At Harvard School of Public Health, Lucian L. Leape discovered, that many patients appreciated several aspects of the post adverse event apology. The discovery also sheds light on the fact that most patients accepted the apology and did not consider suing. Patients have appreciated the apology that was given; which also was made known that," an apology gave the patient a sense of satisfaction and closure, which led to faster settlements and less demand for damages"(Hodge & Saitta, 2012). In addition, when a physician took on that responsibility it also displayed that they took ownership and created a sense of ease between the patient and care provider. When apologies are perceived as having feelings from a physician to a patient the patient

Every one of us has relied on a medical professional at least a few times in our lives. When we get seriously ill, or suffer a serious injury, we put our health in the hands of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, fully expecting to be treated with a certain degree of professionalism and safety. Unfortunately, sometimes the expected care is not given, or not given to the extent which the ailment requires. In these situations, we can feel blindsided, confused, even taken advantage of.
The main argument in The Apology by famous ancient Greek philosopher Plato is whether, notorious speaker and philosopher Socrates is corrupting the youth by preaching ungodly theories and teaching them unlawful ideas that do harm to individuals and society. In his words Socrates quoted the prosecution’s accusation against him: “Socrates is guilty of corrupting the minds of the young, and of believing in supernatural things of his own invention instead of the gods recognized by the state.” 1 Further Socrates consistently introduces tediously compiled number of examples to provide valid and sound arguments to prove that he is innocent of the charges brought up against him to the court.
Sympathy is an extension of empathic concern, or the perception, understanding, and reaction to the distress or need of another human being. Sympathy must be given and received in order for the world to operate because all humans make mistakes that impact other people’s lives. The Reprimand is a short “phone play” written by Jane Anderson in 2000. The two characters, Rhona and Mim, have a confrontation about what Rhona believes to be an inappropriate remark during a meeting. In The Reprimand, Mim deserves the most sympathy from the audience because Rhona intentionally manipulates her into believing she is not respected by her male co-workers.
Blendon, R. DesRoches, C. Brodie, M., Benson, J. Rosen, A., & Schneider, A. (2002). Views of practicing physicians and the public on medical errors. New England Journal of Medicine. 347, 1933-1940.
With the statement, “warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon 's knife or the chemist 's drug” physicians are given the responsibility to step down from their systematic ways of scientific thinking and make decisions on the level of human kind. The modern oath also provides for the necessary address of issues in liability in relation with a physicians judgment. This is predominately done by promoting the uniting of colleagues and defending a physicians right to be unsure in a world of so many unknowns. This acceptance and appreciation is essential for fostering a comradely among physicians that challenges each to think independently, dispute their own peers and still be conducive of making advancements.

President Clinton in 1997 apologized for all the harm the government cause to these black pilots and their families. Some may call the ‘The Tuskegee study’ was America most notorious medical experiment. This study has caused infinite amount of American to lose trust in our government and it medical community. This topic related back to Purtiol definition of the caring response “The ethical goal of every health professional and patient relationship”. (Purtilo, 2011) The author Purtiol made a valid point when he said “patient – centered care is a clinical phrase that is used to help remind you of this priority and that care must be tailored to each individual. Effective communication is not often thought of as an ethical activation, but it is essential for the goal of a caring response to be realized” (Purtilo 2011, pg.
ii. Unconscious physician bias. Another theme in the reading that related back to class was the unconscious biases of doctors influence their interactions with patients, with consequences for patient outcomes. These unconscious biases affect interaction through the doctor’s communication. Establishing a basic understanding of treatment and diagnosis can foster better patient outcomes. An example of unconscious physician bias was Abraham 's focus on former secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Sullivan, in chapter eight. Dr. Sullivan’s campaign focused on the individual choice in adopting healthy lifestyle choices from diet to exercise. Skipping over racial disparities, the unconscious bias inferred through his words was that he considered the patient to blame whenever they fell ill.
I apologize for missing your call! When you applied, you didn’t provide your Social Security Number, which is needed for your financial aid information. In addition, we don’t have a record where you completed the FAFSA.
To Mr. Mcnutt, i do apologize for the incident between us in which i made you feel threatened and unsafe those were not my intentions at all. I'm aware of the decisions and choices that were made leading up to the altercation and i see that i could've handled things much calmer and more controlled than i did. I recognize that my behavior no matter how right i felt at the time was not the way i want to carry on or treat my fellow students here at the University of Memphis. My behavior was out of character and unusual for me i'm a very even-keeled individual, i have i passion for football and it presented itself strongly in that moment but not in the manner i would have liked it to. Once again my actions were not acceptable i seek to have control
The economy was unpredictable for the last eight years due to difficult governmental regulations that have placed tension on the economy. Furthermore, every organization should learn that “technique of voluntary, anonymous, non-punitive critical incident reporting, which has the potential to identify incidents and latent errors One of their main goals is to fast-track their organization to new productivity level while still providing a satisfied package deal for their consumers” (Frey & Argent, 2004, pg.1292). This critical incident technique helps an organization to find a starting point before identifying and resolving its work environment’s problems. Additionally, this technique helps an organization to keep track of incidents to meet them
Good Morning, I wanted to apologize for putting Gertsma instead of Prof. L. I was following the example in My Darton Guide to Writing. It also showed the date in the same format that I used. I was seriously thinking about dropping your class during the first week because I have three other classes and couldn't take a chance on failing, but I'm glad I didn't. When I use to get your emails my stress level would rise to the sky, but now I actually look forward to your feedback. I honestly believe if I had teachers like you when I was in High School, I wouldn't be in college now at 44 trying to start a new career. Thanks Professor. Gertsma
I apologize for not getting back with you sooner, I had a family emergency to contend with. I as not aware that I may have been able to take a class this semester for I have not gotten my transcripts to your office. I do have on hand a copy of my transcripts from the Office of the Registrar from Armstrong Atlantic State University Savannah, Georgia but have not requested my transcript from Central Texas College. I would like to talk with someone to see how prior classes might transfer to your institution, I am retired military but do not have any educational entitlements remaining. I just recently came to the Huntsville area from overseas and the tution costs may prove prohibitive.
Whether it’s a missed deadline, a flawed product, or a billing error, somebody got injured, and even if the offending party is savvy enough to acknowledge the gaffe, there’s far more to an effective apology than just, “Whoops! Sorry.”
