Working with victims of domestic violence can be an extremely rewarding and fulfilling endeavor. One of the most crucial aspects for a paralegal working with victim of domestic violence is adequately engaging in the task of educating oneself to understand the commonalities of such victims and the ordeals that they have been through. Such clients are drastically different from other individuals who have suffered other physical and violent crimes. Understanding the background of someone who has lived through domestic violence is absolutely central to being able to provide adequate and sensitive legal care. Most victims of domestic violence are women (95%) though domestic violence can have an impact on ever age, class, race, ethnic, cultural or religious group (purplerainfoundation, 2012). "In the United States, nearly one in three adult women experience at least one physical assault by a partner during adulthood (American Psychological Association, Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family 1996 Report)" (purplerainfoundation, 2012). These women are often terrified of their partner's temper, apologize when they are abused and often in the most extremely controlling and isolated environment where the abusive partner will control who the partner sees and where the partner goes outside of the home, jealous of outside relationships (purplerainfoundation, 2012). Sadly enough, the majority of people who are murdered are not likely killed by a stranger during a hold-up or similar crime but are killed by someone they know. Domestic violence is an act of assault that happens every day, fixing an issue like domestic violence is hard but not impossible. By speaking out and helping those who have been abused is the hardest but most effective way of limiting domestic violence. Lots of people blame domestic violence related issues on substance abuse or a controlling man. Those statements may be true but it’s an over exaggeration. Abuse causes severe physiological effects as well as emotional. Domestic violence can be almost anything and can happen to anyone at any time.

In most circumstances, family and loved ones are usually seen as the most reliable support systems that a person can have. However, there are certain circumstances in which family members are the ones who are creating the problems. I would like to mention two most common approaches like family therapy and personal counselling to counsel the victims. Family therapy is given only when the victim of spousal abuse is in contact with every member of the family. This therapy guides the family members to be in touch with each other and tries to help the suffered victim, to get out from the situation by having new habits and by new ways of relating. Personal counselling is also called individual counselling. Individual counselling is a one to one discussion between the counsellor and the client, who is the person seeking treatment. Domestic Violence could be addressed in many ways but the best way is should be left up to the officer who arrives at the scene of the problem. Every domestic violence call is differently and it there is different ways for them to be handled. If there is physical violence and someone is in a lot of danger than the police officer should really remove them from the situation. An individual appointment is recommended being the client should not feel overwhelmed by a large group at initial contact. Intervention begins with the validating process. By letting a battered woman know that you are concerned, that she is not alone, that she doesn’t deserve the abuse and that help is available will give her the confidence to know she can succeed (Stark & Flitcraft, 1995). Like so many of the topics studied by investigators in our research institutions, domestic violence does not happen in a vacuum. In an attempt to better understand DV as it occurs in the real world with the accompanying compounding issues which often occur with DV (e.g. addiction, financial problems, health issues, language barriers, etc.), I propose a two-part research project. The first part will focus on undocumented DV survivors and their experiences and journey toward seeking assistance/resources for DV. The second part will focus on the perpetrator of DV and attempt to identify typologies of batterers. Taken together the hope is that this research project will provide a better understanding of domestic violence as experienced in the community.

Since the 1970’s domestic violence against women has been a huge issue in the United States. In fact, battered women flocked to safe havens within local shelters that were created to protect them and their off spring. (Stark,E. 2012). It was determined that domestic abuse had dangerously heighten during the 80’s, and special attention was essential to addressing the spike in cases. With law enforcers being on the front line, it was determined that they needed the training to spot and assess domestic cases. Unfortunately, many cases were not simply cut and dry cases. It appears that the offenders mastered tactics which masked abuse against their partners. Physical abuse that was once an obvious and domineering sign was now replaced with a new type of abuse. This abuse crippled the victim by mentally incapacitating their victims. Such tactics are known as Coercive Control. According to Stark, this type of control uses psychological and emotional tactics in order to control the victim into doing what they wanted. (Stark, E. 2012). In beginning my revision process, I started by staring at my submitted essay over and over. First thought, I should have changed the title to something along the lines of, “Domestic Violence, is there Treatment?” Second thought, Wow!! What a difference I am from the person who first began this course. I took a look back over my previous submitted writing assignments and could see my writing abilities has drastically improved, As I reviewed and reflected on the submitted essay “Domestic Violence and Treatment”, I believe, I did a complete and thorough job in delivering my subject. As I previously stated, I credit you, Mr. Perkins and this course for my improvements. I have always struggled to put my thoughts on paper in a manner that is coherent. I now feel that my ability to write and express my ideas, thoughts and knowledge have grown stronger.

Women will continue to suffer from domestic violence unless there is some sort of intervention to help them. When dealing with this population, it is essential to create a safe environment where the woman can talk freely about the abuse without any retaliation from the abuser. When someone comes into a therapeutic session, everyone deserves to be treated with respect and care. This in turn will create a sense of hope that a different type of life can be possible.
