Personal Narrative: The Car Turned Up Into The Home

The car drove up into the driveway where the contents of the house had been ransacked, abandoned in the yard, and tossed aside like the four children. Memories flicker as the furnishings are reviewed. Empty beer bottles, a young girl being dragged into her bedroom brusquely by her hair. Assorted clothes, a teenager having to beg for hand-me-downs. A box of pots and pans, a family surviving off of donated food. A folder of awards, a father neglecting any achievements. The sum of all these morose recollections, debased an already insecure girl, making her unsure of the chance of a bright future or even one worth living in. Fast forward ten years. This same girl is now a seemingly confident student who has channeled her intellect and wit to achieve academic honors and a close group of friends who are also chasing the academic dream. “I am achieving my dreams, but still feel empty,” she thought gloomily. “What is it going to take to shake off the hurt of the past and move forward?” This girl is me, and my name is Brianna. The turning point came in the form of a community service project - a trip to one of Alaska’s fringe communities. Picture an old playground, swings broken, jungle-gym rusted and bent, overgrown with weeds and full of seemingly feral children.
