the upmost importance. Once this is established, the idea of agape can be used to argue
Christianity assumes that our human nature is fundamentally and thoroughly flawed by sin, to the point where a divine miracle of grace is needed to allow us to trust Christ as Savior. Most people in Western cultures, however, do not consider themselves to be sinners and therefore feel no need for a Savior. Comment on this in the light of the detailed accounting rules and regulations intended to prevent investors from being defrauded, and the multi-billion dollar worldwide auditing profession that is intended to add credibility to financial statements.

This paper goes over the effects the media had on the O.J. Simpson case and how the media interfered. The O.J. Simpson murder case is touted as the most televised criminal trial in history and from the second the murders were discovered there was a media frenzy. On the night of June 12, 1994 the bodies of Nicole Brown and her waiter Ronald Goldman were found outside of Nicole’s condo both stabbed to death. The suspect, former athlete, icon, and actor Orenthal James (O.J.) Simpson was the main suspect of the crime. On June 16th, 1994 the LAPD pressed murder charges against him and placed a warrant for his arrest
The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) is an institute dedicated to the quality and safety for patients by helping nurses gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) to provide patient care (QSEN Institute, 2017). Specimen labeling errors fall under the QSEN competency of safety. The purpose of this paper is to present the current problem with specimen processing and compose a second solution to this problem. The organizations that support my project, the National Safety Patient Foundation (NPSF) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), will be discussed as well. Finally, an overall evaluation of the clinical practice project and preceptor experience will be presented.
The state having to repay Medicaid may mean a cut in billable services for Nebraska DD providers. In a staff meeting at Nebraska-DHHS, DD Director Courtney Miller, “the proposed plan is to allow 35 billable hours of Day Habilitation per week instead of 40. This should save money and pay what is owed to Medicaid-CMS” (Miller, personal communication July, 2nd, 2017). However on problematic billing issue with Medicaid, the Omaha World Herald article mentions, “it’s more instability to a system that’s struggling to begin with,” said State Sen. Colby Coash of Lincoln, chairman of the Legislature’s developmental disabilities oversight committee. We really can’t afford to lose any providers” (Omaha World Herald, 2014).
There absolutely needs to be some kind of solution where there is a restriction put in place when it comes to the internet exposing personal information along with online social media with juries conducting trials. Social media and the internet itself has the largest influence on why we have so many hung juries. Nowhere has the rise of the Internet posed so complex a challenge to public policy as it has to the tradition of public access to judicial processes and records. Traditionally, most court files are available to anyone willing to go to the courthouse and look at them. Many have argued that open courts are a fundamental aspect of maintaining a working democracy. Open court records produce responsibility and public confidence in the operation of the judiciary, the operation of other government agencies and the uniform enforcement of laws. Only through public access, for instance, can citizens be assured courts are fulfilling their role of protecting the rule of law. Practical barriers to information use and dissemination imposed by traditional
MEASURE would be an effective tool for me to use if I was a high school counselor who was aiming to improve my school’s graduation and post secondary enrollment rates. MEASURE is an acronym for a 7-step acronym program that stands for Mission, Elements, Analyze, Stakeholder-Unite, Results/Outcome, and Educate. The reason it is an effective program is because it allows a school counseling team to target critical data elements that can be game changers toward their accountability agenda (Stone, 2016). It also allows the counseling team to organize the goals that they have and the policies they have put in place to reach those goals so that they could move the critical data in a positive direction. MEASURE also grants the school
An important social welfare demand is the establishment of efficient healthcare services to accommodate the demands of living in the modern era. Differences in socioeconomic status and existing health care policies contribute to the variation in care quality. Mosadeghrad (2014) noted that factors affecting health care quality can be evaluated using Donabedian measurement to assess technical quality, interpersonal quality, and amenities. Thomas (2014) stated that eliminating health care disparities and improvement of care quality requires changes in policies and legislation to meet the healthcare needs of the population.
In a disquieting chapter on “Love and Romantic Relationships,” Kenrick, Neuberg, & Cialdini (2015) list the goals of love and romantic relationships as 1) obtaining “sexual gratification”, 2) establishing “a family bond”, and 3) “gaining resources and social status” (p. 246). The authors use the “unconventional” (p. 273) relationship of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo as a “positive” (p. 273) example of a love relationship. Numerous questions and philosophical issues may be raised by the authors perspective. One of which is that the goals listed above seem to be self-focused. Are love and romantic relationships truly about having one’s own needs met? Questions like this can best be answered by understanding the difference between selfishness, selflessness, and altruism.
