Personal Narrative: My Leadership Experiences

Baccalaureate prepared nurse is trained to be leaders in his or her field of practice. This has been the goal of this program from day one. I remember one of our first semester’s assignments was to attend a professional meeting organized by a nursing organization in the Phoenix Greater area. The mentorship program conducted by the Student Nurse Associate was a priceless aspect of the program. Mentoring lower-level student and even some of my cohorts has been one of my strongest and enjoyable parts of the whole experience.

When things go wrong people look up to the leader to come through with answers and react based on the leader’s reaction. Mary failed her first exam. She called me crying. I calmed her down and ask for answers to her problem. I remained positive and honest through the whole ordeal. I found out she did not practice with questions before her exam. I advised her to stick with my strategy because it has been tried and tested. She did just that and was successful on subsequent exams and benchmarks.
One leadership theory that I like is the situational theory. According to Wolinski (2010), “this theory suggests that different situations require different styles of leadership. That is, to be effective in leadership requires the ability to adapt or adjust one’s style to the circumstances of the situation.” I am glad through the time of storm, I was able to remain calm and direct Mary what to
