It is said that “Time and Tide waits for none”. As an upcoming college freshman I need to understand the value of time to succeed in life. I have to understand that everything needs to be prioritized no matter the case. That being able to manage my time correctly will teach me discipline which is exactly what I need to get through college with the goals I have set for myself. Individuals who stick to a time plan are more likely the people who realize their goals and objectives within the shortest possible time span. This will help me get my work done before the deadline instead of working on it the night before.

Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.

Transitioning in to college has made me realize just how important all these traits are and how they correspond to my success. Wes’s visit to Longwood and speech helped me a lot too. Personal responsibility is the simple fact that I am an adult now and my action speak back on me. I have to take responsibility for myself, my actions and education. If I miss class that all on me and no one else and I will suffer the consequences.

Through the course Strategies for College Success Cpd 150 taught by Michelle Garland one can learn many things. Despite this course possibly being more helpful to others then it was to me it did still teach me multiple things. At the beginning of the course I had been dealing with relationship drama and figuring out how online college works, now halfway through the course the drama has subsided and I understand how online college works.I have learned that one of the most important factors of college success is determination. It is a person's ability to keep trying as hard as they can no matter what comes their way. I say this because college can be difficult and even seem pointless at times, but those who are determined enough to keep going, to keep trying, will eventually succeed. Although I am stubborn I have issues staying determined, I do generally accomplish what I need to. Another skill going along with determination is the ability to seperate the various areas of ones life. For example the ability to have a fight with your best friend then go to class and learn just fine. The initial shock of the significant workload and expectations can take their toll, but good time management skills can prevent multiple late nights in a row to get assignments done on time. Kelci Lynn Lucier has worked in higher education for ten years, and has experienced students struggle to try and find the balance between extracurricular activities, personal activities, and education priorities. Luckily, Lucier has four tips to help best use the time provided in a day. Lucier’s first step focuses on managing ones academic time and how it needs to be the top priority above all other curricular activities, stating: “It's important to remind yourself why you're in college in the first place: to graduate” (Lucier). Lucier’s second step is be able to manage personal time, she talks about how unrealistic it is to always be working, studying, or learning, she wants students to try and find time to do something fun with friends or a club. Lucier’s third step is to wkeep the students health in mind, it does no good to stay up until two in the morning studying over a history mid-term, only to be half asleep for the test anyway; sleep is important and without can only increase the stress. For some people, it may be difficult to manage time in order to keep up with school and still be involved with extracurricular activities. However, for myself, this was not the case. I have been involved in the Slippery Rock University Winter Guard since my freshman year, which requires much dedication and commitment. Competing in local and even international level competitions across the country, the dedication required for membership in the guard is extraordinary. My commitment to the winter guard as well as my determination in my studies has allowed me to prime my time management skills to be successful in both areas without compromising the quality of my efforts in either one. Moreover, I have also been involved in numerous volunteer opportunities including Special Olympics, therapeutic horseback riding, and sled hockey. I also have a job at the Student Health Center. Although I keep myself very busy, I have managed to maintain an overall GPA of 3.5. Through my shadowing experiences in physical therapy, I have seen that some days can be fast-paced; therefore, it is important to have the ability to manage time in order to accomplish everything effectively and

Although many people will have different opinions on how to achieve personal success in college and consequently increase student retention, there are effective strategies that are proven to aid in achieving these goals.

It is the dream of everyone to join college with the hope of getting a better tomorrow and a foundation for them to make it in life. How I manage time is a reflection of what I value. Managing my time corresponds to how successful I will be in college and throughout life. Knowing and setting priorities to meet goals, carrying out plans, taking control of time, and staying focused are some events that are involved with time management. For many of us, balancing school with work and family is the greatest challenge involved with prioritizing. Good advance planning will help in meeting these challenges. Staying focused is usually difficult, especially for first-year students. Staying focused entails remembering and dedicating to the most important purpose for being in college. Sacrificing unnecessary commitments and keeping my
