Nick McGillivray (2015) discussed the pros and cons of social media. The positive aspects of engaging in social media are student users use social networking to discuss educational topics and are using social networking sites to talk about school assignments. Social media allows people to communicate with friends and this increased online communication strengthens those relationships. While grades did improve for light users, the grades of students who are heavy users of social media tend to suffer. Users are vulnerable to crime. While grades have improved for light users, the grades of students who are heavy users of social media tend to suffer. One study shows that student users have an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users have an average of GPA 3.82 According to Suren Ramasubbu …show more content…
They have the freedom to do whatever they want – they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and comment on other people’s lives, and they can even create other online identities the real world does not allow. It has been observed too that the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their time chatting with their acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their materials online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill boredom during study time, diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of this that has gained the attention of many parents is that some students are getting lazier and are no longer interested in going to school. This is probably due to being extensively indulged to get global access and therefore leading them to perform less
Social media is used by everyone. 71% of high schoolers say they utilize more than one of these social networking sites: Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Vine and Tumblr (Lenhart). These sites can benefit people, but can also hurt them. The creators of these sites did not intend for people to abuse them. They were made for everyone 's enjoyment. They can also be very informative and relaxing. Unfortunately, when people continue to misuse social media there can be serious consequences.
One danger that is often overlooked by social networking users is social comparison. The phrase “social comparison” refers to the idea that people determine their own self-worth through evaluating and comparing themselves to others. This is especially prevalent on social networking sites. Users of social networking sites often strive to make their lives seem perfect. In order to achieve this, users will only post their “highlights” or positive points in their lives. One author states, "When you're on a site like Facebook, you get lots of posts about what people are doing. That sets up social comparison — you maybe feel your life is not as full and rich as those people you see on Facebook,” ("Social Media: Does social media have a positive impact on the world?"). However, it is not the fact that the users may unintentionally be posting only their highlights that could be potentially dangerous. Rather, it is the fact that another user may compare their own life to another user’s. For example, a user could be scrolling through a site and see another user’s highlights and begin comparing their own life to the other user’s. As a result, a user could start to develop a lower self-esteem. Their sense of self-worth may also be damaged in the process. This obsession of one’s self-image can have severe consequences such as feelings of depression or loneliness ("Social Media: Does social media have a positive impact on the world?").
(procon.org. 1). Anyway, while we pond on that question, let us discuss why social media discourages students from studying or why students who uses social networking sites don’t do well in school. Besides the fact that students who use social networking sites use them to connect with their family, and long distance friends, proponents of social networking sites may argue that it helps students to do better at school, and that 59% of students with access to the internet report that they use social networking sites to discuss educational topics and 50% use these sites talk about school assignments, according to procon.org (2). However, since these sites are not one hundred percent accurate and reliable, how are we sure that the students who uses social networking sites are actually doing well in their academics and not failing when it is obvious non users of social networking sites perform better. As a matter of fact, what chance does a student who uses social networking sites stand to a student who spends their time outside classroom doing their homework’s, reading their class notes, textbooks, and novels, and spending their time on other things other than on social networking sites? In as much as many of us don’t see the harm social networking sites are having on our students, it is an undeniable fact
Third, social media doesn’t help for their studies or talents. People think social media is good places to show their talents or works what they did. For example, they argue people can share video clip what they playing the instruments or dancing or singing. It is, however, for people who already good to do those. If you are not good at those things and if you spend time to do social media, it would be hard to progress your talents. I did surveys about relationships between using social media and studying last semester. Most students answered using social media is not helpful to study. Also, students who got good grades spend just a little time to use social media. Using social media
Are we becoming less human with the passing of each day? Have we become too dependent on technology, specifically social media? In this day and age, people have different views on social media. They question its true purpose and its effect on society as a whole. With that said, although there are many thoughts concerning the topic/trend of social media something that is undoubtedly true is that social media plays an active role in the lives of the majority of people. Whether in a positive or negative way, social media influences the lives of all people. However this paper focuses on the effect of social media on college students. It addresses both the positive and negative effects of social media on those in college; focusing on a student’s academic efficiency, social interactive skills, and overall productivity.
In discussion of social media being a controversial issue, it is discussed whether it brings positive or negative outcomes on our society. Some argue that it helps stay connected with friends, while others say that social media affects our ability to interact and communicate with people face to face. Additionally, it is argued that social media helps spread news all over the world instantly, cases like missing people or updates on impacting news. However, it increases cyberbullying with the help of common and successful social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.
In today’s world, the spread of fake news on the Internet, specifically Facebook, Google, and Twitter, is a reoccurring issue that people are struggling to put an end to. It is questionable whether social media is deliberately posting false information, which is what a majority of people believe. In contrast, some are under the impression that is it not social media itself, but the people using it who are spreading false stories: more specifically, Jennifer Forestal, Menaka Philips, and S. Shyam Sundar. Forestal, an assistant professor of political science at Stockton University, and Philips, a professor of practice in political science at Tulane University, address this issue in their article from the Washington Post, “People Blame Facebook for Fake News and Partisan Bile. They’re Wrong.” They specifically discuss how invalid news has been an issue ever since technology enhanced communication, but that social media only makes the spread of it quicker and more noticeable. Forestal and Philips’ article focuses primarily on how social media does not help stop fake news, but it is not the cause (Forestal and Philips 1). On the other hand, Sundar, who testifies as a technology major, has much more reasonable arguments in his academic article “Social Media Users Must Start Checking Online News Sources,” stating that fake reports will continue to be an issue until news sources gain back their credibility and media users begin to strictly check their sources (Sundar 1). Although
The word, “Media,” can be defined as, “the main means of mass communication.” Media has been around for hundreds of years, in one form or another. With the new technology available today, media has become more of a social platform than a way to spread information. This has resulted in the emergence of social media, the communication of people by sharing and consuming information, mostly about one’s self. Social media has also sparked a debate as to whether it benefits society, or harms it (Are Social Networking Sites Good for Our Society 1). But, there is no doubt, social media only negatively impacts the world.
Social media has countless adverse impacts, but it is primarily harmful on today’s youth. Specifically, social networking has negative affects one's education. Since the introduction of social media, students have scored lower on test. As a result, students are left with a poor grade point average (GPA). According to “Facebook and Academic Performance,” students who used social media maintained a 3.06 average GPA. In contrast, students who did not use social media had a cumulative GPA of 3.82. The article also presents a study that found that students who use social networking to study score 20 percent lower than those who do not. In addition to inferior grade point averages and lower test grades, undergraduates who use social media inappropriately have lower chances of being admitted to colleges. Teenagers across the nation use social
What happened to the days when talking to someone was either face to face, or on the telephone? Today, children and teens hardly ever speak to people face to face, even when in a public setting with people that they know. This is not only present in teens, but with most age groups. In today's world, instead of talking to someone face to face, social media has come along making face to face communication less common. At the same time, social media makes it possible for people who live in different countries, such as family, able to communicate with one another anytime."Social media is a great way to connect with my friends and family back home in Florida," State U. freshman Rob Dole said.
Our communities have progressed from the way information is learned and processed and also the different ways they use networking. They have learned new ways to communicate with one another. They created a virtual world for ourselves to feel more connected to one another than ever. Social media has open new doors for us with it promoting new opportunities for us. It can be anything from finding a new job or simply finding new and old friends. Even though social media is a good thing to others, it can also be negative to some. Social media is a platform for all types of people, and you will get different kinds of personalities and posts. Social media is what you make it out to be, whether it is right or wrong that is entirely up to them, so it is how and when you use it.
Social media are applications and websites that enable users create, collaborate and share in social networking, for example, Facebook, which allows people to share their own stuff or share other people’s content. Facebook can also be used communication, marketing and networking.
Social media plays a huge role in our lives, It has its own pros and cons. Most of them are for our favors if we use it wisely. It can help us become more productive and efficient at work school and day to day activity. For example, youtube is great place to watch videos that help us to learn from other people work which is associated with our task for work/school, but we must be very careful while using it to the limit. Also social media can help us reach out with every information at our finger tip and we make it a tendency to google and search every small thing which makes us vunerable to using it often, therefore limiting our attention span as we get so dependant on using it that we rely for it most of the time which makes us dull without it, in most cases. So if used wisely, there are lot of things to benefit.
Students who use social media very often tend to have lower grades. Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while nonusers had an average GPA of 3.82. Students who used social networking sites while studying scored 20% lower on tests. College students’ grades dropped 0.12 points for every 93 minutes above the average 106 minutes spent on Face book per day. Two-thirds of teachers believe that social
Students logging into social networking sites everyday, they are doing variety of actions including messaging, games and searching for information. For example, Griffith and Liyanage (2008) claim that, nearly half of Facebook users post or update statues many times during a day. In consequence, these activities might lead to:
