When was the last time you picked up fast food for a quick meal? Was it yesterday for lunch, today for dinner? According to nutrition writer Alex Lenhoff “the average American eats fast food 159 times a year. That's [three] times a week” (Lenhoff). Americans are consistently eating “fast” food, without realizing the effects it has on their bodies. Sure, a large order of fries may taste delicious while indulging them, but what about the delicious calories and fat that come along with it? The National Health Service has stated “the average male adult needs approximately 2,500 calories [daily]” (NHS). A normal fast food meal contains roughly fifteen hundred calories. That means in just one quick stop, they have consumed almost half of their limit for the entire day. Therefore, it is no shocker that one in three Americans in the United States are obese. Fast food has become a large contributor to obesity in America. The intake of its unhealthy effects must be lessened, resolved by simply making it more expensive. Americans will not choose to eat out as much, if it significantly burns a hole in their pocket. Placing a higher tax on fast food will not only resolve American obesity but will also put a stop to unhealthy lifestyles. With the higher taxation of fast food, it would raise the prices of items on the menu, so that you could not purchase an entire meal for dirt cheap. Now days fast food is publicized for being remarkably cheaper than buying groceries to cook with.
America is known as the fattest country in the world. Is fast food the culprit? According to the article, "F as in Fat 2005," America's obesity rate in 2005 was a whopping 60%. Many people believe that this is due to the increasing popularity in fast food. It is much easier to go through a drive through and pick up a meal than making the food yourself. When eating out, people are more likely to eat more than when they cook. Meals at fast food and restaurants have become popular, in America the size of each meal is significantly bigger than any other country. According to Christina Sarlch, author of “Guess How Many Calories Are In A Typical Fast Food Meal” the amount of calories in a fast food meal is a gouging 1100 calories with a drink .The average number of calories needed for a person is 2000-2500 calories . Split between 3 meals that averages out to 666.67-833.33 calories a meal. Of course not many people follow that suggested calorie intake.
Junk food is one of the main causes of obesity in America. It contains things that have unhealthy ingredients that could lead to illnesses in the future if a person consumes a large amount of junk food. But there are ways to eat junk food and still be healthy while enjoying your favorite junk foods . Over the years there has been a lot of history behind junk food and the effects of it. Some of these historical findings have started leading people to understand that the amount of junk food that they consume is something that is very important for the health.Usually a person who is young that consumes a large amount of junk food may see an increase in obesity cholesterol and high blood pressure. For a person who is older such as in their 30s and 40s they may then see those things as well plus other illnesses that could lead to things such as high blood pressure and heart disease .To avoid an unhealthy lifestyle in the future something that might be questioned. Is it possible to live a healthy lifestyle while still enjoying junk foods?
Fast food restaurants are convenient if you are on the road and get hungry and you need a quick meal. The service at a fast food restaurant is quicker than making a homemade meal at the house. Fast food can give people more time to do important tasks that they need to do. Fast food restaurants also have a separate play area where kids can run around and play on the slide or swing and just have fun while wait on the meal. Many people buy fast food because it’s cheaper. Some people think that fast foods are convenient because they dislike cooking. Younger people who are single eat more fast foods than older people and married couples just for the convenience of it. For years fast food was considered a poor people’s food. The drive-through was where people would go who could not afford the “good stuff”. The meals have since changed, introducing healthier meals and low calories.
Would you like to have no decisions on the healthiness of your food, and being able to only eat fast food, fried foods, etc. Most people would say no and rightfully so, people should be able to have choices on the foods they want to eat whether it’s healthy, unhealthy, fast food, farm grown, we shouldn’t have only unhealthy foods for our choices of what we eat. In the film Food Inc. directed by Robert Kenner there is a part in the movie that talks about the food choices of consumers. A point that was talked about for a decent amount of time in this part was how healthier foods are more expensive than fast food. This stood out to me because it’s true it cost more to eat healthy than it does to just go through a drive through. This is outrageous it should be the opposite, we should have to spend more for fast food than healthy foods. While at most fast food places there are ways you can eat healthy food but it is still more expensive than just buying a cheeseburger or chicken nuggets. During this part of the film a family was talking and saying that they have to choose whether to eat healthier food or get there father/husbands medicine so he could work. A family has to choose between those to things and that is not fair to anyone that has to make that decision. The family wanted to have better food and to not always be eating fast food meals but they don’t really have a choice and that is heartbreaking to see.
As a nation, Americans revel in the consumption of junk food. These extremely unhealthy foods are often present during many various occasions, such as sports events, movies, and parties. When a person craves a quick snack, junk food is the ideal solution. However, beyond the satisfying taste of foods such as Doritos and potato chips lies a very serious problem. These foods can lead to physical disrepair, sickness, and even death. Yet many Americans remain oblivious to this nationwide issue and allow it to remain unaddressed. The crisis of junk food in America needs to be resolved immediately. To go more in depth, it is imperative that the nation resolves this issue relatively soon, primarily because the excessive consumption of
Most kids around the world are diabetic and overweight and something needs to be done about it. I see a lot of kids at my school and in public that are overweight. Many of those kids have a plate full of food. Most kids eat a lot of junk food which is unhealthy for them. Paragraph 1, 2, and 3 talk about overweight kids and how they can live healthier lives.
The convenience of fast food plays a major role in how often people eat it. When driving down a main road chances are you will see a countless number of fast food restaurants and drive thrus. I know that it saves time and money for people who are coming home from work but people should plan out their meals nights before. One generation ago three quarters of the money that is used to buy food was spent on fresh food to cook at home. Now almost half of that same money is used to purchase fast food (Introduction). Fast food is also cheap which adds to the reasons why people enjoy it. The parents will allow the children to order what they want because chances are it only will cost them a couple of dollars. Childhood obesity rates go up as the prices of fast food goes down (Introduction). In 1970 over six billion dollars were spent on fast food. In 2014 one hundred ninety-five dollars were spent (Kelly). The fast food industry is aware of the power it has over American citizens and it is going to use that power
Michael Pollan (2010) stated in his essay “Food Fight” that, “Cheap food has become and indispensable pillar of the modern economy” (p.513). This is true especially with those that work in the fast food industry because they do not get paid that much. Cheaper food is what they can afford so that is what they buy instead of healthy food. Astyk and Newton (2009) state in their essay “The rich get richer, the poor go hungry” that “Multinational food companies have also worked their way into the food budgets of the poor” (p.517). When consuming fast food, “It turns out there are significant costs-to the environment, to public health, to the public purse…” (Pollan, 2010, p.513). If there were more fast food restaurants that offered healthy food with the same price as fast food there would not be an obesity problem. That would affect the farmers or people selling the crops and food that is healthy. Buying fast food is cheaper, but it will cost you more in the long run with your
Imagine that you are a high school student. Everyday, you eat lunch with your friends at the fast food place near your school. You order your usual double cheeseburger with French fries and go to sit down with your friends. They’re standing by the wall, waiting for another group to get up so you can sit at your usual table by the vending machine. Ten minutes go by before the group finally leaves. When you sit down and look at your cell phone, you realize that you have only three minutes to get to class! You scarf down your double cheeseburger and manage to squeeze in a few French fries before you hastily start for the door. You try to put on your fleece, it’s a rather blustery day, but it won’t zipper up all the way and fits you much more
As a country, we are very accustomed to having everything needed readily available to us. In most cases, we can easily drive a few minutes out of the way and be able to find a selection of various places to shop or eat at. Despite the food being fast and easy to access, we tend to compromise our health in turn. In a recent study conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture, it is believed that 1 in 4 Americans eat fast food for at least one meal of the day. Since this is such a controversial topic, most people differ in opinions. In this paper, I am going to discuss two articles that argued different sides on the controversial topic of taxation upon fast food purchases.
In a single meal from a fast food restaurant, the typical amount of calories is near 1,500, while the average calorie intake for the average person should range from 1,500-1,800 calories a day. A study conducted by the American Journal of Public Health studied how the proximity of fast food restaurants to schools, increased the amount of low quality food that children consume (Davis and Carpenter 505). The AJC found that “more than 9 million US children and adolescents are obese, and just as many are at risk of becoming obese,” (Davis and Carpenter 505). This study, along with others focuses on how fast food has contributed to the growing obesity epidemic in America. A very high percentage of adults in the US are also obese, which may be a result of increased fast food consumption.
Because fast food is cheap, and easy to obtain, in the 1920s, Americans spent ¼ of their average income on food to support their family; and now in current time, Americans only spend 1/10 of their income, or

McDonald 's, In-And-Out, and Carl’s Jr are all good places to go eat. Just thinking about these fast food joints makes your mouth water. Most Americans go to these fast food places every week. It is a weekly visit and addiction, although these foods taste good they are very bad for one 's health. They can cause health problems and in severe cases death. There are advertisements and screenings about fast food or junk food everywhere now. A person cannot go somewhere without being bombarded with food advertisements. Thus it is harder for teenagers to maintain a healthy diet and exercise daily. Everyone wants to live a good long, healthy life, that is why there should be more tax on fast foods.
