Brandon Joens - CC9808249 P.S. 103 - Assignment #2 ¬¬¬Presidential Job Approval Presidential job approval is a percentage-based reading taken from a poll of a sampled group of Americans. The polling system used to determine this is the Gallup Poll. This poll is widely accepted as accurate since it first predicted the outcome of the 1936 presidential election. Since that time it has been used to collect ratings and get a better understanding of the public’s true opinion of the president’s performance. It has also brought to light what factors, whether outside or inside the president’s control, affect how the people view his job performance. Some of these factors include scandals, how well the economy is doing, support during times of crisis or a general level of acceptance during the first few months of the president’s first term. Historically presidents have been held to a higher moral standard than the rest of the public. This is apparent when a president or some one close to the president is involved in a unethical or scandalous behavior. President Truman is a good example of how a series of smaller incidents convinced the American people that he was not doing his job very well. President Truman experienced a very typical slow downward trend in his approval ratings from 1945 to 1953. A lot of presidents seem to experience the same trend, however in 1952 his ratings made a final drop to 22%. This drop was due in part to IRS allegations involving bribes and corruption. The
While he could have chosen to get more done for the country by sacrificing some of ethics, especially concerning those in poverty, without healthcare coverage, and the ailing middle, he instead stoop up for these people, his beliefs, and the beliefs of the majority of his constituents that placed him in office and has won more for us. This has caused more death threats than any president in history and he can arguably to be said the most hated president of all time amongst conservative republicans. He is a shining example of standing firm to one’s own moral and ethics.
Richard Nixon, though created a large credibility gap within the US, he accomplished a lot for the country. He served five years in the presidential office as a republican (1969-1974), and he was the only president to resign from office in history. Although through his presidency he had accomplished many things, such as creating revenue sharing, ending the draft, and creating anticrime laws, he still had a rough time rebuilding his reputation after many assumptions of corruption in his office. Though he never admittedly pledged guilty to his crimes of taking government funds for his own personal gain, there was proof that he was. After the Watergate scandal, the American people set their mind to believe what the proof led to, so Nixon’s
Some presidents are remembered for their successes and some are remembered for their scandals. William Jefferson Clinton was a president that is known for his biggest affairs with Monica Lewinsky (John Harris). In 1999 Juanita Broaddrick accused 42nd president William Jay Clinton of sexual assault. He was also accused of pardoning his brothers criminal record (Kaizen). Clinton was a president with many success but most of success were overshadowed by his scandalous behaviors.
Just as the original framers of the constitution established limitations on the government within the Bill of Rights, it is to the utmost importance that the president have term limitations imposed as well. Published by the Los Angeles Times, the article ‘Let Us Limit Presidential Tenure’, urges an amendment be passed by Congress to resolve this issue. Finding this specific passage was no easy task as the tedious process required search terms such as ‘Presidential Terms Constitutional’, ‘Executive Terms of the Presidency’, and ‘Presidential Tradition Broken’ were utilized to find the article. Various topics were found in the database such as public opinion regarding Roosevelt's term, the division between Republicans

Throughout history, president's have faced the decreasing approval ratings over their time in the White House. We see that when going into election voters tend to lean more to the individual persuading them things that seem like they are going to make the nation great again. However when elected president, over the years presidents have failed to meet the promises they have made. To win for the presidents is the "power to persuade," but when they lose the confidence of the people, they lose the ability to lead. This causes the next election process, to become very difficult because citizens do not see the right to put in another president who is not going to fulfill their job and promises. However, when the president's approval rating is
Through Nixon's presidency, the decisions he made increased and decreased his approval rating but stayed in a steady range. However as more information relating to the scandal became public his approval ratings really started to plummet from a 67% to a staggering 44%, and later a 31%. After Nixon’s resignation his approval rating stood at a mere 24%. Nixon’s fluctuation of approval was correlated with the decisions he made during his presidency, but after Watergate sent him on a downward spiral of disapproval from Americans. Vice President Gerald Ford took office after Nixon’s resignation. However, Gerald Ford was not always Nixon’s Vice President, Spiro Agnew resigned after being caught accepting bribes and took a felony charge on tax evasion. Gerald Ford was the House Minority leader before he was voted in by the House as Vice President. After the resignation of President Nixon, Gerald Ford took office and became the first U.S. president to not have been elected by the American people. Nixon was facing charges of obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. While it was a controversial move, President Ford gave Richard Nixon a full presidential pardon of his crimes. This was the most controversial decision President Ford made during his presidency. “I, Gerald R. Ford, President of the United
Presidential failure, is just as important as presidential success. This is a determining factor if that candidate should be re-elected if he/she is running for office. A way to evaluate presidential failure can be through ratings in public opinion polls throughout their term. Public opinion polls are vital to guaranteeing democratic governance. They help use see how the public perceive him/her. This concept can be applied vise-versa, where we can also use public opinion polls to measure presidential success.
Everyone’s views of the president are different. A portion of people could hate the president, like him, or would not care about him; it all depends on their views they carry towards the president. Which include the way the president chooses to handle, or throw away ideas of the public. In order for the public to prosper, the president must be able to help. By fully understanding their views and opinions to help them prosper, he will allow for the public to continue growing. However, if the president would continue to do the same things, the growth of America’s society could decrease, which cause cataclysmic effects from the lack of effort towards America from the president.
In conclusion, when judging presidential success, multiple aspects must be considered, and the most important, is to ask if their actions were good for the
President Richard Nixon is most commonly known for his involvement with the Watergate Scandal. President Nixon is a very competitive politition who has been finding who his enemys are and what their weak spots are through all of his career. His purpose for doing this is that he wants to win the election so much and he feels that “the only way he can [win] is if he knows something about his opponent that can give himself some secret weapon” (Sussman 201). President Nixon got himself into many problems during his Presidency and used groups such as “The Plumbers” and the Committee to Re-Elect the President, more commonly known as CREEP. While President Nixon was in office, he seemed to feel that he was “above the law” and that he could
The watergate incident tarnished Nixon's name and character because many Americans put their trust into him. With this being his last speech as the President of the United States he made a plea hoping that the nation would go into a new direction. “ But in turning over direction of the Government to Vice President Ford, I know, a that the leadership of America will be in good hands….responsibility that will fall on his shoulders tomorrow and, therefore, of the understanding, the patience, the cooperation he will need from all Americans”. With the hope that the nation will continue to progress he appoints his Vice President and while doing so he says that he wants Americans to support him. In the beginning of the speech Nixon says he lost his political support system but in which he does not say why or how he lost his support
Because of their positions in the government and their resulting influential abilities, presidents are either praised for advancing the nation, criticized for not doing anything to help the country, or even making the country’s situation worse. Their success as president is dependent on the success of the country. People don’t take into consideration the attempts presidents make, but only those things that help or hurt the country. This leaves room for there to be a good president who may not accomplish much and a bad president who may accomplish a lot.
It is also the American sentiment and tradition to measure how well a new presidential administration is performing. With any administration, setbacks and victories will exist. Trump has been greeted with a number of highs and lows, specifically when faced with the harsh reality, with respect to repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, which he adamantly refers to as “Obamacare.”
Wrongdoing has been a noteworthy issue tended to in each presidential crusade for around three decades. This is on the grounds that the American individuals are tired of the constantly developing issue and appear to be voting in favor of whoever cases to do the most
