Part 1: District Code of Ethics
As school leaders, we have to hold the public trust and so ethics are such an important part what we do in our school. I think there are a few simple rules and one of them is always to think about what is the best benefit for our students. Our ultimate goal is to provide a safe learning environment where students are willing to learn and improve. If we keep this in our mind, we can hardly go wrong with an ethical question that we face. Ethical challenges need to be confronted with courage and compassion for those who would be impacted by difficult decisions. School leaders are responsible for setting the examples that others would wish to follow.
Below you will find some of the ethics violations and consequences

Integrity means being honest or accurate. It is one of the fundamental values as educators, we should have. Caring means always willing to help those who are in need. Educators show their care in school by doing more than required. Excellence can be described as striving to be the best. An educator should be committed to reach the highest standards in order to improve his/her students (lifelessonnetwork.org ,2006).. Attitude means being respectful, humble and loyal. A teacher’s positive attitude will bring the better teamwork and higher productivity to the school. Wiseman (2009) stated, “a leader has the courage to stand up for unpopular but just causes and act as an effective champion of social justice” (p.41). Courage is one of the ethics that motives teachers and school leaders to stand up and seek for better ideas without the fear of …show more content…
If we do know have a compass it is so easy to get lost. Consequences of not carrying a compass would be get hurt and lost. It is the same thing being a leader; we have to have a moral compass. As Mirk (2009) stated, “It was clear from these discussions that integrity is essential not only in setting the course on strategic issues but also in addressing the tough, unforeseen challenges that school leaders face almost daily”(p. 18-23). There should be integrity in everyday life in decision and in relationship with our team members. I think there is a line between right and wrong. It is hard to find what is right and wrong in this culture however we have to find the true north and have to follow that star. Code of ethics and moral compass should strengthen each other’s weakness in order to create a work environment where everyone trusts each other and work cooperatively.
It is important to begin a study of resource management and allocation with a discussion of ethics because work ethics guides the school leaders with the help of moral compass how to utilize the public resources and taxpayers’ money. In order to execute the school budget efficiently and avoid conflict of interest, school leaders must know how to develop the code of ethics regarding resource management and
There is a code of ethics that school personnel must follow, it is the school’s leader responsibility ethical practices are maintained. Not only must he/she protect others, they must exhibit the same high-quality of standards themselves. A proficient administrator will protect the moral values of a school by implementing high expectations for the administration, staff, and students in the district.
The Alabama Code of Ethics explicitly describes the behavior of professional teachers. The content supplies a set of guidelines for moral conduct. The Code of Ethics are in place to protect students and teachers. Some modes of unethical conduct are highlighted throughout that warrant disciplinary action.
There are many characteristics that are necessary for teachers to have. First, it’s important for teachers to be vastly knowledgeable about their subject matter. Teachers need to be enthusiastic about whatever they are teaching, especially if they want to sustain students' interest. If the teacher isn't interested in the subject, why should the students? Educators should always be willing to learn all they can about the content in which they are teaching—making the content as relevant or interesting as possible. Another characteristic that is vital in a teacher is having respect for students. Showing respect towards students means valuing each student’s ideas and opinions. It also means exemplifying respect for
Cordeiro and Cunningham (2013) provide several self-assessment tools that are valuable in determining the ethics that guide one 's thinking and practice and identifying leadership traits that affect one 's effectiveness in an educational organization. One such tool is a comprehensive list of statements pertaining to ethics in the first chapter of the authors ' textbook that may prompt one to think about his or her own beliefs about a variety of topics in education, including vision, school culture, learning environment, interpersonal communication, and accountability, among other topics (Cordeiro & Cunningham, 2013). These statements directly relate to the six standards of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium.
I found an interesting article in the New York Times called, Decades Later, Condemnation for a Skid Row Cancer Study, the article reminded me of the Tuskegee experiment. While reading this article about the study I found many things that were unethical applicable to the Health Educators Code of Ethics. The code of ethic that this research clearly violated is article V, responsibility in research and evaluation. Article V says that Health Educators should contribute to the health of the population and to the profession through research and evaluation activities. That when planning and conducting research or evaluation the health educators should do so in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations that were put into place by organizational and institutional policies and to follow professional standards.
Integrity is an essential character quality that defines an effective leader. Integrity is a unifying element; it means more than telling the truth. Integrity is concerned with right and wrong, and adherence to a set of values (Satterlee, 2013, p. 7). In that, integrity speaks on the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles – moral uprightness. A resilient leader should hold steady to their morals when faced with an ethical dilemma. “Leader integrity matters because it plays a significant role in the decision process used by followers when determining who they will follow, who they will trust, to whom they will be loyal and committed, and ultimately for whom they will perform” (Moorman & Grover, 2009, p.107). A leader’s integrity goes beyond their personal character make-up, subordinates will feel a sense of connection to a leader who acts with
It has been identified that there are some ethics for families, schools, and the community to use in establishing
The article in the Ashford Library I have shared with the class concerning ethical leadership practices is “Reflections of Practicing School Principals on Ethical Leadership and Decision-Making: Confronting Social Injustice”. In this article the author pinpoint leadership problems of committed department officers and their personal programs of beliefs to advice considerations of moral policymaking. Decent decision-making supports management preparation, concept, and provision. Problems described were investigated using proper leadership concepts collected with social justice theories. With these skills working institute superintendents, talent formulating supervisors, and other industry or administrative leaders can use ethical decision-making
District 9 is a movie about aliens that come to Earth; they settle in Johannesburg till they are made to relocate to another area and troubles arise from there. The movie was released in 2009 and the time period of the movie is the year 1982 and 2009. It was a period of time when South Africa was going through a lot of problems and these problems are reflected in District 9. Racial discrimination, segregation, xenophobia and others are real life issues and moral issues reflected in the film.
Ethics is a topic that I have long looked forward to studying. I am excited to be taking this course, particularly as it relates to education, a field that I have interest and passion for. Since the beginning of my time in education, I have seen countless decisions made by educators and administrators. With few exception, I have seen those in the educational setting aim to do what is in the “best interest of the student” in a fair and just way, taking into account many factors in the equation. After reading the first two chapters in Shapiro & Stefkovich 's book, Ethical Leadership and Decision Making in Education, I came to the conclusion that this is the single most key idea or foundational component that I
It requires you to be candid and sincere with your peers, subordinates, and superiors. Integrity calls upon you to be honest and honorable in word and deed at all times. Integrity means doing the right thing even if there is no one watching. To have integrity a person must have the ability to distinguish the difference between right and wrong, so that when a controversial issue arises the right and honorable thing will be done. It is an important role in the values because if one does not have integrity they cannot be trusted on in a time of need or when you are working side by side with them in every day work. What they say cannot be taken on word alone. I usually take my integrity very seriously, and it makes me sick to think that I gave that up for something so stupid. We must have integrity because if we don’t we are untrustworthy and unreliable. These are 2 things I never want associated with my name.
An effective leader needs to be genuine and true to the values he holds. If the leader is not honest with those he interacts with, they will not trust him for long. Being clear about values allows the leader to help establish a solid setting for the community to build upon. Strong leaders demonstrate the following values: being trustworthy, caring, focused, flexible, direct, knowledgeable, and approachable. By having a foundation that focuses on the importance of education an instructional leader can focus on clarity and purpose. Through having this clarity of focus, a leader is further prompted to be a lifelong learner (Robbins, 2009).
The Code of Ethics is absolutely essential for every education major to have a strong understanding of. This code presents the main rules and regulations that apply to future teachers to ensure the best behavior and actions possible, inside and outside of the classroom. It is a clear guide of unethical activities that teachers may never indulge in without risking suspension, revocation, denial, or reprimand of any teaching certificate. The code is broken down into eleven different standards which are easy for educators to understand and abide by.
When reflecting on what I have read in the book Building an Ethical School by Robert J. Starratt, and the information obtained from my current Ethics and Social Responsibilities class, I feel I have an abundance of valuable information that will guide me in creating an ethical school environment when I am a school leader.
Personalized learning and differentiated instruction can make or break the class with their attitude. A student needs to have self-respect for the educational achievement.
