Immigrants: The Process Of Becoming A Citizen

Decent Essays

There are many problems that America is currently facing. One of the big issues that America has to face every year is immigration. Thousands of people are illegally entering the U.S. every year and thousands of people are being arrested and deported for being here illegally every year. In order to bring these numbers down and have people stop coming here illegally is to have a better immigration policy. The process to becoming a citizen is currently difficult and takes a long time. The path to becoming a citizen is a long and lengthy process. To just get a green card takes over a year. Then you have to wait a five-year minimum before you can start the process to being a citizen. After the five-year wait, you have to fill out the paperwork and take a citizenship test. On this test, there are many questions that the U.S. expects everyone to know, like the easy question of who is the first president or the even harder question of who is the current speaker of the house. This seems reasonable, but studies have been done that show that many U.S. citizens who have been born and raised in the U.S. by parents who were born in the U.S. are unable to pass the exam themselves. How can we expect people who weren’t raised in the U.S. to pass a test that many natural born citizens can’t even pass? So not only is it hard to become a citizen, it takes forever. Say you are in a war-torn country like Syria and want to move to the U.S., you might have to wait awhile before you are able to.
