Personal Narrative: My Leadership Experiences

I had the privilege on attending a Supervisors Training for first time Supervisors, the Training was in New Mexico from February 20-24, 2017 and it consisted of avoiding Conflict and communicating with your Employees, I feel that it was insightful with understanding what supervisors go through and what to expect and understand situations that arise from co-workers to supervisor title. I was honored to be able to attend this training because since I have been with the Yakama Nation Tribe going on 7 years in Human Services field I have been an Employee and I wasn’t aware of occurances that supervisors face. I know and I understand that being a Supervisor is a different role and takes on a higher challenge and I have never been the one to back

The Baccalaureate Essentials are educational tools that are utilized to prepare the graduating Baccalaureate Generalist nurse to practice at the professional level delivering safe, top-quality, competent care to an ever-changing diverse patient population. “Baccalaureate-prepared nurses provide patient-centered care that identifies, respects, and addresses patients’ differences, values, preferences, and expressed needs” (AACN, 2008). The Essentials expand on previous learned skills and knowledge of sciences and humanities to promote enhanced communication, critical thinking/reasoning and encourage the continuation of life-long learning.

I’m predisposed to this leadership theory or style because of its consideration for awareness of the element(s) of reality, that is, life experiences and some other factors, and the adaptability to each environment one finds self. This leadership theory presents itself with the understanding that organizations are different from one to another, and as a result of the differences in structures and the kinds of people that can be found around organizations; the most important leadership capability is the ability to adapt to the environment. There is no one style that fits all, but this style helps to better lead as there are times when one may need to exact authority and at some other time, one would need to show humility. Because we all come from different backgrounds, have difference life experiences and different role models, our values, preferences and priorities become shaped over the course of lifetime. The mentor I have chosen is Jane Stanley. Ms. Stanley was influenced by the stories of her grandfather to become a nurse. She was unsure if she could do it at first because she did not think she was smart enough, but she began to love it. While Ms.Stanley was attending school she came across what she thought was an obstacle. She was five months pregnant and ready to drop out of school, but with the encouragement of her husband she did not give up. She graduated and could not be more grateful for the strength god had given her.

Leadership is defined as the power or ability to lead other people. Historically, I have strived to be a person that my peers would call a leader. I want to be a part of the Florida Leadership Academy so that I can learn new leadership skills from other proven leaders, as well as spread some of the skills that I have honed over the years. Throughout my life, I have pursued numerous leadership roles such as assistant captain of my high school’s varsity ice hockey team, Lead Volunteer at Young At Art, and currently, the secretary of the University of Florida Student Investment club. In addition, as a sophomore in high school, I took the initiative to apply and enroll at the College Academy at Broward College. This decision was a unique opportunity

I believe that leaders must accept the crucibles and acid test so that they can identify their value, and accomplish their great dream and tough missions. As the author of the “Crucibles of leadership” mentioned that leaders should equip with the following essential skills, namely, “engage others in shared meaning, a distinctive, compelling voice, integrity, and adaptive capacity.1 We know how these essentials important, however, we don’t understand how to obtain these elements as well as how to employ them, because the overconfidence always blind us. Thus, people who desire to become the leaders need to go through the crucible test.

As a supportive B.A.S.E. Leader, I participated in Frog Hollow's Halloween Carnival, B.A.S.E. kick-off - an event in which B.A.S.E. leaders lead, support, and have fun with incoming grade eights, and B.A.S.E. lunches - a weekly event for grade eights that B.A.S.E. leaders supervise, and clean up afterwards. In fact, one of my most memorable experiences include the time when a shy kid, named Spencer, was eating all alone during a B.A.S.E. lunch that I was supervising. Hence, I decided to have a welcoming conversation with him, and introduce him to some of the other grade eights in the room because from my experience in the past as a shy kid, I would've greatly appreciated it if someone had introduced, and welcomed me to other kids as well. Baccalaureate program provides nurses with an innovative education grounded in nursing and related science, humanities, and leadership. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2008), students in the Baccalaureate Nursing Program are better in inter-professional practice. Nurses who graduate from an accredited Baccalaureate program helps to promote, restore, maintain, and advocate for improved health outcome of a diverse population and community. Over the past two summers I have done quite a bit. In the summer of 2013-14 I went to the Summer leadership Academy. SLA is a one week boot camp for AFJROTC cadets. With approximately 10 schools including Dickinson high school. I was appointed guidon bearer. We woke up at 0430 and went to the field for PT, and had breakfast at 0600.throughout the rest of the day we did several activities from navigation class to the marksmanship course. At the end of boot camp I was awarded the Spirit award and Distinguished graduate award. In the summer of 2014-15 I stayed home to help my cousin in his home repairs. From redoing some of his deck to building a shed. We also worked on his car changing the oil, brakes, rotors, spark plugs

The gifts, motives, role, likes and dislikes as a religious leader after serving in my supervised ministry setting are vast due to having two different settings in which I served. The first half was as a spiritual leader within a role of chaplaincy at Morristown Medical Center. The other half of the year was in my role of Local Licensed Associate Pastor which was appointed to me by the Bishop of the Greater New Jersey Conference. Each of the positions I held had both positive and negative experiences. I can honestly say I have learned something from all of them.

The field of nursing is constantly changing and growing in order to facilitate the needs of the public. To address these challenges, obtaining an advanced education can lead to better outcomes and health care promotion in nursing. According to the National League for Nursing (2012), a baccalaureate prepared nurse is provided information on how to apply the skills needed to function as a registered nurse, advocate for the safety and quality of care provided to patients and their families in the community, and promotes clinical inquiry by analyzing research and promoting best practice through evidence-based outcomes (p. 39). This summer I had an opportunity to attend the CORO Leadership program, which was different than the internship I had last year at the Jewish Community Federation. CORO is a eight week program that helps students become civically engaged and assume leadership roles in our community. Everyday we had a seminar day in which we learned different topics, such as how to give an elevator pitch, social enterprise and grant writing. For seven weeks, everything I learned tied up with the San Francisco cohort community action project because the skill sets we learned helped us organize our project. For example, our topic is homelessness and we had to invite over fifty people to our event. The elevator pitch came in handy when we had a minute to explain to a stranger what CORO is and what our goal for the community action project is. This was a good experience because this program enjoyed putting the students on the spot. I often had to work in a group to give presentations that we had about four hours to prepare for. For social enterprise seminar, my group was assigned the issue, homelessness. After four hours of brainstorming, we presented our idea which was to build more affordable housing. Although it was a long process, and many investors had questions for us to answer, at the end of the day my group won.

Having spent all of my academic life at a Catholic school, I think that Roncalli is the next step to help me grow academically and spiritually.Each day I am reminded of what a blessing Catholic school really is.What I can offer to Roncalli is a strong work ethic and leadership experience. As president of student council I can offer Roncalli my leadership experience, I have always worked well in leadership positions and that is something I think I can continue to offer at Roncalli.
