Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing

Decent Essays

The requirement of testing makeup products has caused makeup companies to rely on animals to be used as test subjects. This reliance has resulted in many animals being damaged, resulting in a loss of consumers. Instead of settling with the traditional practices, makeup companies should look into skin alternatives to testing on animals. Testing for chemical hazards is a vital part in the creation of makeup. Analysis of hazardous chemicals in makeup is now a required standard, put forth by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938 (Meadows, Michelle). Though this law does not require the use of animals, many used animals during this time because of the lack of alternatives and experimentation. An argument used when discussing this issue of animal testing is the Lash Lure incident of 1933. The National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine talk about when many were blinded from using this mascara and one died. This was due to an untested chemical called phenylenediamine. Reasoning for the lack of proficiency behind this argument is because this happened in the 1930’s when testing for unsafe chemicals wasn’t seen as necessary. Now there are many options to test for these chemicals and are required by law for these products to be safety approved (“Safety Testing”). In Countries like Europe the European Union has not only banned the practice of animal testing completely, but also banned advertising products have been tested on animals (Moran, Jim, Locke, Paul).
