Becoming a co-leader was an unexpected surprise that occurred with the help of a friend. I happened to bump into a professor in need of a co-leader and I had an interview at that exact moment. It was an internship experience that I have always wanted to try, but doubted my abilities. I was given the opportunity by the wonderful professor, Stuart Bloom. I had taken the class with him before and admired him so much. He is one of a kind and is so open and honest about his feelings. Stuart is an amazing marriage and family therapist that has helped so many people in their personal journeys. I was intimidated by how open he can be, but he really helped me see myself and troubles in a new light. I was nervous and scared when first starting my journey as a C&C leader. I had so much trouble trying to open up myself in a group of strangers and trying to figure out how to become a leader at the same time. My aspiration is to be able to become a Marriage and Family Therapist at a university to help university students like me, deal with any problems that come their way. I know how scary it can be for a new university student at a new school to try to feel comfortable. I would love to create and run groups with these students so that they can share their similar stories with their peers. I would also love to run groups on social and general anxiety for university students. One of the major issues students have at a new school is connecting with their peers, because of their anxieties and fears of being judged. By using educational tools and counseling, I will help these students learn more about their thought patterns and misconceptions of themselves. I will use my own personal experiences and education to help these students
A time I held a leadership position was this year for DECA. I was an involved member of DECA as a freshman, and I had been thinking of running for the vice president position as a sophomore. What really solidified my reservations was when the DECA teacher, Mrs. McGhee, asked me to run for an office. She told me that she noticed I was an invested member and that I would be a good asset to the board. I was so thankful she made this comment because that position in DECA was one of the things that really sparked my interest in leadership, and it helped me to learn more about how I lead. Self leadership through personal learning and reflection “provides a foundation for effective leadership skills” (Watson, 2004). The Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) includes self leadership as one of it’s five core leadership competencies, which is defined as “The Lead Self” domain. As part of Leading Self, effective leaders must demonstrate: self awareness, managing self, developing self and demonstrating character. (CCHL, 2010).
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.

The leadership positions that I hold include being a captain of the football team, a co-chair of the National Honor Society, and a co-chair for the Black Awareness Society for Education. Holding these positions has been both a honor and a struggle. Having so many responsibilities at the same time was a daunting task at first, but as the years progressed, I became more and more accustomed to the task.

I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. One of the topics in organizational development today is leadership. Leadership is what individuals do to mobilize other people in organizations and communities. According to Kouzes & Posner, there are five practices and ten commitments of exemplary leadership. The five practices of exemplary leadership include: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.
