Personal Opinion: George Washington

The colonies faced insurmountable odds when the American Revolution began, but were able to successfully overcome the most powerful army and navy in the world through contributions such as George Washington’s extraordinary qualities, having knowledge of the lay of the land, gaining foreign assistance, and having the colonist support the cause.

Ranking things like music, movies, and sports is a common hobby and ranking Presidents is no exception. To rank the first four Presidents of the United States can be very controversial. Each of the Presidents made successes but some had been involved with more conflicts than the others. Although many might disagree, the first four Presidents of the United States ranked best to worst are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, then John Adams. It may be cliche to say, but George Washington should be considered best of the first four presidents of the United States.

There is a clear reason why George Washington is the best out of the first four Presidents. He is quite possibly one of the best. He was really the one who pushed our nation to heights that were thought to have been impossible to reach. He also put out laws and regulations that balanced the government, and benefitted the people. There are good reasons as to why Jefferson, Madison, and Adams cut it close that will eventually be touched on.

        This magnificent man was our first president. He was the first born child of his mother but not his father. His father was Augustine Washington, but had two other boys and one girl with his former wife Jane Butler who died in 1730. Augustine remarried  Mary Ball in 1731 and on February 22, 1732 they had George Washington. In 1743 Augustine died and left Mary to take care of all the children they had together and the children he had with Jane.  He had a total of ten children. George was only eleven when his father died and had to look up to his older half brother Lawrence for guidance. Lawrence tutored and tried to give George as much of an education he could. George Washington made it possible that America could be created. George Washington was not very well-educated, according to an article called George Washington’s Education, “George Washington's level of education was far lower than any of the other Founding Fathers of the United States. In fact, he was often scorned by some of the other Founding Fathers for this inadequacy.” George Washington was not the most intelligent person but according to the article, “even more importantly, though, his seemingly humble, controlled, and respectful demeanor won the hearts of the American people and established him as a national icon.” Even though George Washington wasn’t very well-educated, he was humble, controlled, and respectful. Society turns to powerful leaders for guidance in times of uncertainty. Especially after the American Revolution, the people needed a leader to mollify the concerns entailing their newfound independence. They needed a president who could guide them like a king without creating a power vacuum, who could lead with respect without becoming corrupt, and who could put the future of the country beyond his own desires; America’s future was reliant on a leader who had these qualities. Luckily, the first president, George Washington, acted as the “good king” America heavily needed.

Another story about the young George Washington was about he had thrown a silver dollar across the Potomac River. These stories are just myth, but it shows a reader that if someone makes up moral stokes about someone, especially a man of high power, that the person they are making the stories about must be a very moral person. This is exactly what young George Washington was. He was very kind, compassionate, and hard working. His father died when he was eleven years old and it is very plausible, that, because he was the oldest male still left in the house, he became the new “man of the house”. This is where he learned his character of hard work and responsibility.

A man who stood 6 feet, 2 inches tall with teeth composed of wood and hippopotamus ivory does not even begin to describe George Washington. He was born February 22, 1732 but forever lives in American history. He was a large component of the French and Indian War and achieved many accomplishments as a military leader and soldier. One of the most unique qualities of George Washington was the fact that he was very insightful when learning from his prior defeats in battle, and he had a strong will to never give up. He learned from his experiences in each battle to learn more about himself, and more about his desire to change the 13 colonies association with Britain. Washington was born with advantageous physical characteristics. Washington’s sturdy physique and attractive features made him appear the way many believed that a proper military leader should appear. He was said to be a strapping man of commanding presence. Not only was he handsome, but he was also very strong; he exhibited by many feats of strength including an ability to throw a rock 215 feet into the air. Just as Washington was physically blessed, he was also keenly intelligent. Due to reduced family circumstances, Washington received just shy of seven years of formal education. Despite this, Washington’s innate intelligence allowed him to become self-taught. His writing skills became so well developed, he was able to expertly manage his military image, through his written word. Also fortuitously, Washington was born with an ambitious fire in his belly, and a knack for survival. Whether his insecurities ignited that fire or not, sometimes putting him in disastrous situations, Washington was able to escape many near-death experiences on the battlefield, without a scratch. Lastly, the weather consistently interceded to aid Washington in war. At the Battle of Brooklyn, Washington’s nighttime tactical retreat may not have been successful but for the thick fog and howling wind. The soldier’s time to serve would be up in just ten days, the British continued to win battles, all hope of winning the war was fading and everyone was ready to put down their weapons and surrender to Great Britain. However, George Washington was not settling with anything less than trying their best. He kept that little flicker of hope that was still left, alive.
