I grew up in what I like to call, a ‘loose family’. That doesn 't exactly mean we had no values or close communication. I say that with the perspective I now have as a 24 year old, young man. Without going into too much detail, the least I can say is, although we weren’t there together for a majority of the time we always had one another for advise and constant motivation. As a kid I would spend a lot of my time reading and I would do so in what I considered my best friend, a huge pine tree in our front yard. As strange as it may sound I fell in love with not only that specific tree, but all trees. Since that time I’ve never felt any less towards all nature and wildlife and I hope to one day educate on that subject. I’ll reach that goal because of one thing. Motivation. To give you an inside look at where my motivation comes from and my initial motivation to start college, it starts with my graduation of high school. At this time I was the ripe young age of 18, I had no idea what I wanted or what the future had in store. I was playing in a band and we spent just under 4 years touring the U.S. and parts of the U.K. At that time and that age I felt invincible, little did I know, all great things at some point come to an end. The last few years have been spent working multiple jobs I’ve hated, waking up each day more and more miserable. My most recent job is in an auto body shop, so far it’s my favorite but it’s still not what I long for, it’s not my passion. You can’t love
Pursing a career as a medical doctor is an opportunity for me to mentor youth in underserved populations. As a child, I was raised in the low income, urban community of Roxbury, MA. Although not as notorious today, the neighborhood had garnered negative attention for its high crime rates. My mother emigrated from Haiti and raised me as a single parent. Due to our financial circumstance, Roxbury became our permanent residence. I have always felt there was something lacking in Roxbury in comparison to other towns I visited. My teenage years were largely spent in the suburban town of Stoneham where I attended high school. There was a literal difference in air quality and a psychology contrast in future prospects. While native students of
There are few certainties of what one will encounter during life. A common joke names two: death and
I joined Jumpstart, because I saw the opportunity to help children who live in a impoverish community. I myself live in a impoverish community, and I understand the struggle to not have enough resources at home or parents with insufficient experience and time to help me with my studies. I want to be the motivation for the children to help them enjoy learning and find support in me for anything they need.
The MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) has given me insightful information over 4 different dichotomies: 1)Where I focus my attention 2) How I take in information 3) How I make decisions based on the information and 4) How I deal with the world. After completing the assessment, I was dubbed ‘INTJ’. This being 9% Introvert, 38% iNtuitive, 3% Thinking, and 31% Judging. To my surprise, after reading the detailed report, I found most of the information presented, to be ‘spot on’. According to the Center for Confidence and Well-Being, “Of all the personality types, INTJs are most motivated by “vision”. They have a great need to come up with a unifying idea of a future, improved state, which is then their job to realize. This inner vision can be so strong for INTJs and so individual that they are often reckoned to be the most independent-minded of all the types” (Craig, C., 2014). This provided me with great validation that I have been lucky enough to find myself in the right career. Currently, I am the interim Director of Quality at an acute care hospital in San Diego. Daily, myself and my team are looking for ways to improve hospital processes, systems, and relationships. Always striving for a future vision or ‘ideal state’ of how we would like to see our organization functioning to better serve our community. Many people have told me that they could ‘not do what I do’ simply because of the data collecting, analyzing, reporting, and
I now spend more of my time in nature, alongside my dog or with friends enjoying what it provides for me. Whether it’s clearing my mind, coming to peace, or to adventure, it has become my home. I am motivated to teach others that if they follow their happiness they can create your own path, and make the life of their dreams. I want others to have memories like my backpacking trip, make life a journey, and craft it into exactly what they want. Whether it’s guiding people through the mountains or down the rapids I will always want to be a part of the
It was a cold autumn night in North Carolina when I realized that my youth was being taken away from me. I wanted to run away and go back to the life that I had known; where I had the opportunity to go to school was happy and understood the language. Instead I was in a foreign land with my family and we could not return for there was no future in my homeland. According to my father, we had to keep migrating because it was the best thing for our family. It was then when I realized that this is not what I wanted for my family and I asked my father that we needed to go somewhere where I can go to school because it was affecting everybody including my little brother. My father raised me to believe I could accomplish anything I set my mind to
Many things come to mind when thinking about what are my motivations for returning to school. My top three motivations would have to be: Being the best role model for my nephew, doing something that I am passionate about and proving to myself that I can finish what I started many years ago. Growing up I looked up to my parents and coaches as role models; but, now I see my nephew look to me as a role model and him to be proud. He is a very smart kid that will be able to achieve all his goals. I just want to be able to show him the way. Being financially satiable has always being a priority but I have come to learn that unless you love what you do no amount of money will be enough. My current job pays well but I find myself bored at times. I
A degree from Flemming Center’s Healthcare Management program will provide me with the knowledge to apply management problem-solving skills to improve health systems and influence health management and policy decisions. The diverse faculty background in management and policy will enhance my educational experience by providing me with the resources needed to succeed in this field. I am particularly interested in working with Dr. Aday. Being the first in my family to graduate from college and pursue higher education, I would enjoy speaking to her about her experiences with this as well as her success in being a leader in healthcare. In addition, Flemming Center offers a variety of resources to prepare its students for life after graduate school. For example, all
According to J.K. Rowling, “I would like to be remembered as someone who did the best she could with the talent she had”(J.K. Rowling Quotes). Because I want to be remembered as someone who did the best she could, I can relate to J.K. Rowling. I did not mind writing when I was little as long as it was not assigned.
I am a focused individual because I consistently stay on top of all my school work because I know my education is important to my career goal
My life has been filled with setbacks; however, each obstacle has been met with the tenacity and guidance to overcome each and every barrier. Before I was able to create a strong framework to work through these challenges, you and my family gave me the opportunity to grow and explore. As you may remember, during my early teen years there was high conflict with my stepfather in the house. This was also compounded by strains of the relationship I lacked with my biological father and pressures of maintaining a high academic performance in school. Those who interact with me on a daily basis may not have easily gathered any of this information, but this aspect highlights the importance of a strong doctor patient relationship.
How might someone clearly answer the question of "what motivates you?" or "what gets you out of bed in the morning?" Is it the fear of living a life of relative insignificance? Is it the potential of making a lot of money? Regardless of what each of our answers might be, over the years I have come to realize that life is too short to waste any amount of time doing something which I am not 100 percent in love with doing. Life is not a practice round or a warm-up lap; it is not a "means to an end" or a "stepping stone to what could be." Having one opportunity to explore and fulfill my personal legend, I am determined to seize it. Since the days of my youth there have been specific, deeply-rooted interests which have shaped the course of my
In our lives, we have to make important choices, and sometimes our choices determine our happiness or sadness. As a Filipino, our families tell us to do well in school and to not make bad choices because they want us to be successful and to have ethical morals. Growing up as a Catholic, I was taught to be obedient and respectful to my family which has shaped who I am today. Yet, I too made some mistakes, and I learned from the consequences. From my failures, I learned to not belittle myself, but to grow.
In a small part, every aspect of my life motivates me to strive for my dreams. My family; parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, nephews and nieces motivate me and push me harder to achieve my goals and aspirations. Me being the first in my family to graduate high school, and enter into college is a tremendous amount of pressure. I want to be able to prove to them that they can reach their dreams no matter how old or young, if they are determined. Mainly, I want to show them that everything is obtainable if you work for it. My boyfriend motivates me to be the best verision of myself that I can be, we both chose to go to SFA together, after I stated I wasn’t interested in going to college. He motivates me to be better, faster, stronger and more determined. He teaches me to set high goals and reach them. Lastly, my coworkers motivate me to continue to improve my already strong work ethic. As their manager, they depend on me to teach them how to succeed in our work environment. Having people look up to me motivates me to no end. I love to set examples and be a leader to show people anything is possible.
Motivation is one of the most discussed topics in the present era’s organisations, especially since renowned psychologists like Maslow and Herzberg are dedicating their efforts to understanding it. Companies are investing a significant amount of resources in improving productivity in order to maximise profits. One of these important resources is of human nature. In order to get the very best out of employees, some motivational approaches need to be used. But what is motivation and how do I successfully motivate? I will try to relate one of my personal experiences with a friend to some of the most influential motivational theories. After introducing my story and making a definition of motivation I will address the ideas of Taylor,
