Princeton's public schools district's statement is, “Our mission is to prepare all of our students to lead lives of joy and purpose as knowledgeable, creative and compassionate citizens of a global society.”(Princeton Public Schools - Core Mission Statement and Educational Philosophy N.p). They will prepare these students to have successful and happy futures; the students will be creative, knowledgeable and compassionate. This district expects the people that work there, to teach the students to the best of their ability, in a creative, caring and diverse way. They teach and challenge the students in an innovated way, through rigorous learnings, this allows the students to grow academically and achieve a positive future. This statement appeals
The purpose of education is to prepare students for their futures with both knowledge as well as fundamental life skills. I believe students are highly capable beings who have a desire to be productively challenged. To empower students to meet and exceed high expectations set forth by the state, school, or teacher, it is imperative that educators “teach for enduring understanding through partnerships and by drawing on brain-based education, students ' multiple intelligences, and culturally appropriate curriculum innovations” (Laster and Johnson). Beyond guaranteeing students can read, write, and perform basic math functions, we should be producing graduates who are responsible individuals positively contributing to society, reliable workers, and devoted family members. Whether students receive a scholarship to attend college or go to work immediately following graduation, we must train them to conduct themselves with integrity, have an admirable work ethic, and solve challenging problems they may face throughout their lives.
This combined with the achievement related goals and social values become the basis of the schools mission statement.
Rita Pierson, an American educator, once stated, “Every child deserves a champion, an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be” (“Every Kid,” 2013). Her comment is reflected within my philosophy of teaching. One’s philosophy of education defines who they strive to be as an educator; it clearly forms the way one will teach and guides their expectations for their students. Children are the future of our country. Therefore, I believe it is the responsibility of a teacher to strive to be the best educator possible by having cultural competence and pedagogical knowledge to effectively teach their students. This can be done by motivating students to learn through self-discovery based on their interests and what is relevant to their lives. It is a teacher’s responsibility to guide students towards their own goals to grow intellectually and personally as a unique individual. Accordingly, students will be inspired to use acquired skills and knowledge towards the real world.
Robertsdale High School is a public school in Robertsdale, Alabama. RHS was built in 1992 in its current location because the previous school buildings were not equipped to grow with the increasing population. The school is one of seven in its district. The mission of Robertsdale High School is to work with the community to provide a high-quality education that promotes learning. We need to be a school district that prepares all students to be productive members of society. We need to expose our students to the real world and help them see that the world is bigger than our very small community. We need to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed and reach their goals. We need be a school with a pluralistic culture. Our students need to be culturally competent and have a good understanding of diversity. We need to promote the acceptance and celebration of people from all walks of life. We need to develop a supportive atmosphere where students feel they can express their beliefs freely without prejudice or judgment.
Although the many roles of a business professor are difficult to determine, Mercer University’s mission statement provides a surprisingly thorough account of these roles. The mission statement, “to teach, to learn, to create, to discover, to inspire, to empower and to serve,” may not seem like a description of the roles, but one would struggle fruitlessly to think of a great business professor who did not fulfill these roles. The importance of these roles is undeniable, however, among these roles, learning is especially important and is also the most appealing to me. The most significant challenge I have faced was getting a full scholarship into the private school, American Heritage High School in Plantation. As mentioned in my post, our school does not have its’ own vision statement rather there is one vision representative of the district. I certainly agree that it is beneficial for teachers to highlight how the school is striving to achieve its’ vision and it is essential to provide indicators of those goals for each grade or department level. This mission, to me, means that The University of St. Thomas is committed to their students. It shows that the college truly cares about their students and their success. Not only does the staff want all of the students to graduate from St. Thomas but, also become a better person while they are there. To say that "I am extremely passionate about working with children" would be an enormous understatement in regards to my personal experiences, ideologies and self-proclaimed purposes in respects to working in public schools. Being passionate about ones every day line of work is a huge deciding factor for most of us when it comes to “what we want to be when we grow up.” Conversely, it was quite simple for me, you see the rewards of teaching truly lie in the outcomes of one’s teaching. Knowing that from the first day of school, what I do and how I do it will have a domino effect on hundreds of lives throughout my career as an educator. In hopes to not only work in a field that I both admire and aspire to be a part of, I am also driven to one day be that teacher in which my students can look back and say “Miss. Chadwick really motivated me to be a better learner, artist, writer” and hopefully “a better person.”
As an educational leader, I must have a vision and mission statement for the school that is known by the staff, students, and parents. The vision will address the needs of the students academically, emotionally, and socially. According to DuFour (1998), “ Those who seek to transform their school into a professional learning community as characterized by an environment fostering mutual cooperation, emotional support, personal growth, and a synergy of efforts.” The leader must implement a plan that will cultivate the success of all students. The mission will speak to the direction of the school community stating what the desire goals are. The building leader will lead by example. High expectations will be communicated and encourage by staff and students. The educational leader of a school must develop a culture of team work to create a climate that is student friendly. The vision mission and goals of the leader should be transparent. The establishment of common goals is the first step. Without common goals, sustainable progress will be impossible and thus everyone will have lower expectations. The students, parents, and staff should be commented to the goals of every child reaching their full academic potential. The school environment should speak to goal setting and high expectations for all students and staff.
