You are able to stay in touch with long distance relatives via the web, able to program and view security surveillance over owned property from your smartphone. You are even able to work from home, which will save you a lot of money. No more will you have to live in this knowledge gap, unable to acquire information like the rest. You will become more proficient and more marketable. Do you remember all those long, expensive, frustrating drives you had to take to visit a friend or family member? There are social media sites that will help you stay connected with loved ones. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are among the sites that are available to you. Since the Bulletin Board System there has been hundreds, and counting, of social networks created: most notably Twitter, Facebook, Kik, Snapchat, and Instagram. Today there are just over 3 billion active Internet users (45% of the world’s internet users), 2.1 billion of those people have social media accounts (Jeffbullas.com). People use social media for many numerous reasons. Most use social media to stay close to relatives and maintain social ties. Some of people’s most essential daily needs are accounted for by social media: whether it be interacting with friends or coworkers, following politics, or following the latest fashion trend set by the Kardashian
Social media has been a topic of debate for years. Some people are strongly against any use of it while others like the instant connection it provides. A major concern over social media is the lasting effects it has on teenagers. Social media can affect teenagers through many ways including things like their self-esteem. Cyberbullying is a raging topic of discussion centered around teens social media use. It can also effect their people skills and create a lack of community involvement. Some parents think that watching what their children do on social media is an invasion of privacy but is your concern for their privacy greater than your concern for their safety? Social media poses a great danger to today’s children. It can affect many aspects of their lives.
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past five years, welcome to the world of social networking. According to ComScore, over one billion people use social networking sites across the globe. That means that everyone who’s anyone has a page or account with twitter, myspace, facebook, skype or any of the other hundred emerging sites. People have discovered a better way to communicate with other people all over the world, far surpassing snail mail and e-mail. Why send a letter to your cousin living in France or pay outrageous money for a phone call to your brother stationed in the Middle
Do you really have privacy when you send messages or post a picture on social media or is the government watching your every move? Social media has been around for over a decade and continues to grow. On social media people have the freedom to say what is on their mind, so why would the government need to overview everything said and done on the internet? The government wants control over its people. The first amendment gives us freedom of speech, but on social media the government overlooks every conversation you have. Although your privacy is being striped with the government breathing down your back, I do understand that sometimes it is necessary for them to check what people are doing online.
Technology as a whole has changed the way we live our everyday lives in numerous ways. We now have the opportunity to do many things with a touch of a button, to name a few, starting our cars, tying our shoes, or accessing the world of social media. The single piece of technology that has impacted most of us today is the cellular phone, which leads us to the wonders of the Internet. In today’s society there is a plethora of troubles we face, what comforts most of us and makes our lives a little easier is the world of social media. Social media sites like Facebook, Snapchat, Tinder, Twitter, and countless other websites can help us feel connected with the world and/or our surroundings. To most people social media might
You’re scrolling through your feed, eyes glued to the screen. People's lives flashing before your eyes, stories that you wish you knew were about yourself. Seeing people's lives, wishing you could live like them. You start to type a new update for your followers, but the words don’t come out.
Social media has taken the world by storm. Almost everyone has some type of social media. Your account can say a lot about you because it’s your personal page to express yourself. A controversy has come up for employers. The issue is whether employers should have access to a person’s social media to find out if the person is suitable for the job. It’s important for an employer to have access to a potential worker’s background through social media. It can reveal if the person is reliable, highlights behavior, and help employers evaluate an individual’s intelligence. Employers have the right to use social media as a way of seeing if this person is right for the job.
In the emerging age of technology, it is difficult to ignore the immense advantage that the Internet has to offer. It is thus without a doubt that social media is beneficial to activism due to its ability to spread information faster than ever before, and to a larger audience. A social media campaign is a beneficial resource for attracting activists to a cause because it is a useful mean for mass communication; it propagates global support (Starbird & Palen, 2012), and allows for recruit of marginal group members (Postmes & Brunsting, 2002). Specifically, social media facilitates the communication and connectivity of leaders to the grass root members, emphasizes group unity, and readily motivates the involvement of otherwise apathetic individuals (Gladwell, 2014). Although the legitimacy of this new form of activism has been doubted (Gladwell, 2014; McCafferty, 2011), it is difficult to ignore the overwhelming benefits that social networking has to offer. The valuable impact of the Internet can no longer be overlooked; instead, it should be embraced and implemented to its full potential to ensure the success activism campaigns.
History shows that BuzzFeed has consistently been popular across many of the most commonly-used social media platforms. In November of 2016, BuzzFeed’s Tasty (the popular cooking channel and one of BuzzFeed’s 4 main tabs on their homepage) partnered with RITZ Crackers to help increase store sales during the popular holiday shopping period. The videos featured Tasty’s unique aesthetic for step-by-step recipe videos, shot from above to show what someone would see when cooking. RITZ utilized Facebook’s advertising tools to reach a specific target audience (Facebook Business). According to Facebook Business the campaign achieved:
teenage girl decided it would be acceptable to send a provocative photo of her to a guy that she had a crush on in school. Since Snapchat photos merely last a few seconds, she would send it to him on there. Only he will see it, she thought as she clicked the send button. Minutes later, she received a notification stating that he had taken a screenshot of her photo. The guy convinced the girl that the photo would only be viewed by him. The following day at school, the girl began to be harassed, and it seemed like everyone knew something that she did not. A teacher pulled her aside and advised the girl that she had seen a provocative photo of her on a number of students’ cell phones. That photo she thought would be safe was now set out in the open for everyone to see. Social media will never completely ensure one’s privacy. Once a photo is made public to the internet, it is out there somewhere forever. Snapchat, the social media app, provides a false sense of security and privacy for its users. Temporary photography is utilized via this application to communicate with others. When a photo is sent on Snapchat, the user has the control of the amount of time that the receiver can view the photo, one to ten seconds. Then, the photo disappears on the smart device, but the other person is able to screenshot that photo and do what they wish with it. After a photo is sent out to another person, the sender has no control of what is done with the photo. Snapchat is a hazardous social
I have chosen to write on the topic Media and Work because the press significantly affects our daily activity and is used by a large percentage of people. Social media makes one’s social life more visible to the world. Social media includes sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter and has been growing in popularity over the past years. The popularity has provided more opportunities for data collection by companies. The companies collecting the data require the critical focus on social media surveillance. Social media surveillance is surveillance of information in profiles from different social contexts. It has led to the exploitation of social media users and self-exploitation by the supervision as discussed below.
Social media is used as an outlet to express feelings, thoughts, perspectives, and creative ideas and more to the world. There are numerous reasons as to why I use social media, a few entails connections, personal branding, and updates on entertainment. The main social platformsthat I am most active on are Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Each platform is used in different ways because they each serve different purposes. Instagram is used for personal branding.Twitter is used for connections and updates on entertainment, news, and personal blogging. Snapchat is used for social connections. I use these different social media apps on my spare time between classes, when I’m bored, and before I go to sleep. There are many aspects to socialmedia, but usually they are categorized into either the positive or negative. Social media is an outlet for many teens today, including myself. Generally, I use my social platforms for personal branding, social connections, and entertainment updates. On the Times article “The Secret Language of Girls on Instagram,” written by Rachel Simmons, she states: Girls can project a persona they may not have time, or permission, to show off in the classroom: popular, social, sexy. Cultivating a certain look is so important that it's common for girls to stage 'photo shoots' with each other as photographers to produce shots that stand out visually. (Plus a joint photo shoot is more evidence of friendship.)
