Research Assignment 1
Summary: “Policy Gaming for Strategy and Change”
The following assignment is a summary of the article “Policy Gaming for Strategy and Change” that was written by Geurts, Duke and Vermeulen in 2007. In the article, it can be read how companies can use gaming simulations in order to analyse future scenarios and adapt certain strategies to their complex organisational environment.
The article begins with an introduction about policy gaming, why it is becoming more useful for today 's organisations and the statement that the unstable environment of today is a risk to organisations strategies, and that these risks would require coming up with innovative and creative solutions in order to solve these issues.
It is stated, that there are two functions within a game policy that directly addresses this dilemma, namely on one hand as a customised and interactive approach and on the other as an opportunity to shape the own future, which can be explored and analysed, due to a mixture of role-playing and strategic simulation.
Further on, the article is divided into two parts. In the first part, the authors explain how exactly policy gaming works, so how it is build up and how it is practiced. In the second part, the authors make a step further and defining how powerful simulation gaming is actually by using examples, which show the potential that simulation gaming has in real world cases. In the end, as the last part, they are giving a conclusion and their own
The purpose of this paper is assessing my strategy and decisions in the simulation Biz Café. Then, I will give my results and explain how I got there. However, there were many factors involved creating these results. In this simulation, everything was left up to me to decide how to run my new coffee shop. There were big decisions at the beginning you had to make to create the overall theme of your business. Then, I was to hire employees, buy goods, and act on specials decisions or react to good or bad customer reactions. This, I will explain more in the following paragraphs.
Patient access to affordable health care is an ongoing issue in the United States. The first portion of the policy process involves three different stages, the formulation stage, legislative stage, and the implementation stage. Three main stages exist in the process to transform a topic into a policy (Morone, J. A., Litman, T. J., & Robins, L.S., 2008). Coupled with the implementation stage is an evaluation of all the stages to determine effectiveness and gather information for use in future public health care policy making. In the formulation stage, the ideas, concepts, and information steam from this process of policy making. The

This week’s key learning areas have been eye opening and worthwhile. Our game simulation has taught me how to manage the human resources (HR), capacity planning, receiving, production, and shipping departments. One key element that caught my attention was bottleneck issues. Although reputation and meeting goals is important, I must pay attention to the machines that are causing bottleneck issues; performing a cost/benefit analysis can fulfill this. It is necessary to manage mistakes made in strategy during the game, which can resolve issues down the road to have a successful business plan. There were three questions posed in our case study: What are the highest three unit profits?; What are the lowest percentage mark-up items?; and How would you use this in determining your business plan? These key areas will be discussed throughout the journal to express my understanding of the experience.
The first two lectures, the introduction to policy making and agenda setting, gave a good background to the topic and laid a good foundation on which to discuss more specific issues. The policy triangle and the basic policy making sequence both were easy to understand and gave a good overview of this complex process. The further discussion of agenda setting opened my eyes to the importance of deciding what even makes it to the table to be discussed. It is easy to forget that before topics can even be debated and addressed, someone has
A policy is a set off rules or steps which are introduced to influence decisions in all aspects of life. It can be either in education, business or in any other form of an organisation; in other words it’s a definite course or method of action selected amongst alternatives, and in light of a given condition, to guide and determine present and future decisions.
Being a video-gaming geek, I grew my obsession for economics via a video-game whose mechanisms derived from real world’s intricate economic theories. Not only critical observation of Economics’ mechanisms virtually bolstered my passion but noticing real world’s diverse complexities and contribution from a hawker to a large hypermarket , proved to be nail in the coffin. The importance and relevance of economic
Introduction Intro Strategy- Primary assertion Our society is moving towards a world like that of Brave New World. This is something we should be looking forward to.
“Strategy as Revolution” is also associated with a set of weaknesses that compromise the quality of the article. For instance, the author recommends top executives to gather the viewpoints of lower rank employees in terms of strategy formulation; however, Hamel (1996) fails to highlight the ways these viewpoints can be filtered taking into account the fact that there could be dozens if not hundred ideas and implementing all of them is not practical.
Ethical game simulation presents some ethical issues in an innovative manner that encourages people to think far and wide through the different spheres in the society. In trying to find solutions one must understand that people look at situations differently usually brought about by the different backgrounds that we come from, identify the most natural lenses or perspective to each individual as everybody is entitled to an opinion and follow a given decision making procedure so as to arrive
Meanwhile the core idea of 'Strategy as Revolution' depends on many factors and can not be applied for many companies. For a companies, revolution is on the list of consideration but not on the list of schedule. Fot this article, too much stress on could lead to misunderstanding of the impact of revolution.
The fourth step into the creation of executable strategies relies in the alignment of resources, purposes, and strategical thinking contemplations into reality. The rationale of this step is to create
There are various schools of strategy that have been vigorously debated on and after a consolidated effort; three schools of strategy were produced. They are the planning school, the positional school, and the resource based school of strategy (Ritson, 2013). All these strategies will be described with examples to buttress each.
Chapter 1 walks the reader through the need for easy methods of policy analysis and planning as our problems in society become more complex and difficult to solve. This chapter starts with the introduction of a set off systematic procedures or what is known as policy analysis methods that can be used to solve our complex problems. Then there is a subgroup of these methods that are basic methods, which assists with quick results and in making good policy decisions (Patton, Sawicki, & Clark, 2012, p. 3). Some disagree that there is a set of procedures that can be used to assist in solving problems however a standardized methodology has developed and been applied (Patton et al., 2012 p.
The game of strategy is about being different and staying different. How is this achieved? Formulating a business model need not be as complicated as predicting the future market and the actions of competitors. However, as Magretta mentions, strategic thinking is necessarily an
