Whether someone is a male, a female, or transgender, sports is something they all have a chance to participate in. Most individuals involved in sports are grouped into teams. Together as a team they score points to win their games. In most cases males will play on an all boys team, and females will participate on an all girls team. For those who are transgender it depends on how they choose to identify themselves. The number of coed sports teams are little to none. One may find themselves asking why this is. Team sports should be not be gender neutral because of conflicting opinions regarding coed sports, stereotyping gender inequalities can hinder unity within a coed team, and varying differences in physiologies cause unfair games. Firstly, there are conflicting opinions regarding coed sports. If a male hits a female, people could become hostile to the male and accuse him of being too rough. Others would think it completely unfair when athletes …show more content…
It is scientifically proven that males are stronger than females, having more muscle and endurance. This would form complications if teams were to convert to coed. The males could overpower the team and females would get little chances to fully participate in the sport. There are only a select few females that are physically on par with male athletes. Even if females were to be exceptionally talented in their sport, someone larger in size can use that to their advantage and outdo them. It is unfair for a female who is talented in her sport to be easily outrun by a male who has much longer legs at their disposal. Also, teams could have the upperhand if they have more of one gender then the other. Thus causing difficulties with an unfair game, the team with the most males can have a physical advantage to the team with more females. With the varying difference in physiologies, problems will occur and affect the fairness of the
Some thing that you may not of known is that one of the first coed sports is soccer because there was not enough females to make there own team. (Snow) There are quite a few reasons that soccer is not a fully a coed sport anymore. One of thoughts reasons is that until a child goes into puberty both girls and boys are built generally the same. Then after puberty guys will generally become stronger, easier then girls physically can. Also there are fewer girl athletes that have the speed to be able to keep up with the boy athletes in soccer.
Sports should not be co-ed, due to the differences in the capability levels of athleticism between females and males. Sports are based off of age and skill, but the female and male genders each have major differences in athleticism. Sports such as football include factors such as size, strength and quickness. The male and female bodies are developed differently creating an unfair advantage to the men. Men are born stronger than women due to their production of testosterone which helps build muscle. Women do produce testosterone, but very little of it making the men naturally stronger. Men just happen to have denser and stronger bones and ligaments than women, causing a higher risk of injury. It is much harder if men and women play on the
Throughout history, woman have been fighting for equality with men. This fight isn’t over and doesn’t stop with the right to vote or the right to wear pants. The progressive movements of feminism are starting to creep into younger generations, including, but not limited to young girls wanting to play on predominantly male-dominated sport teams. There are a lot of controversies when looking at this topic, saying there’s a natural strength advantage, it would be uncomfortable for a male to compete alongside females, among other reasons but ultimately, if the drive and effort is present, there are legal rights and no legitimate reason for woman to not be given the opportunity to prove themselves and normalize the incorporation of females to male sports.
Women can be just as good as men in sports, they just have to work a little bit harder because of the obstacles presented to them. Also, women’s inclusion in male dominated sports like major league baseball have nothing to do with their performance but with sexism. In 1931, a 17 year old girl by the name of Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in the same day. A few days later her contract was voided with the excuse that women were too delicate to play. If little boys and girls played in coed sports from the beginning other than a few choice teams in elementary school there would be
Why girls and boys shouldn’t play sports together Boy and girls shouldn’t play the same sports together for several reasons. First, females might get more injuries than boys because some of them are more fragile. Next girls have some of their own sports like boys. Finally, people might get mad that girl’s are playing in boy’s sports.
“It’s frustrating, but that’s just the way it is now,” Kate Hall said after losing to an opponent. Hall had just been stripped of her two-year reign as state champion to a transgender female (male-to-female) athlete in a high school track competition. Transgender women should not be allowed to compete with biological females. Every time a trans female makes the team a biological female is stripped of their chance to be on the team and every time a transgender female athlete places in an event another female loses the opportunity to achieve their goal of success. Recently, many transgender athletes have been competing alongside the gender with which they identify themselves, instead of competing with their biological equals. The differences in male and female physiology are the reasons why men and women compete in separate events in sports. If it is unfair for men to compete against women then how is it fair for men who identify as women to take on biological females.
Throughout the years, gender roles between men and women have evolved immensely. The women who were once seen as incapable of competing alongside men, are beginning to transform this stereotype and decrease the gap within genders in sports. In the past, men have had advantages over women within sports such as, more media exposure and a larger following, but female athletes are changing that. In a world led by mostly male figures, women have gained momentum in proving the feminine stereotypes wrong by calling for an even playing field for
Official athletic teams are developed in Junior High School, around the same time that feelings for the opposite gender arise. My point is that if two separate genders, male and female, are placed within the same team, feelings or affection for the opposite gender will become an obstacle for physical and athletic performance. Due to lack of focus, I believe that this will result in numerous losses.
Therefore, they need a higher level of competition. The boys' sports teams have a higher difficult competition, but a girl is unable to join since the ban from a sports team being coed. The boys' sports team provides a chance for the girls to step up their level and keep learning, so I believe girls should play on the boy’s sports team. Having the team coed, girls can gain more strength.
In boy’s football, boys can grab their opponent’s chest to push them back. If girls were to play with boys, boys could not be able to push back girls without being called out for being “unmannered”. Boys are generally also bigger, heavier, and taller than women. When it comes to sports such as football, men naturally have the upper hand. To make the game equal, there would have to be a whole new set of rules on what boys can and cannot do. Even so, many schools still implement co-ed teams, saying that girls should be able to play with boys and that it is false to say that girls cannot compete with boys on an athletic level. They also claim that putting boys and girls on the same team promotes gender-diversity and equality, whilst also
Through the movies viewed in this course this semester, we saw women who were able to play against men and still keep their femininity. Nothing is lost when playing sports not traditionally meant for a particular race or gender. Society must become more understanding when it comes to the sports different types of people play and hinder from stereotyping anyone when they participate and perform well in that sport.
This can be a safety hazard for females in a highly contact sport like football, if society were to allow girls to play on all boy’s teams. Also, Dr. Wallace agrees with this statement, “And in most sports, strength and size make the difference, and these attributes are extremely important to team success. That's why I firmly believe the sexes should be separated in athletics” (www.creators.com).
A sport like golf does not involve physical touches and it is not an aggressive sport. Men and women are both at an equal position in golf, so it is possible that in golf the genders could be mixed. But this is only possible in some sports. In sports like basketball, it is right for women and men to be separated. Men hold a more physical advantage and the sport would not be fair. Basketball player Nancy Lieberman said, “There are no women today who are 6-foot-6, 250 pounds and can plow through a dude."(Mcmanus). To keep sports a safe and impartial event, it needs to be kept separated by gender.
The first reason is playing coed sports would have many advantages, one of them is that it increases the way that they distinguish themselves individually. Boys and girls like to play on the same teams because it gives them freedom to be with the opposite gender. Guys and girls hang out together outside of sports and teams, why not let them play a sport together. Statistics have shown that having coed sports reduces depression in girls and if in coed sports at an early age boys learn to respect girls sooner. This is one on of the few but very important reasons.
Sports become stereotyped as gender-neutral, feminine, or masculine based on conceptions regarding gender, gender differences, and beliefs about the appropriateness of participation due to gender (Colley et al., 1987; Csizma, Wittig, & Schurr, 1988; Koivula, 1995; Matteo, 1986). Sports labeled as feminine seem to be those that allow women participants to act in accordance with the stereotyped expectations of femininity (such as being graceful and nonagressive) and that provide for beauty and aesthetic pleasure (based on largely male standards). A sport is labeled as masculine if it involves the following: 1) attempts to physically overpower the opponent(s) by bodily contact; 2) a direct use of bodily force to a heavy object; 3) a
