Private Schools Vs Public Schools

Imbalance is the main contributor in the growing epidemic in education in the United States of America. The education system in the United States is flawed. The center of attention of charter and private schools at its peak, whereas public schools are left to fall apart and leave millions of students uneducated. Everyone, every kid deserves the upmost love and dedication, no matter race, gender, or family financial state. Public schooling is set in place for students and families that can’t ill afford private schools or are denied entry into a charter school. These charter schools and private schools are now prioritized due to the fact that education is more rigorous and prepares students to succeed in college. Colleges are now more tended to choose a private or charter school student over a public school student.

Smaller class sizes are a pivotal reason as to why parents should send their children to private school. Private schools have smaller class sizes, which allow for more individualized instruction on various subject matters, and they improve student-teacher relationships. For instance, “Small classes allow teachers to give students more individual attention and lighten the teacher’s workload, and therefore are generally considered desirable” (Choy 14). Most kids like the school Uniforms, but most kids don’t. I believe kids should have the freedom to be creative and have individuality. The most thing that is bad about having a school uniform is that if you have a ton of casual clothes then what are you supposed to do with the clothes?! Just give it away, sell it?

Thesis Statement: Private school students are more likely to have a better viewpoint in learning, a firm stance in education, and will be more successful in colleges than of public school students.

(A) In Ontario, there are 31 Public English school boards and 29 English Catholic school boards (Ministry of Education, n.d.). There are also 4 French Public school boards and 8 French Catholic school boards (Ministry of Education, n.d.). Public school boards or private schools are the ones who hire elementary school teachers ("Elementary School Teacher.", n.d.). In 2014-2015, there were about 115,156 full-time teachers, about 74,960 elementary schools and 40, 196 secondary teachers (Ministry of Education, n.d.). During the same time, there were about 7,329 principals and vice principals and about 9,198 childhood educators (Ministry of Education, n.d.). Those in senior administrative positions, such as principal or vice-principal, are able to earn a higher salary ("Elementary School Teacher.", n.d.). There are many jobs that involve working with kids other than being a teacher ("Elementary School Teacher.", n.d.). After gaining more working experience, many teachers become principals or guidance counselors. Other possible carriers include, librarian, supply teacher, camp counselor, early childhood educator, professor, social worker as well as child and youth worker ("Elementary School Teacher.", n.d.).

One of the advantages of private schools is the smaller class size. Having less students in a class allows the teacher to focus on each student individually. It also allows the teacher to be closer to the students and learn more about them, therefore forming a bond between the teachers and students which makes learning more effective (Lawrence, 1997).

The topic of what kind of school to send children to has and will be a huge topic in the United States. The debate about Public versus Private has been a debate for a long time, because of varying experiences and statistics. Most parents of young children debate about whether they should send their child to a public or private institution, because they are not sure which one provides a better education. (Strauss, 2013) Two articles have opposing views, but with excellent points on both sides. The first article is pro-private school, and it is called “Why I’m a Public-School-Teacher but a Private-School Parent,” published by Valerie Strauss. The second article is titled “Are Private Schools Better than Public Schools? New Book says ‘No,'” published by Michael Godsey.

One of the biggest reasons public school is more beneficial than private is because it offers many more sports and extracurricular activities. Private schools mainly provide academic activities. In my private school, specifically, there were only four sports, whereas in the public school I go to there are ten. Also, there are many more clubs to join in public school,such as library club, mock trial, and TSA (Technology Science Association). Public school has academic clubs too, but it’s not limited to just academic clubs. The debate on public versus private schools has attracted numerous arguments on their merits and demerits over the years. Although both have their benefits, none is considered better than the other particularly in the US. The government funds public schools, and thus parents do not have to pay for the tuition. On the other hand, in private schools parents fund their activities through tuition payment. As such, parents who have no income constraint usually prefer private schools. Based on a recent report, approximately 10% of the student populations across the US are enrolled in private schools (Ingersoll, Merrill & Stuckey, 2014). Some of the reasons explaining why some parents prefer to take their children to private school include religion, desire for a more student- focused learning environment characterized by small class size among others. It is within this context that the paper will explore the benefits and drawbacks of both public and private schools in the US. The paper is in support of public education, and thus it will strive to make a case in favor of public schools.

•Public Schools - schools are in a district and students attend in the area they are zoned for. Decided by committees. In the past, this was a monopoly, and the only choice other than private schools that parents must pay for.

When students reach their senior year of high school, they have yet another decision to make. Will they choose public or private education? There are other things to consider beyond the public or private aspect. The cost of the university varies from college to college, along with the academic excellence, and the campus life. Some people place one aspect as a priority over others, yet some people look at the overall university outlook. The majority of seniors stress over the perfect choice for their future education, wanting to find the exact university that they have imagined. Most of the time students settle for two of the three options. They either find a university that is cheap with a good education system, cheap with a solid campus life, or a good education system with a solid campus life. There are always students who are dissatisfied with their decision or transfer schools later; that is why finding the perfect college for students is such an important matter. While many of those aspect are large portions of the reason people attend specific universities, the most primitive aspect is whether the university is public or private.

It is often said that private education is superior to public education. I attended a private Christian school from grades Kindergarten through eighth. My father believed a private education would be the best option for me. Our class sizes were very small. Each grade level had around forty students, but we were split equally into two individual classes. The majority of the eighth grade class consisted of the same students that we started Kindergarten with. We had grown up together and helped one another grow. A few months into my eighth grade year, I transferred into a public middle school.

Many parents feel their children are not being challenged enough in public schools. Some of these children are doing well but clearly could do more, could be stretched intellectually. From their parents' point of view, they spend far too much time watching television, wandering around the mall, or playing games on their computers. Many parents are consequently drawn to private schools because of the academic rigor that comes with smaller classes, more personal attention, and teachers who nurture and promote each child's talents. There is no question that private schools offer smaller classes than most public schools in the country. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in 1998-99 the median student-teacher ratio in NAIS schools was 9 to 1 while that in public schools was 17 to 1. Smaller classes make it difficult for a student to hide or slide. In a room with only 14 other students, it is difficult to remain uninvolved or consistently unprepared. In a study aimed at exploring the reason behind the penchant towards private schools, Bukhari and Randall (2009), after reviewing literatures about parents’ choices, stated that parents tend to choose private schools over public schools when they realize that their children’s needs are not met in public schools.

Society was to be based on Egalitarianism (Shuker, 1987), but there is still a difference between private & public schools.
